A cry for help

[a distress call has been tracked across the void, finally leading back to the source. a hulking crippled ship, teeming with hostile alien life, now lies before you.

what do you do? do you dive in or hang back? are you here to learn, play, build, or observe?

however you choose to proceed, your audience is out there somewhere, watching.]

ooc: here is a good ol' themed mingle to get you all started! and don't feel limited by the prompts and what they describe--they're just there as idea-starters, so feel free to go anywhere and do anything.

have fun!

[ She glances at the tricorder, before slowly looking up at the corner. Nothing is peeking out, but she doesn't really want to round the corner until those things are at least MOSTLY out of the way.

She reaches into the pack on her leg, retrieving two knives and two exploding tags, tying a tag to each knife. She'll lean against the opposite wall, just barely out of sight, so she can toss the both of them in a curve around the corner. There's a brief pause before the floor shakes and there's the sound of both tags going off -- and then Ino will move protectively in front of Beverly in case any survived and are smart enough to come around the corner looking for them ]

[Beverly crouches behind Ino (which admittedly, only works so well considering their respective heights) while she throws her... grenades? Or whatever they are. Beverly will have to ask about that later. For now, she simply checks the tricorder for any more signs of life from around the corner. There's only one faint signal and it's fading quickly.

She comes out from behind Ino and slowly creeps around the corner, wary of anything that might have escaped the tricorder's notice. All she sees, however, is one severely wounded insectoid, twitching on its back. This is the first opportunity she's had to approach one of them alive and she's not going to pass it up. To scan it, she squats nearby, though not so near as to be in reach of its mandibles.]

[ She comes over to where Beverly's squatting, peering at how she's scanning it.

It moves a little, like it's trying desperately to get up and lunge at Beverly, so Ino will absently step down on its claw to keep it from going anywhere as she watches in awe ]

Man, those things are really handy.

Mmm...

[Sorry, she doesn't mean to be rude, Ino, but she's distracted by what she's seeing on the tricorder. That sinking feeling she's had in her stomach ever since she and Allen first boarded the ship has only grown. The insectoid twitches its last, then fades away. Beverly stands, her jaw tightening as she says in a clipped tone:]

Let's keep moving.
ino: (That doesn't sound good.)

[ ... Well, that's concerning. ]

What is it?

[ She's quick to start moving again, but that doesn't sound good, and she wants an explanation ]

[She stares straight ahead, not looking at Ino as she speaks.]

The insects. I'm fairly certain they aren't an infestation: they're the crew.

[And they've been killing them. She's been killing them.]

ino: (Vaguely surprised.)

[ ... She falls silent for a moment. ]

What makes you say that, exactly?

Their neural patterns... they're entirely too complex for a non-sentient species. That one back there was the first live one I could get close enough to for a thorough scan and well... while insectoids are less common than humanoids or even reptilians, they do exist. Admittedly I am less familiar with them than I am with the others, but I'm still certain from my readings that despite their behavior, they are intelligent people. Something is wrong with them and I intend to find out what.
