Let the games begin!

[several days late, as has been the trend lately, the Shuffle's transmission plays for the Fleet.

...or, it tries anyway. the music doesn't even make it--just a punch of static with sad, scattered pieces of musical notes trying to struggle their way through.

when Diamond's voice is finally heard, it's only intelligible in three little bites.]

--Three disappearing from-- ... --new faces, so-- ... --Captain Halliwell--...

[and then the music blends strangely with other sounds, like someone flipping idly through broken radio stations. it takes some time for anything to come in clear, and every frequency turns up the same interference. it isn't until several minutes later that one signal suddenly stutters into clarity, and music begins to play.

wherever you are, they are playing your song! and if there are multiple people in the room, maybe the speakers nearest to each person are playing different songs, each specific to the closest passenger. and after the signal connects, the speakers will continue to play whatever song they started with, even if different passengers move toward or away from them, and will only play something else when the controls are messed around with. and the signals and machinery will continue to behave in this way sporadically, all through the month.]

[hm... she's kind of just talking as she thinks, mulling over the facts out loud] And we're all hearing thing that are familiar in some way.

Oh... huh. I guess so.

[staring at the controls and nodding, as if he's actually following any of this very far in his head.]

But that shouldn't be possible... right?

[she shakes her head, although that doesn't translate really over the communicator]

I... admit, I can't speak authoritatively on the subject, but it seems... If we're all hearing something different from the same frequency, could it be in our imagination? It triggers some part of our brain and fills in the blanks with pieces of our memory? Or there is some sensor so it knows who is listening, and changes the station to a sub-station...

But I'm just speculating. Hopefully we'll at least be able to figure out where the signal is coming from.

But if it's in our heads, why would other people be able to hear it?

I can hear what's playing on other speakers here...

Ah, that's true. [she sounds almost relieved at his revelation. The less brain messing that they're doing, the better]

Maybe they were sent information about us and our worlds from the ones who run this show?

I guess... if they know our names and stuff, they might know a lot of other stuff about us too?

[which is... kind of deeply disturbing to him on a level that he can't really pinpoint in his head.]

Possibly. They seem to have access to extensive resources. Maybe they wanted to learn more about us before deciding if they wanted us to be on this show?

[she wouldn't be surprised if they knew everything about them-- ever drama inducing detail]

Ha... I don't know if that's it. I mean, I could see why they would want some of the people to be on the show... but not others.

It's hard to know what they would consider to be "interesting". [she sighs a little. Man, the people running this show are jerks]

Well... I guess it's whoever would make them the most money, right?

[jerks is one word for it, yes.]

I suppose so. [what petty motivations, but that does seem to be the way things work]

[he gets quiet for a minute, while his brain takes a long--and frankly pretty dark--run through a weird loop of logic.]

...I really hope that they picked some of the people here because they thought the audience would like them, and not because they were hoping that something bad would happen to them.

[he might be thinking about a certain adorable and helpless-seeming friend here.]

[aw... and she kind of includes him in that category. She smiles a little...]

It takes all sorts. I think they also value people who will keep these ships in the air and keep some semblance of peace.

[hehe, she's mostly joking at this next part] It would be nice if we were both paid as well for that, but... oh well.
