[The broadcast begins before he's really awake.

He is a scruffy man of difficult to determine age, wearing black pants, a white (ish) shirt with the sleeves rolled up and a black tie that seems redundant since it's loose and his shirt isn't buttoned to the collar anyway.

He comes awake with a deep inhale and eyes flying open, flicking around him. They're perfectly normal brown eyes that lock onto the communicator fast.

Rolling from the bed, he vanishes from view. There's some muttered cursing, sneezing and then the click of a lighter.

When he comes back into view, the cigarette is tucked into his mouth with ages old familiarity.]

I better be able to fucking get more cigarettes on this tin can.

I fucking hate rent-a-cops. [He comes to lean against the wall near her, flicking his lighter out and striking it a couple of times.]

What about food?

Food is provided, more or less. The...efficiency of it drives most people to try and stock up when they can.

[nutritious paste isn't exactly food, even if it keeps you fed.] The amenities here on the larger ship surpass what we usually get.

[Bigby looks more unhappy by the moment.]

I can avoid eating for a while. Until we get some decent food. Or onto a world with large game.

[He could eat up. That works. Right? Shit.]

Fuck. No cigarettes, no booze, no actual food, how the fuck does anyone survive?

[she actually looks a little amused]

Just because the food tastes odd doesn't mean it's not edible. [that's a smile] I'm sure we've all survived worse.

And like I said, the kitchen here is more well-stocked than usual. They were fighting over the alcohol when we first arrived, if I recall correctly.

[there's even real meat in the fridge]

[Edible and edible are not the same.]

Eh, I'm not fighting for booze. Cigarettes, maybe, but not booze.

It might be a good time to start quitting.

[no judgment in her tone, but it's probably easier in the long haul, especially here.]

[He gives a low growl and slumps a bit more.]

How many people usually shoved onto one of these ships? I might give them up if there's not too many.

[huh. That's an odd requirement.]

Around ten or less. This [she looks around them] is an anomaly.

[He thinks about this. New location, sealed, ten or less people to learn.]

I can probably cope with that without the cigarettes. Maybe.

[hmm. Slight headtilt.]

Cigarettes help you cope with people? [you don't look like a particularly anxious sort. Practical, maybe.]

Yup. And places.

[He taps his nose.]

This thing is sensitive to lots of smells. These drown 'em out.

[And he shakes his half empty cigarette box.]

[that explains all the nose twitching, actually.]

Well, most of the chores seem to be automated, so at least you won't be stuck with the consequences of a less fastidious crewmate.

Unless bathing is automated, I think dealing with less than fastidious is still on the cards.

If bathing is automated, I would get why people avoid it. Being washed by someone else is only fun if you're not in it for the washing.

[ah. Michiru giggles, though she hides her smile behind a hand as she does so.]

Oh? And will you be offering incentives for bathing regularly?

[Back home, the incentive would be 'do it or else' but he doesn't have that reputation here. No one knows who he is or what he can do.]

Fuck. I don't have much to offer in way of incentive other than 'don't be a fucking dickhead and make people smell your stink'.
