[Luckily for Octavia's dignity, somehow her initial waking up freakout wasn't broadcast, so the first televised signs of her include the brunette leaning against the wall, curiously looking over her communicator. She jumps a little when it starts recording, but composure isn't too far off.

A raised brow greets the fleet, followed by a hesitant attempt at a smile. It's a bad one.]

So, space. [It's said in a very dry, unimpressed tone.] Anyone mind telling me what the hell's going on? I've got things to do, and this wasn't one of them... Whatever this is.

[She straightens, moving back to her initial bunk.]

And someone tell me what dick took my sword. I want it back.

Good words, wish I could believe that myself. Any other scarcities I should know about?

[Maybe Danarius. But Fenris is much, much happier with him being SUPER DEAD. ]

If you wish for a decent meal, you would be best getting it on the planet. The food we have on our ships is cuboid and no matter how the chefs will try to dress it up, is still a tasteless square.

Octavia actually looks somewhat amused at his obvious disdain for the sustenance masquerading as food.]

It's not rationed, is it? We can have what we want?

No, it is not rationed. You can have as much of if was you wish.

[is tone suggests anyone wanting a LOT of this stuff is probably crazy.]

Then it's a step up from the last time I lived in space. The stuff was made for nutrition, not taste. Or enjoyment probably.

[The amusement never leaves her face, but it does wane when she mentions her previous time in a ship.]

Yes. The last time I was in space, it was much the same.

[He is so sick of space fod, ok ]

[Now she's a little interested.]

You lived in space back home?

No, I did not. But before I came here, I was kidnapped to another place. Exsilium, it was called. Myself and many others were drafted from different worlds to fight in a war.

At one point there was... an incident [the country got nuked] and we had to live on a moon base for a while.

[Hey, sounds like her Earth! Welcome, friend.]

That's... a little different. [Read: a lot.]

It was. We were eventually set free, when the war was won. Unfortunately, I ended up here, instead of the trip home I was promise.

Do you think this place interfered, or were they in it together? [It's a pretty good question, she thinks.]

It could be either. The Initiative were grateful, but perhaps some of us ended up being the payment in part for their victory. It is hard to tell.

It might not even be worth putting energy into figuring out now, huh? [She pauses, her expression a little uneasy before she adds on:] Sorry about that. Your shitty reward I mean.

[He gives a lanky-shouldered shrug. He's well used to being disappointed. It's a running theme in his life. ]

It is to be expected. There are worse places I could be.

[Solidarity, bro.]

Doesn't mean there aren't better. Nothing's wrong with wanting that.

I do not make it a habit of mine to want for much.

Why not? [She's honestly curious now.]

[And because he will tell literally anyone:]

I am a former slave. For most of my life. wanting anything more than what I had was nothing but a foolish dream. It is a habit I doubt I will ever break.

[Way to make a girl feel special.

But that reasoning does get her to scowl in disapproval.]

For some, that'd be all the more reason to dream, foolish or not. [Like her.] Sometimes thinking about the possibilities makes people trapped or stuck able to bear whatever crap they've got going on a little better.

[His nose crinkles a little, the slightest hint of a scowl.]

Those are the ones that break first. The ones that have something else to be taken from them. Better to not hope at all. Then they can not rip it from you when they so choose, and they will.

[Her brows furrow, and she bites back a snappish retort. Instead, she goes with more debates. Or whatever is going on.]

No, we're not. [Well, she admits it's her.] It means I haven't given up yet. There's still stuff to live for, and like hell I'm gonna spend my time coasting through waiting for it to go south.

[Octavia's not angry with him, not by a long shot. She just sounds pretty damned determined.]

Finding something to live for and hoping for something are two very different things.

...Still, many do not get to be at a point where it is safe to hope. You are fortunate if you have.

And I've done both. They're not mutually exclusive.

[She bites the inside of her cheek for a moment.] The word fortunate might be too strong of a word. It was either most likely die where I was or only maybe die where I am. Back home, I mean.

But I can explore. I'll gladly take it.
