Teagan? Teagan! [ The man on the camera is young, handsome, and looking a bit put out to be where he is. This isn't his castle! What is this place? He's also sort of looking away from the screen, not fully aware he's broadcasting. He mostly thinks he's talking to himself. ]

I'm sure I've got a very important meeting with someone who will be very angry when I don't show up - not that I care much if I'm making the Orlesians angry, it's sort of funny when their faces get all red and they start trying not to swear, but still...

Have I been kidnapped? Has someone kidnapped me? I'm pretty sure kidnapping the king is treason. I can have your head for that. [ He doesn't sound so much angry as... vaguely confused and disoriented. ] Off with your head. Whenever I figure out who you are, I suppose.

Well I'm not a racer, but I do a fair job. Some, like Potter, are really quite good. They play sports on them too.

Well, do they have the phrase 'As the crow flies.' in your world? Imagine being able to fly rather than follow roads or go around mountains on horses or carts. Unless you have something else to travel with in your world.

I mean, I understand the theory of wanting to fly, but on a broom? Wouldn't that get uncomfortable? There could be splinters!

Oh, that.[He had a point and she had to wonder why that question had never occurred to her before.] I suppose a substandard broom might, but all the good ones are designed to be ridden. The spellwork that makes them fly sort of balances your weight across them as well. They aren't the only flying things, I have heard of all sorts of things being enchanted to fly, carpets used to be all the rage, but that was before my time.

You make brooms to fly on? Of course you do. What else is a broom for, right?

Well yes, there are regular ones for cleaning too. You wouldn't want to ride a cleaning broom or sweep with a flying or racing broom.

[No joke, was he laughing at her? She smiled but a bit uncertainly.]

I just - you could choose anything to fly on, right? Who was it who looked at a broom and thought, now there's what we should use.

Yes, sure. But brooms are sort of traditional I expect. And they are loads better now then they were originally. With all the cushion charms and weight distribution spells and even convenient storage ability on some. It's hardly the only way to go of course, you can apparate, or use a port key

That seems like a very strange tradition to me. [ As though Thedas doesn't have some downright weird ones. ]

We have some fun and interesting ones too though. [She hoped that it hadn't soured him on magic or herself.] I'd be happy to show you some, sometime. If you liked.

Oh I don't know, umm..maybe a creating a little flock of birds? Or portable, safe fire. How about turning porcupines into hair brushes? Well there's standard stuff too like levitation or glamour, I can change peoples looks or my own.

Well sometimes for decoration, sometimes for defense or attack. Some magic is unnecessary but a lot of wizards have never lived without it so they use it for everything. It can be a bit silly.

I'll say so. Magic sounds very different where you're from.

It can be deadly serious to be sure, but not all of it is. Some, well like this [She raised her wand and held out her hand but didn't look away from the screen.] Accio spoon.

[Had she taken her time she would have come up with something suitably more impressive to us the charm on, but none the less a small spoon raced through the air and landed in her raised hand.] Basic summoning charm.

[ To be fair, "cool" is about the last thing Alistair cares about. "Willing to laugh at yourself" is much higher on the list. ]

There's an old saying, it's not the size of the wand it's how you use it. Or something like that. [She chuckled a bit, at least he wasn't being mean or making spiteful fun of her.]

You'd be surprised what a talented witch can do with a wand, even a small one.
