[Gun pointed at them, Beverly steps towards the two stunned creatures and reaches for the tricorder in her pocket. Before she can grab it, however, they awake, pinchers flailing. Fortunately, they are still clumsy and sluggish in their movements, so neither gets a chance to attack her before she shoots. She sighs and calls to Allen.]

Are we clear?

[He comes back after she shoots the last two, eyeing them as if he half expects them to jump up again. Even though they are pretty dead.]

For now, I'm sure there's more.

[Which is why he still has his claws out at the moment. He grimaces and nudges one of the carcasses with his foot.]

I don't suppose you know what these things are?

[Looking down at the body, she shakes her head.] No, though... [She frowns.] They do look a little like Tholians... But not exactly. Not enough to make any assumptions about them, in any case.

Tholians?

[Though if it's not exactly though, it's probably not them like she said...]

Can your tricorder scan anything about them?

They're a non-humanoid species from my universe. They just look similar in appearance is all.

[She takes out the tricorder and runs a scan over one of the dead creatures, frowning at what she's seeing.]

Hmm... this is very... odd.

What is it?

Their neural system... I've never seen a configuration quite like this, even in insects, which is what they most resemble otherwise. It takes up most of their internal structure and is quite complicated.

[She looks up from the tricorder, looking very concerned and alarmed.]

I don't know that they're just animals, some sort of infestation. They could very well be sentient.

[Which... that's not good. That's not good at all. The guilt is definitely coming back.]

[He is also looking concerned about that.]

That's...very bad.

Is there any way we can find out for sure?

I don't know if anyone has tried to communicate with them yet or...

[Her shoulders sag. She should have done that. But they just came upon Allen and her so quickly.]

I can take one back to the lab, perform an autopsy. Perhaps that will tell us more.

[He gives a little nod. It really would be better to know more before they did much more.]

That...would probably be best. I can help you get them to the ship.

[She kneels down by the closest body, which is more or less intact, and reaches out a tentative hand to flip the insectoid over to what she hopes is a more dignified position.]

If they're the ones who sent out the distress signal...

[He watches, not actually helping her do that since really - like he knows what a dignified position is for an insect.]

...If they were, then why would they not respond to hails and attack us...?

I don't know... but something feels very wrong here. It wouldn't be the first time I've run into a crew acting strangely.

[Or, you know, been part of a crew that's acting strangely.]

The trouble is, we don't know what normal is for them, so it's difficult to tell if this is their usual behavior or not. I could be wrong- they could also be the reason for the distress signal. I just don't want to jump to any conclusions yet...
