I was told that these augments [she gestures to her own and feels a little stupid for doing so because everybody knows what she's talking about (hopefully)] can alter memories. Does anybody have any more specific information on that?

Like how far back in your memory can it reach? How much can it change? How long does it last?

No! [Elena maybe says this a little too quickly. Slow your roll a little there, Gilbert.] No. I uh... I think I should go to your ship.

[Because God help her if Stefan and Abigail cross paths anytime soon. At least anytime before Elena has some idea of how to handle this.]

Um, okay. [Headtilt.] I'll... see you soon?

[At least this time, he'll have the tea ~~because he really is addicted and it is a problem~~ already waiting for her when she arrives.]

[Elena turns up and super appreciates that tea. It gives her something to hold onto.]

Sorry, I know that was...kinda weird. But she's on my ship.

She?

[He's trying to rack his brain for anyone from home that might fit the bill. So far, he's got nothing.] Wait, someone on your ship knows you?

[She nods.]

Abigail. She knew my name right away. She... [How the hell does she explain that they were apparently in a romantic relationship? She's not sure how Stefan - either Stefan - would take that.] She knew a lot.

Weird. [Slight frown.] She's not out for blood or revenge or... anything like that, right?

[He can't say he likes the idea of anyone knowing a lot about Elena, based on what he remembers. Mystic Falls didn't exactly have a spotless track record.]

No. [Elena reflexively lets out a small puff of what sounds like amusement but is more nervous relief, looking down at her cup.] No, for a change someone isn't trying to kill me or planning on using me in a spell of some kind.

[He sighs of relief, taking a sip of his tea.] Good. Then uh, I take it she was pretty close to you?

[Hang on a sec. If she doesn't want him to meet Abigail, then...]

And... that I must've done something to insult her somehow?

[Elena laughs, although it's more of a reflexive laugh than actually laughing at him. She shakes her head a little.]

No, not directly. But we... We apparently... dated...? [She says this as if she's unsure about the fact provided by Abigail, but really it's Stefan's reaction that she's unsure about. Which is why she quickly adds,] I thought you should probably know that before you meet her. I wouldn't want something to blindside you.

[Hang on. Elena broke up with him to date.... Abigail?

That's.... that's uh....]

[For a second, his shoulders tense up and his hands curl up into a fist, as if he's about to toss his mug against the wall or break it into itty bitty little shards and let the mug collapse or--

Or he sips his tea, with an expression so dour that he might as well have stepped out of some Dickens novel.]

Seriously?

[Salvatore's furious, and Stefan can feel the rage shaking through his bones - but Alesci? Alesci's too annoyed to do much more beyond grip onto that mug for dear life.]

'Lena, if you like girls, you like girls... but this was after me, right? And not because of me?

Stefan, she's not even from our world, [Elena says, slowly. Her eyebrows are raised just a little in some surprise at his reaction. Not that she expected him to necessarily take it as good news, but she wasn't expecting the notable tension in his body language.] She's from somewhere else. So, I don't know. I don't know when or how I would have met her.

[Not even from our world - so kinda like him and Misa? Stefan manages to stop shaking long enough to set his mug aside.] I know. I just-- I'm sorry.

[He stuffs his hands in his pockets, trying to ignore how easily they balled up into fists. "I'm jealous of a relationship she doesn't even remember." But he's not even sure if he has that right to begin with.

As apologetically as possible:] You could've met her if you were kidnapped to another place like me, but... you'd probably remember that. So that still doesn't leave a lot of possibilities.

I just hate knowing that I... [Elena shakes her head a little.] Forgot her or don't know her.

[Which isn't to say that Elena wants to get back together with her, mind you. She doesn't even really know who Abigail Hobbs is. But it feels horrible knowing that Abigail is having to sit forgotten and unremembered by someone that mattered to her. That still matters even if they aren't together.]

[When she puts it like that...]

I don't think she'd blame you. It's hard, watching someone shift from your best friend back into someone who barely remembers hanging out with you... but you can't blame them for losing their Ech--their memories.[This isn't the voice of experience speaking, because it would mean that he's watched too many people forget who he is.]

You think she wouldn't mind making new memories with you?

[Elena draws a deep breath, but doesn't let it go right away as she considers it. Maybe? She settles on maybe. But what she says is,]

I don't think she'd be against it?

[Elena just isn't sure if she'd want to. Just because someone decides to go along with something doesn't mean they're all about it, after all.]

[He taps the edge of his mug, letting that sink in for a little bit.]

It wouldn't hurt to ask. Sometimes, it's painful to talk to them, or help them move out, or--you know, but she cares about you, right? If she doesn't want to, it'll become clear pretty quickly.

I just don't want her to feel like she has to do it for my sake, you know? I think it'd be easy for her to feel maybe a little obligated because of...[Our? Her?] ...their history together.

Possibly, but you never know unless you give it a shot.

[He shrugs.] Or she might come around first, since that's usually how it goes when someone loses their... [Echoes] memories.

[Elena nods a little because he's right. Of course he's right. Out of the two of them, he has the most knowledge about all this memory business since he's been through the ringer with that twice now. (An honorable mention to his time with Klaus, too.) She's quiet a small moment, her mind already trying to figure out what she's going to do from here. But she pushes it aside at least a little. There'd be time for that later.]

It's kinda weird having the shoe on the other foot...

[There's some strange, small part of him that wants to feel relieved, because it's been rough losing your memory over and over again - but instead, he settles for something a little more sympathetic.]

Can't say I want anyone to know what it feels like, but... let me know how things end up.

[He takes another sip of his tea.] If she's on your ship, do you want me to steer clear for a while? I can drag Yosuke to the Iskaulit until then.

Just for a little while. [Elena rubs at the back of her neck. She admits with a weak, reflexive smile,] I hate asking you to do that.

I just don't want things to... [She doesn't even know what the right word is because she really doesn't know how Abigail would react to being around Stefan. Something.] I want a chance for her and I to figure things out first before adding you into the mix. It might be a little too much right away.

[He shakes his head.] No problem. I've been meaning to make him help me out with the Center anyways.

[Some small part of him doubts that the good Captain'll mind, but details.]

I get that. I hope you two figure out something that works, no matter what that is. Even if you may never remember her, she still cares about you - and that's gotta be something.

[There's a flicker of a smile. For a moment that seems that will be all there is, but then Elena manages to smile a little wider.]

I'm really glad you're here, Stefan.

[She's (probably) said that before. But it bears mentioning again now. Things are complicated between the two of them as they have been for a while back home, albeit in different ways. None of that, however, discounts the support Stefan readily gives her with little asking.]

[She could ask him to move a whole planet, and he'd try his best to fulfill that request because when she smiles like that, he feels like he's home. As complicated as things get (or have gotten), she's still one of the most important people in his life (lives?)]

Not as glad as I am that you're around.

[He's teasing a little, but he no longer feels the need to duck his head or avoid her gaze when he says these things.]

Seriously. I couldn't have asked for anyone better from home to join me, even if... well, the circumstances're less than ideal.
