but seriously, what's the deal with space food?
Who: Emblica
Broadcast: Network, voice-only.
Action: Fellow members of the SSDysfunction Pathstone
When: In the middle of the night. Space night. Insomniacs, ARISE.
[ It's kind of weird that even in space, people still have a sort of schedule. Sleep during the same few hours, wake up and then stay awake for a while, then go back to bed. Even the fact that all around them, it's dark, doesn't seem to take away from that. In a way, it's almost impressive.
Of course, there are always people who don't...quite adhere to that "normal" sleep schedule. Maybe you can't sleep. Maybe you were taking a shower before bed and then you ran out of hot water and the cold water woke you back up. Maybe your bunkmate snores way too loud.
If you are one particular member of the Pathstone (hint: the one who basically only leaves the sickbay about four times a day), then it's a combination of weird unpleasant dreams and the knowledge that there's a good chance of most of the others on board being asleep right now.
Also, hunger. It's not like she's particularly craving weird solid protein stuff, but when you have to eat, you have to eat.
And so she's sitting in the little dining room, trying to find something among the options here. It is not easy. So, to the network (the ones who aren't sleeping): ]
Has anyone thought of a good way to eat the food here? I keep trying, but it still feels wrong when I eat it.
The flavors don't make sense to me, either. I only know what a few of them are. Are they strange for everyone else?
[ If anyone from the Pathstone is around, she'll be hanging around, poking at some chicken solid and some mixed vegetable solid. And actually not hiding her face. It's...kind of hard to eat with it on. ]

action!
and all of that awake-time has given him some room to start calming down. he's not quite so much out for proverbial blood, now.
he even almost sounds something like civil when he overhears her talking to the network, and answers from the doorway]
It's not strange--it's disgusting.
action!
It's a bit late to cover her face again, and even if it weren't, she'd left that back in the sickbay. ]
...n-no, it isn't pleasant.
[ Sssssoooooo tense right now, basically preparing for the worst. ]
no subject
Oh. Forgive me if I've startled you.
no subject
I didn't...expect anyone to be awake here.
[ It's weird because she's not so much scared that he'll retaliate as much as she is about something similar happening again.
The invasion of personal space is no more welcome than it was a few days ago, after all. ]
no subject
Ah, my apologies. My sleeping schedule is a little unconventional.
...Are you normally a night-owl?
no subject
[ Sh...she appreciates it. For now. Though she still isn't looking directly at him. ]
I just couldn't sleep.
[ Partly because she didn't want to since she figured certain people would be asleep, partly because...she just doesn't sleep that well anyway. ┐( ̄ヮ ̄)┌ ]

[and, finally, he nods toward the... foodstuffs.]
I'm also hungry. Have you figured out anything useful about that garbage yet?

Not yet...it doesn't taste very good no matter what I try.
voice
Even the recipes that are here aren't very good.
What would you want to have?
[ Let's talk about all the food we miss. ]
voice
Not at all...!
[But yes, definitely distracted by that!]
Hmm...Dango, curry, stew, pie, sandwiches, kabab, sushi, pasta, cake, maybe some potatoes...! [Honestly, it sounds like he could go on an on.] All sorts of things! What about you?
voice
[ The ones she knows, anyway. ]
I had a friend who liked to travel all over the world and try all of the foods that she could...sometimes she'd bring some back for me. Even when I didn't like them, it was better than this.
voice
Ah- that sounds wonderful! Where did she go? What kind of foods did you get to try?
voice
[ She actually...sounds kind of happy, which has been very rare up to now. ]
She liked to bring me desserts, most of all. That and different breads, they kept well. She wouldn't eat any of them herself, she said she'd already tried them all, and just brought back the ones she thought I'd like best.

Action it up!
It's the least palatable mush I've ever had the misfortune of putting into my mouth. And trust me, I've eaten some pretty dreadful things. I once even tried a Big Mac.
lights, camera, action!
Unlike when they met, she is not actually wearing her skull, so she looks like...well, a pretty normal young girl. ]
I don't know of that, but...it doesn't sound much better than this.
no subject
It isn't trust me. [He squeezes a tube of it into a bowl, which he place on his palm. His palm heats up, as the contents inside begin to steam.]
I find them marginally more palatable if you heat them first.
no subject
...that wasn't...magic, was it?
no subject
Not...precisely. More occult than anything else, I suppose. Demon, and all that.
