I just want to say that I really appreciate everyone's who's answered my questions about this place, but now that I've had a little time to get settled, [and stop silently panicking] I'm curious about what home is like for everyone.

And since you've been here, have you seen anything like home?

[And since she doesn't really expect to be able to ask and not give an answer herself,]

My world's nothing all that special probably in comparison to some of yours. It's 2012, Earth, with modern-day technology that's nowhere near as advanced as all of this. I live in Mystic Falls, Virginia in a country called the United States.

We do have magic, but I can't do any of it. I only know about it because my best friend was a witch. [And it's invaded every part of her life for the past couple of years, but ssshhh.] Magic where I come from has a balance, it's rooted in nature and spirits of ancestors. So the further down the line of witches you are, the more power you can have. But you have to maintain the balance of nature or the spirits of your ancestors will cut you off.

There are other kinds of magic, but they're bad news and not something you want to mess with. It has some really bad consequences for the user since it ignores maintaining the balance.

[And she leaves it there. She's not willing to out herself as a vampire or acknowledge the existence of other supernatural beings beyond witches and spirits.]

Things get very messy and very complicated quick, so people get hurt no matter how careful you're trying to be.

[Her smile is reflexive. An old habit of pretending that everything was fine and she didn't feel the heavy weight of every loss, every hurt bearing down on her, making it impossible to breathe. She doesn't feel quite that low right now--thankfully, she hasn't in a while--so she's able to feel more of that smile, but it's still a familiar one for her in being so well-practiced.]

It makes you appreciate what you do have and what's left at least. Not the way I'd really prefer to get that appreciation, but my friends and I are each other's family. I don't know what I'd do without them.

[She looks down a little (still smiling) before correcting herself softly,]

I don't know what I'm going to do without them.

Hey-- it's gonna be alright, okay? There's a lotta people here who're gonna be god to you. There's all sorts of people, magic and non-magic, right? You're gonna get to see your friends again and tell 'em all about this crazy-ass adventure.

[That's the way she'd want to see them again, anyway. She'd rather go back to them than the other way around.]

[As for the prospect of new people, well... That's a little...complicated. She's going to keep trying to pass herself off as human for as long as possible, but she's definitely afraid of what will happen if she's ever outed. It's not like she can escape easily or anything like that. She just has to hope she's built up enough kindness from other people that maybe it won't matter as much to them that she lied about what she is.]
