All new passengers from the last few Shuffles, especially those who haven't met their crews yet, are welcome to post starter-comments here to invite those living on and visiting your ship to come and interact. Newbies could be just arriving on the ship, busying around where others can find them, or you can offering multiple options for interaction--however you'd like to set up your thread is fine. Just make sure to include the name of your ship in the header, so your crewmates can easily find you!

[She shrugs.] There's always hope. [There was also a pretty drastic plan in the works before she was pulled out. It was both an ending and fresh start. Possibly the worst and best thing in which she ever participated and not something she tells as easily as the rest of it.]

My own home is somewhat displaced now. [She offers it as a subject change.] I may have come from Edo, but my heart belongs to Adstringendum. It is also a ruin, but I'm told there is vast improvement in its future. And there is... I have someone close to me there.

Adstringendum? It's a place like this one? People are caught and kept? [If so that's a story she can very much relate to.]

No. It is a place that people accidentally fall. There was a mistake by the people that lived there that caused others like us to simply turn up there one day. Then we couldn't find our way home.

I'm told that has changed now, and people can travel freely from there to other places with the help of one of the residents.

I see. [Though what she sees more than anything else is that it doesn't fit her theory. There had been multiple prisons in the system she'd been in and they were all a little different. She though maybe everyone here who had memories of a place that wasn't home and wasn't here was from one of those prisons where they decided not to call it a prison. After all, it always seemed more like an experiment, but this is her second time hearing of one you could choose to go to or leave and she just wasn't sure that would fit their style. She needs to think bigger.]

So that's where you'd want to return if you could leave here.

Yes. [It's a simple answer. She does wonder, though...] Given the freedom to stay or leave, would you return home?

I wouldn't go home, but I'd want to get back to the prison. Finish what I started to free the others. [There's nothing about this place that would make her want to give her freedom up for it. And the idea that they even might release her back to her actual home at some point isn't a comforting one.]

Then I hope you find a way back to there. [She's thinking along those lines, actually. If Kitty's own home is beyond repair...] How bad is the prison situation?

By my standards? Close to paradise. But without freedom that doesn't matter. And it has it's issues. They play with your mind.

There were spirits that did that in Adstringendum as well. Frustrated because they were trapped as we were. [So there's something in common.] That you would still go back there to assist is admirable. I would hope you aren't the only one fighting for freedom.

I had a team there. Other inmates who wanted to help find a way out and protect people when the wardens got creative. Or when other inmates got dangerous.

[That sounds about right for any prison she could think of. Makie looks thoughtful.] How did you find yourself there to begin with? Was it like this fleet?

[The danger from other inmates was pretty few and far between. She could name the ones who'd killed or attacked pretty quickly.] Pretty much. Just suddenly somewhere else. I was in the middle of a battle and then everything was peaceful and green and confusing. Less green here.

Peaceful and green? Was it to lull you into a false sense of comfort? [What an odd prison.]

That was probably part of it. Plenty of contrasts. Everything was free and plentiful. People were open and accepting most of the time. But then they'd play mind games with us. Sometimes harsh, sometimes...good. [The last thing that happened before coming here was getting a disc with a moment between her and her parents. She hadn't seen them in so long.]

Who was the first to call it a prison? [The description makes her uncomfortable. It's actually very similar to Adstring in some ways; at least before Yun Ling moved them all.]

The wardens. There's a welcome message when you wake up that explains the place and lists your crimes. No trial though. At least not one you're aware of.

Were the crimes attributable or a fabrication? [No judgment, really. Most of what Makie used to do wasn't exactly law-abiding, and if Kitty's a rebel in a world gone so terribly wrong she's a criminal by default.]

[She shrugs.] They don't take context into anything. If you killed someone it's murder whether it was an accident, self defense, to protect someone else, or for fun. Everything worked that way. No one has ever lived a life where they couldn't be charged with crimes there. [Not that she'd argue too hard with her own list, but someone like Spencer Reid? He shouldn't have been there on merit.]

[Some prisons do twist supposed crimes like that-- some men do, anyway, to suit their own needs. But usually not to that extent. It seems odd.]

I wonder how they choose their inmates, then. By that judgment, everyone in every world should be there.

There was more than one prison. I don't know how many, but you're right. It never really made sense.

More or less. They were AIs. They spoke through a kiosk in the center of the prison. We also saw the engineers who built them a couple of times. No idea who was pulling the strings above them though.

I'm afraid I have no idea what AIs are. [Apologetically. It took her a moment to translate kiosk, too, but she got the gist.]

[She should have figured her knowing that one was a stretch. Something she would have had to have learned outside of home at the very least.] Artificial intelligence. Robots that think for themselves.
