I don't think they can. Those wings wouldn't support a body that large, and there's no top to these enclosures, or chains binding their legs, or even clipped feathers on their wings. It's strange to think of birds who don't look as if they were ever meant to fly. I've never seen anything like it before either.

That does seem odd, doesn't it...a bird that can't fly. Is it even a bird, anymore?

[ A bit pensive, but thinking about birds is much easier than...probably anything else involving space. ]

Is a bird only defined by its flight? They still have wings, and feathers. They walk like smaller birds do, and they sound much like them as well. I don't think the concept of a bird is so narrow as to say they couldn't be part of the whole of the bird kingdom... just from a different part of it. I'd love to see what the place they came from is like, to have bred such an animal in the first place.

( then again she also thinks centaurs - who have no intelligence - are pretty, so. she may have a warped point of view. )

They're mostly used for meat here, aren't they? That's the impression I have from walking through the... market, if that's what it's called.

People seem to consider beings with wings angels, as well. There's a great deal of room for a variety of judgments.

The shops make it seem like they have a good many uses, doesn't it. Whether or not it tastes good...is another story.

( the story of how good they are to taste. she listens to the comment on angels, withholding her own opinion. angels are far from the only things that fly, and she's not even sure she knows what an angel is, just fairies. )

Oh, absolutely. There isn't enough proper meat on the ships, I miss it.

[ Shrugs, casual, and tips her skull/mask up and back and then off, shifting it to her arms. ]

( The mask ends up drawing Ella's attention, simply because it's been moved away, though she offers a smile and redirects her attention to the other's face. )

I agree that what they say passes for it really isn't the same. I miss real vegetables, too. Or a proper kitchen at all.

I've been growing some vegetables, in my spare time. Would you like some to take to your ship?

( Successful gardening on ship? She may have a decent amount of knowledge for the future now due to the augments, but it doesn't fill in those sorts of details. Ella looks impressed because she is impressed to hear as much - and touched by the offer. )

That's a kind offer for you to make. If it's not going to leave your own stocks short, then yes. I'd appreciate that a lot.

[ Eh, she certainly didn't do it by normal means, but maybe it is kinda cool. ]

( Which makes her smile - that's really cool, you know? Ella would still find it fascinating even learning it's not by, well, the kinds of methods she'd probably use. )

[ It's not a phrase she's familiar with, so she takes it literally. ]

( Ella takes this in stride after a moment of confusion. It prompts her into smiling, waving a hand in front of her. )

It's a saying where I'm from, that you're good with growing things. Plants are green, so if you're good for the plants, you have a green thumb!

Hm. I hadn't heard that one before...but it is interesting.

[ She does seem to genuinely mean it. Though she tends more towards literal phrasing, so she probably won't adopt it into her own vocabulary. ]

( Meanwhile Ella might start seeing what mix of literal and figurative she might use around her... )

Do you have any favorite sayings of your own from home? That's something I've been wondering about... we're from such different places. What kinds of things do we expect each other to know without thinking about it?

[ Oh man, it'd been so long since she's actually talked to people...what can she sort of dig up from the old dusty back shelves of her mind... ]

...if you say someone's as tough as a weed in a garden, it means they're persistent.

Persistent... Hah, and probably unwelcome for being so stubborn, but set on pulling through anyway.

( Being a weed is not a bad thing to be, on a scale of things across the board. )

Even weeds have their uses, though some might find them unwelcome.

[ Medicines, foods, things like that; she's certainly aware. ]

Sounds like something Mandy would say. ( Here's another quick, short lived and fond smile, followed by a pang and ache for missing her in the first place. )

[ Everyone here, it seems, has people they miss. ]

( Ella looks off to the side. )

She looked after me when my mother died.

( And through various other unfavorables - Mandy being her literal fairy godmother. Still, it's not something to really say out loud. )

I'm sorry.

[ A quick response, almost instinctual. ]

There doesn't seem to be anyone here who doesn't have someone they miss.

( She looks up, shaking her head and letting her lips curl up into a small smile. She misses her mother still, but it's not something she feels anyone needs to say sorry for. )

It's all right. Anyway, I feel that pretty normal. Like being homesick for someplace familiar when you're away, you can miss people, too. ... Though not everyone needs to. Is there anyone you miss?

[ She hasn't felt like that in a while-- "I miss my parents." It'd make sense to whoever she said it to, but she doesn't feel attached to those words. It's been centuries, after all. ]

A good friend of mine.

( Her answer makes good sense to Ella. There are others she misses, too, people who are good friends, even separated by distance. Without even her Fairy Book to give her that insight into the people she cares about, or to bolster her mood in general, she feels a bit isolated at times. Crowded on a ship most the time or not, Ella still fights off a certain kind of loneliness. )

It'd be nice having people like that here too, even if this whole thing is confusing. I wouldn't have believed any of this possible before I was dragged into this whole thing.
