but seriously, what's the deal with space food?
Who: Emblica
Broadcast: Network, voice-only.
Action: Fellow members of the SSDysfunction Pathstone
When: In the middle of the night. Space night. Insomniacs, ARISE.
[ It's kind of weird that even in space, people still have a sort of schedule. Sleep during the same few hours, wake up and then stay awake for a while, then go back to bed. Even the fact that all around them, it's dark, doesn't seem to take away from that. In a way, it's almost impressive.
Of course, there are always people who don't...quite adhere to that "normal" sleep schedule. Maybe you can't sleep. Maybe you were taking a shower before bed and then you ran out of hot water and the cold water woke you back up. Maybe your bunkmate snores way too loud.
If you are one particular member of the Pathstone (hint: the one who basically only leaves the sickbay about four times a day), then it's a combination of weird unpleasant dreams and the knowledge that there's a good chance of most of the others on board being asleep right now.
Also, hunger. It's not like she's particularly craving weird solid protein stuff, but when you have to eat, you have to eat.
And so she's sitting in the little dining room, trying to find something among the options here. It is not easy. So, to the network (the ones who aren't sleeping): ]
Has anyone thought of a good way to eat the food here? I keep trying, but it still feels wrong when I eat it.
The flavors don't make sense to me, either. I only know what a few of them are. Are they strange for everyone else?
[ If anyone from the Pathstone is around, she'll be hanging around, poking at some chicken solid and some mixed vegetable solid. And actually not hiding her face. It's...kind of hard to eat with it on. ]

Not yet...it doesn't taste very good no matter what I try.
voice
Even the recipes that are here aren't very good.
What would you want to have?
[ Let's talk about all the food we miss. ]
voice
Not at all...!
[But yes, definitely distracted by that!]
Hmm...Dango, curry, stew, pie, sandwiches, kabab, sushi, pasta, cake, maybe some potatoes...! [Honestly, it sounds like he could go on an on.] All sorts of things! What about you?
voice
[ The ones she knows, anyway. ]
I had a friend who liked to travel all over the world and try all of the foods that she could...sometimes she'd bring some back for me. Even when I didn't like them, it was better than this.
voice
Ah- that sounds wonderful! Where did she go? What kind of foods did you get to try?
voice
[ She actually...sounds kind of happy, which has been very rare up to now. ]
She liked to bring me desserts, most of all. That and different breads, they kept well. She wouldn't eat any of them herself, she said she'd already tried them all, and just brought back the ones she thought I'd like best.
voice
[He smiles, glad to her sound happy. It must be an important friend]
I wonder there's a way we can send things back to her. Ah, I mean, if we find better food.
voice
voice
If not...then maybe we can just write down the recipes so we can make them later!
voice
I'd like that.
voice
I'm Allen, by the way! What's your name?
voice
Do you have someone you'd like to send things to, as well?
voice
Hmmm. [He considers this] Well, my friends Crowley and Ino are already here, but...
[he thinks. A lot of his paradisa friends are blurring on him, or they already left the castle. Maybe people back home...? But why would the Exorcists need food sent to them if they already have the best cook in the- Wait!]
Ah! I know! I could send food and recipes to Jerry! He's the best cook in the world- he'd love to get dishes from other worlds!
voice
[ One of them is on her ship! Which means that she doesn't see much of him since she....avoids.........everyone.............. ]
I'm sure he'd appreciate it. Although it may be a bit surprising, to receive something from so far away.
voice
[Yeah honestly girl if it's crowley you share the ship with- he wouldn't blame you]
Ha- it might a little! But...maybe I can just write a note to explain. [Though..how do you explain "I've been off planet for 7 years and this recipe made me think of you?" Eh. He'll figure it out]
voice
[ And...yes. Yes, it is. ]
Do you think he would believe it? I don't know that I would...
voice
[He knows he did. And after Ino and Crowley's accounts of him leaving- he wasn't going to take it for granted]
Hm...I think so! Strange things happen in the Black Order all the time.
voice
In fact, everyone seems to think this is luck. Good luck, bad luck, their luck. Why is that, I wonder.
[ Oh right, he mentioned something. ]
...what is the Black Order?
voice
[Since honestly, people do it all the time from what he's used to. And oh that question, that's...hard to think of a way to explain it simply]
Oh! It's...an organization for Exorcists back on my Earth.
voice
[ Casually, like it's not really a big deal or anything. ]
Exorcists...? We don't have any of those.
voice
[Though Allen honestly after his experiences with the Order- prefers to keep God out of things like this]
That's a good thing. My world is in the middle of a war. There's someone trying wipe out humanity. Exorcists are who fight against him.
voice
[ Fair enough; she's not a huge fan, herself. ]
That does sound challenging.
voice
[He'd nod, but you can't see that]
Yes. It's not an easy job in the slightest.
voice
You sound a bit young to be a soldier. Do you hear that often?
voice
Yes.
But I swear, I'm older than I sound!
