Anders | Open
[He liked his crew well enough, what he didn't like was being stuck. Stuck was all he was on the fleet, he needed the fresh air he'd skipped out on with the last planet (The poison moon was hardly somewhere he wanted to breathe). So, as soon as they were planetside, so was Anders and he wasn't disappointed.
It was far more rustic than he was used to, but that didn't mean it lacked charm or exactly the kind of peace he was looking for. No, he was definitely intent on staying here as long as he possibly could. Which meant one run-back to the ship to gather some things (he was still working on that project for Lauralae) before setting out to find something more permanent.
It wasn't hard for him to find work here and there. His knowledge from the Circle came in handy, not just healing, but other, more mundane spells, became useful, as did his ability to make potions and simple remedies. One good thing about rural areas: they liked their at-home fixes. A little tonic to help with a cold and suddenly he was selling out faster than he was finding the supplies to make them, but he could find the supplies and that in itself meant he was more active than he'd been in the last month. It felt good to be doing something again.
Not something he would have expected.
He took up residence in a little treehouse, doing favors for the people he rented from and just about anyone else who wished to barter over pay. What 'money' he did earn went towards simple things like clothing, a staff he was saving up for, and the delicious pastries he'd come to enjoy far too much.
It was one of these pastries he held out as an offering to any familiar face he came across while out.]
Have you tried one of these? I'm afraid I'm addicted.
2) Collecting plants
Part of what was earning him money and barter was his potions and what he needed most was plants. He'd gotten the idea when he'd noticed something that looked suspiciously like elfroot off the beaten path. Further inspection proved it was elfroot and the hunt for any and all useful plants started.
But it wasn't just for the towns he was collecting these plants, he intended to dry and preserve as many as he could to use on the fleet itself. Better yet, if he could find some seeds, he could get some gardening supplies in town and start his own herb garden on the ship. That was his goal and it had him out in the thick forests far more often than he might have liked normally, but he was determined.
So determined, he might not notice the crunch of another person's shoes until they were much closer.]
3) Slug shopping
[The slugs in this place were adorable. He was sorely tempted to get one for himself. Instead, he'd had another idea. Someone...unexpected had come to mind when looking at the favored pets and reminded him of their first conversation while Anders had been stuck on the Marsiva.
It was certainly not an opportunity he intended to pass up. He went to the person selling the pets.]
Um, excuse me a moment, do you happen to have a recommendation of a slug for someone fairly unpleasant and consistently broody? Perhaps something in bright pink or rainbows to match his delightful disposition. I'll take a miracle-worker instead, if you happen to have a slug that can improve a person's face.
4) The Giving Tree; Closed to Kirk
[One thing being consistently planetside had done was let Anders listen in on local legends and one of the most interesting was this large tree that supposedly gave gifts. He wouldn't' deny it, he wanted to know for himself. The trick of the matter meant holding hands with someone and that part was less thrilling, but it ruled some people out immediately for his invitation.
He decided on Jim for a number of reasons and sent the man a message 'you owe me an adventure, Captain. How about a magical gift tree?' and sent coordinates on where to meet him.
Now he just needed to wait.]
no subject
Kirk arrived at said coordinates, dressed for a trek through the forests. ]
You're popping my cherry here, Anders - this is my first magic quest.
no subject
I promise to go slow, Captain. It'll be fun!
[He gestured in the direction they'd be heading and started off. No time like the present.]
Off we go, then, the magic tree won't explore itself. Although, depending on how magical, perhaps it could.
We have talking and walking trees back home, you know. Sylvans.
no subject
Ah, how sweet of you to be so gently.
[ He grinned and clapped his shoulder, falling in step with him easily as they headed into the forests. ]
Really? Huh. I've never met a sentient plant-form before. What are they like?
no subject
They rhyme. They talk like they're reading from Ye Olde Ancient and Bad Poetry except they're serious.
They have no sense of humor. The ones that try to kill you least of all.
[Although, he supposed, if he was perpetually burning under his skin, he'd be fairly cranky as well.]
okay, damn it, what is with my spelling? I swear it's been terrible lately
Rhyme? Like in a bad fairly tail?
[ He raises his brows in disbelief at Anders, because really? Trees that rhyme? ]
Come on, what's one line they've actually said to you?
It's not a problem! I can't spell on a good day
Let's see...I believe it was "I wish thee well, my mortal friend. Thou brought my sadness to an end! May the sunlight find you, thy days be long, thy winters kind, and thy....roots? be..strong?" I think that was it.
[Nevermind he remembered that from Riona's stories, that didn't matter.]
Not all of them talk, just some of the ones that've been around longer. They're actually trees that have been possessed by spirits or demons.
RP Problems
Possessed? Why would something want to possess a tree?
[ Not that he believed in that sort of thing, but they were on a magic quest to a magic tree, so arguing that seemed ill advised at the moment. ]
no subject
I suppose you don't have spirits or demons where you come from? Or, at least, not as prevalent as we do in Thedas.
In Thedas, some spirits and nearly all demons want to be part of the physical world. They're angry they can't be there as humans can be, so they try to find some way to inhabit the physical world. That means a physical form. The 'lucky' ones possess people or animals. The desperate possess trees or other inanimate things. Some fair better than others.

(Or they would, but they would ask her not to leave them again, as if she had a choice. Her heart ached with the idea).
As she wanders around the forest she loses herself in it for a moment, her eyes scanning the ground rather than focus or pay attention to what's in front of her. It's that which leaves her practically tripping over someone before she gathers herself, face a little pink. ]
Oh - I'm sorry! I wasn't paying attention at all, are you okay?
no subject
Oh, don't worry, it wouldn't be the first time I've been tripped over! I'm fine, the better question is, are you okay? It's dangerous to trip in a forest, you could end up stumbling into something nasty!
[Like Rashvine. Thankfully he hadn't found any of that yet.]
no subject
I'm fine, really, thank you. I was just distracted - I was trying to find some herbs.
[ Which, she thinks, might make her look like a complete loon. ]
no subject
I've found plenty, just have to know what to look for and what to avoid. Plus, I had some inside help from the man who owns the place I'm staying in, he used to know someone who made potions from the local herbs.
[He smiled.]
Care to join me?
no subject
[ Hermione steps forward, glancing down at the herbs before she softens. None of them look directly familiar, but she's sure she can see a handful that mirror some of the more common plants in her own world, and it fills her with a little bit of optimism. ]
I've been searching for some that matched things I had in my own world. I did the same thing back on the moon but the only thing I managed to scrape up there was some rather nasty looking Wolfsbane substitute that I don't even need anymore.
[ Since Remus was gone and all. She brightens, though nodding her head. ]
I'd love to. Can you tell me about what you've found?
no subject
Of course! I started this search because I thought I recognized elfroot, a common plant for poultices back home. [He points it out where a patch happens to be growing nearby.] I'd recommend taking some if you're looking for something with healing properties.
Let's see, as for the rest... [He pulled out and laid down the various herbs and roots he'd found, some of which he'd been told how to find and some he recognized on his own, whether as the exact thing or something similar.
He relayed what each was good for to her and what he suspected the others would be good for.]
Obviously, some trials will need to be done for the more questionable ones, but I think this is a solid start. I've been collecting the seeds as well, just in case.
no subject
I've heard about elfroot! Nasrin told me about it when we were having tea together in the other world - it's a little bit like some of the plants I know from home. Healing properties would be very useful. [ Because she can make gentle healing potions for her crew, but it's not as if she can make it from thin air. It makes her curious to look for her own handful, especially if she can grow her own.
Luckily for the both of them, Hermione is a quick study - she always has been - and she's taking note of all the things she thinks might end up being incredibly useful once she's back in the lab and doing her own makeshift potioneering. Turning her head to look at Anders, she smiles, obviously far happier now than she was before. ]
We should see if we can turn a part of the Iskaulit into a greenhouse of some kind, especially when we go for weeks without finding a planet that has any kind of useful herbs. Having a steady supply would be incredible.
no subject
Sounds like an excellent idea. And it'll assuage the ever-present boredom to have plants to tend to. I planned on having a few in the clinic onboard the Three Twins, but it would be a good idea to have some in a more central location.
With enough on board, we could make all the potions we need and then some.

Guess who!
Adalwolfe has a part time job at practically every shop in town at this point, working himself overtime to further his plans. This by far is his most laid back endeavor, made all the more pleasant by the merchandise. And now by the face that he's pleased to see again.]
Anders! Glad to see you. By your description, I'm going to guess the fluffy thing is for Fenris, am I right?
no subject
Well, as a matter of fact, yes! I was hoping for something obnoxious so that every time he sees it he can think of my shining face.
no subject
[Hawke shrugs and stifles a yawn as he takes his slug friend from his shoulder to his hand and pets it mildly.]
I'm going to get him one too, though. I came in here for that but the shop keeper needed help, so.
[Another shrug.]
Here I am.
no subject
Just because they need help doesn't mean you have to say yes. You seem to have a selflessness problem, Hawke.
[It's charming and even a little endearing, but also annoying as fuck.]
As for Fenris, he started it when I first got here, I didn't even know him and he got snotty. I'm simply continuing the trend. Besides, can you imagine his face when he's presented with a slug? Hilarious.
no subject
[He's not scolding so much as being matter of fact.]
Nowhere here takes credits, so how else am I going to laden my ship's larder with better food than the gels we get but to work for it?
[And also get presents for everyone in his currently very small social circle. Which he finds self serving since he's trying to win over these people, but he thinks Anders might not see it that way.]
But I do think it's nice you're getting him something. Maybe the two of you can actually get along this time.
no subject
Oh, I doubt that. He hates me, I'm indifferent to him and I can be fairly obnoxious to those without patience, so it's really just doomed from the start.
[His eyes scan the slugs until one with bands of color mapping it's body stands out proudly among the others. Anders points to it.]
That one should do.
no subject
[Even the slug on Adalwolfe's shoulder barely takes the edge of the pang he feels mentioning that. He plucks one of the little nest-like containers from a bin near the front counter and moves to collect the slug Anders pointed out.]
He used to be a slave in Tevinter, so I'm sure you can understand him having a certain reticence around people, especially mages.
no subject
We had that conversation already. Only a bit before we got to this planet.
[That was why he was getting the slug. They made people happier. Fenris should have some help feeling happier. He might have essentially walked out of their last conversation, but that didn't mean he wished ill-will on the moody elf.
Which reminded him, he needed to talk to Hawke about...that. Just not with all of these slugs around. He dug out the acorn money needed for the slug and placed it on the counter.]
Thank you, Hawke.
