When Cadash wanted to go dragon hunting, she made Cassandra come along, because she had experience and no one else did.

I've never been dragon hunting.

[She wants to go, now.]

Who is Cadash?

Cadash was my Inquisitor. Nadezhda Cadash. She was a dwarf.

She wouldn't take dragon hunting. She said I didn't have the sense to be trusted hunting dragons.

[He keeps talking, distracting her, pulling her into his words rather than the horror the world invoked.]

[She takes another step closer, cocking her head.]

Why didn't you have the sense? What's missing?

[What makes him different from other people? She can sense it, but she can't understand it.]

I don't know. I didn't understand when she said it either. "Cole, you don't have the sense their Maker should've given you, you're not coming hunting dragons, you'll just get yourself stepped on or fried."

[When he quotes her, his voice is lighter, feminine, accented and slightly rough around the edges.]

[She cracks a smile, soft and curious.]

You seem sensible enough to me.

[Yes, tracking down a dangerous vampire in a hungry forest is highly sensible indeed.]

Do I? I can't judge these things. I don't really understand them.

I do.

[She makes a living out of understanding them. Has to understand them, sometimes, or she thinks she'll die.]

Admittedly, we've only just met and I'm half out of my mind at the moment. But you do.

Can you make a good decision if you're half out of your mind?

[He drifts slightly closer, almost steaming or wisping at the edges where the shadows cling to him.]

[She notices, but thinks she must be imagining it. She's imagined almost everything else that's happened this evening.]

Only by accident, I think.

Then maybe I'm not very sensible.

Could we go back to the mesa? I don't want to have to hurt anything else down here to protect us.

[In the dark, she cringes - would flush if she could, bloodless as she is.]

Of course. I'll - follow you.

[She doesn't know where she is anymore, too turned around to be able to find her way back.]

[He offers out a thin, pale hand to her.]

I can stop them noticing us. And we won't be separated.

[After only a moment's hesitation, she reaches out and takes it. Her own hand is cool to the touch, cooler than a human being's would be.]

As long as it doesn't put you in danger.

[As long as she doesn't hurt anybody else, she'll be all right.]

[His is cool too, slightly warmer than hers, but still below what it should be.]

Staying here is more dangerous.

[He concentrates, walks slowly while holding her hand because it takes effort to keep them clouded from everything out there.]

[She is willing to walk as slowly as he needs to in order to stay safe. In the dark of the forest, she is able to pick out most of the roots they almost trip over and guide them away from them in time.]

[For a while she is silent. Then she finds the words she was looking for.]

Is she safe? Cassandra.

She would be safer if she wasn't down here. She didn't want to leave you.

[He speaks the same, thought he remains focused on keeping them hidden.]

[Guilt hits her, and she moves a little closer to Cole at that.]

I understand.

[As close to an apology as she's going to get.]

[He doesn't need, want or expect an apology. What he says is simple statement of fact.

He leads them back towards the mesa, pausing to let things pass them, making them pass their senses on by before moving again, until they can see the tops of the trees again.]

You will be safe to continue on up without me, if you want.

Yes. I will.

[She takes a few steps away, looking back at him hesitantly.]
