[She gathers up all the cards at once and shuffles them back into one deck. Take it from the top.]

I guess? I don't know, it's pretty simple.

Okay, so we star with a stack like this. [She makes the stack. Rin plays with the cards face up and pulls them out in threes.]

I like to pull them out so you can see what they are, and three at a time, but you can make it so you can't see the two cards underneath and only turn the first one over, or do it one at a time, or how you want. And there are four different kinds of shapes on the cards, understand? Hearts, diamonds, clubs and... uh... spades. So you start with them spread out like this too...

[She starts pulling out the stacks of cards, from the first to the longest one of seven.]

You can't look at the cards that are stacked under these bottom cards. What you want to do is you start four piles... and you put all the cards in their suites in order, from one to the king.

[Their starting seven cards are a jack, a seven, a three, a ten, a five, a four, and a nine. Rin pulls off three cards from the remainder of the deck. The top one is an eight of spades.]

See how the eight is black? The nine is red, because it's a nine of hearts. So we can put the eight on top and then move the seven over because it's red too. Do you have this game?

[he's following as well as someone with quick, incomplete instructions could, tapping his chin with his finger.]

Kind of. It's got a different layout, but you match the suits up the same...

Let's play a round. If you want. [She pops the black eight onto the nine, revealing the black six underneath for use, and then moves the seven onto the either and turns the card underneath over. Red four.]

You'll get it once you play.

...All right. Let's play. Does anyone win?

[he'll take initiative, reaching for the top card and putting it somewhere he thinks is appropriate. uh. matching colors, right?]

Or is this is a team effort?

It's made for one person so I don't think that either of us can really win... unless you think of a way. [She prods at him with an elbow] Red goes on black, black goes on red.

Oh. [oh, then he'll put it... on an alternating card, in number order.] Like that?

Yep. [She turns over the card he exposed, glances at the stack, and pops another card on top of it.] Don't forget about these too... you just slide 'em off and see what you can do with them.

Okay. [he's got it. he looks at the top card for a moment, and...]

That one doesn't go anywhere. Do you flip them again?

Yup. Three more. [She pulls three more as indicated and places the first one on the cards below... jackpot! She's uncovered an ace. She starts the first of their piles.]

Once you've gone through all of 'em, you start over again. Or not, if you wanna make it harder.

Oh, okay. So we can move this card now... [the one under the ace, which just happens to go right over here...]

Hey, have you ever played poker?

Yeah I have, but if this is building up to the suggestion that we play strip poker, I'll kill you.

[Said totally neutrally. She pulls out another three cards from the pile. :)]

I was not actually going to go there. The things you must think of me...

[totally justified and almost as neutral. nothing will work, so he pulls another three.]

I was thinking more of a normal game. Whoever wants to join, we can cram them into the cargo bay and play a few rounds. I think an audience would eat that up.

[Oh look there's a two on top that matches the suite of their ace. Rin gestures to it. Robin may do the honors.

Now she's also thinking about whether or not they get taped in the showers. Euuugh. At least she can be invisible... little does she know that wouldn't protect her anyway.]

We could bet stuff... I used to bet candy or little bits of money when I played with my friend. We could bet money too. I don't want to bet a lot though.

[okay, he can do this. one, two. flipping more cards over?]

Back in Skeleton City, we bet our chores and such--you write them all down on pieces of paper instead of chips, or whatever. If you win them, you don't have to do them for a rotation--kind of backwards, but it kept most of them coming back to try and get out of doing the dishes.

[She stares at the cards he's unearthed and then adds one to the stacks below. It unlocks a few options for them and she starts shuffling cards on the stacks around, revealing what was hidden.]

That sounds like it'd be fun... although we don't really have chores. I love card games...

I am pretty sure someone should clean off the gunk gathering on the protein machines. And the bathrooms. And there's still dust in the cargo hold from that stupid planet--trust me, we could think of a few chores.

[he watches her shuffle cards around, but will let her have the first new move.]

Or dares, or... something like that. You've just got to use some imagination.

[She uncovers a few cards and sticks another ace up with the rest of their stacks. She seems to be concentrating pretty completely on this fairly trivial game, but at least she's awake and concentrating on something instead of buried under her covers alternating eating protein stuff without any interest at all, and sleeping.]

Okay... that sounds fine. I'm sure Michael will be easy to persuade and I doubt Riku will be that much harder.

[which was a joke. probably. he's got a card to match up, but after looking for a second, points to one of their columns--]

[She laughs anyway, a little gurgle in her throat.] Maybe Kaneis...

Um. [Rin squints, touches her lips, then blinks and relaxes.] Mmm-hm. Good. Go ahead.

[And the card he uncovers... doesn't match with anything. Rin unfolds another three from the deck.]

Kaneis, yeah. That guy's all right.

[oh, that's an ace! he starts their third stack.]

He seems pretty carefully... uninvolved, to me. But that's not always a bad thing.

[Aw yeah that means she can pop up the two resting on the stacks below. They're off to a nice build on this game.]

He's kind of a cynic I think... [Not that she can exactly talk, or judge.] But not... bad. I think. [Glowing endorsement here.]

He might like to play at least.

Yeah. [he looks at everything on their layout, but doesn't move.] I can't think of anyone else... We're a small little group, out here in space.

It's kinda strange. I'm used to seeing more people come through. [She draws another three. Pulls down an eight onto a nine, and a seven on top of that; shuffles a six over.] The first place I was in was a laboratory. Still more people than this, though, I think.

You've never mentioned a laboratory before.

[oh hang on let him move this starter five onto that six. and this card onto an ace stack. oh yeah, moving right along.]

You didn't ask. [And then she laughs, short and sharp.] And it's not exactly a fun conversation topic. There's been the lab, [ticking off on her fingers] the Port, Exsilium, and I guess you and Nel and the court. [Because why not. Not moving any cards, briefly distracted by her exposition.]
