I got a message a few days ago that I've been assigned to a ship called the Vanquish... but since we're all still stuck here for now, I wanted to introduce myself to my crew. I'm Alphonse! I'm the gigantic suit of armor, so I'm a little hard to miss if you'd like to talk in person...

I wouldn't mind finding a sparring partner, either. I need to make sure my skills are still sharp.

Do you know what alchemy is? That might help you understand it better...

You, too! Mostly hand-to-hand combat, though I can use weapons, too. I don't think we have any weapons here, though.

[hmm] I've got a few obsidian daggers, but I was also working on steel knives before we all got gathered here. You're welcome to them, but the size may be inappropriate for you.

It's the attempted transmutation of one material to another. They were quite popular when the humans were still figuring out what chemistry is.

That's right- in my world, it developed into an everyday science people use. My country mostly uses it for military and combat purposes- making weapons and fire and the like- but there's a version from the country of Xing that's used for medicine and healing. Anyway... one day, Brother and I tried a transmutation that was far beyond our level. It... backfired.

I'll have to try them out! I'm plenty powerful on my own, but having weapons can't hurt.

For the most part, alchemy is generally considered to be - [wait. This looks like it's the part where somebody shares something and she's supposed to listen instead of arguing technicalities.]

You transmuted yourself into armor?

Not exactly... my body disappeared as part of the failed transmutation, so Brother attached my soul to this armor. My body is still functioning, but I can't access it right now.

[souls are such a tricky subject for a species that simply makes more members. She might simply equate 'souls' with 'minds.']

That doesn't even remotely resemble any alchemy I've ever se - Uh. [wait wait] W-well, it's easier being inorganic. One simply spends much less time eating, voiding, and sleeping.

I don't think it is. [Al's trying hard not to lose his temper, because she obviously doesn't know any better.] I started out in a flesh and blood body, and I'd take mine back if I could.

[hmmm] Most humans do seem particularly attached to food.

[at least she has nothing else to say on that topic, though she's starting to look exceedingly thoughtful.

But hooooow? Humans don't work like this. Shoving a brain into a suit of armor shouldn't work either. Maybe there's a computer? Is he a robot? Wasn't there a movie like that??]

There's also the fact that this body could reject my soul at any time. It's not my real one, so at some point- I have no idea when- it will leave to seek my real body.

...I don't suppose a fence or a mesh of any sort will work for that type of problem. What will you do, then?

No... as far as I can tell, there's nothing to stop it.

Brother and I have talked about it, and we guess we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. Maybe since I'm not in my own world any more, it won't be an issue.
