Blameless gumball wishes and taxicab dreams

[On Today's Episode of Drift Fleet:

The cargo are still full of crates of gumballs! The ships are well booked past capacity! There's a new empty vessel in the fleet- the SS Blameless! Official alerts have informed the passengers that they are signed to contracts that they've never agreed to! They are still docked at the dazzling FS Starlight, but are flat broke (or have they made it big?)

How is the fleet handling these turns of events? Find out in the continuation!

[ He just chuckles and lets him absorb the songs. They should be appreciated, after all, and he's glad Howard seems to grasp their awesomeness. Just wait until Bohemian Rhapsody comes on. ]

Well, for me, they are classic. I'm from the Earth Year 2260, after all. These were done somewhere between the 1970s and 1980s if I correctly recall.

[ He smiles a bit at the mention of LA. ]

Ah, I see your point. It certainly has that hustle and bustle, doesn't it? Though I have more experience with San Francisco, myself.

[ well at least he'll probably live to hear this stuff live then. that's kind of cool... if he and carter ever get back that is. ]

San Francisco, really. What's it like in 2260? [ he can't even fathom of what he just asked, honestly. that's so far into the future... ]

[ What's it like, huh? That's a hard question to answer since he can't accurately compare it to the other eras outside of what he's read in text books obviously. But so far every Earth he's come across has at least one thing in common, or something close to it - lack of space travel and lack of alien contact, at least in the sense and scale that he understood it. ]

Hah, well, Earth has come a long way from where it was. We're united under one world government, and a Federation of Planets now. San Francisco is the Head Quarters for the organization known as Star Fleet, which I'm a part of, that explores the known and unknown universe and provides aid and protection to planets within the Federation. We have regular trade and contact with a number of alien species, and technology has advanced at a pace to keep up.

I don't know if that precisely answers your question but it's a bit hard to describe, you know? For me it's just - well, my normal.

[ Those baby blues are so earnest Howard, how can he possibly be lying? Really, Kirk is actually horrible at lying (except for when it really counts and even then he's decided to leave the lying to Sulu with his terrifying poker face). ]

It wasn't a precise question. [ so it doesn't need a precise answer. ] You know, in my time, there's quite a debate over whether alien life is even feasible.

[ which it obviously is... but. ] This is all so wild.

The question shouldn't be if it's feasible - the question should be how do you make contact. In an infinite universe, the idea that only one, lonely little planet is inhabited with sentient beings is... It's a sad thought if you ask me.

[ He's so wistful and sincere about that. Some of his best friends were aliens, and he loved discovering new cultures and races and organisms. He had gone into Star Fleet because of a challenge, but he had stayed because for the first time in his life he had found something that spoke to his soul. ]

I think I might have a song for that feeling.

[ He grinned at Howard and turned on "Born to Be Wild". ]

It's not just sad, it's highly improbable. But you try telling a bunch of stiff shirts...

[ he's once again distracted by the apt music selection, eyes lighting up as he turns them on jim. can it be true? is this real life? etc. ] Is this another selection from the 20th century?

Been there, done that. Never any fun, but I wouldn't want their jobs either, so I guess it's a fair trade off.

[ He can take a few tongue lashings in exchange for being able to go out on his missions and explore space. ]

Yup. Can't say why, but I really like the music from this period. I used to listen to it all the time when I was out working in the fields or repairing things. It just gets me pumped up. I downloaded a whole bunch - I can show you how if you want to try them for yourself.

...Yes, alright. Show me. In the interest of efficiency. [ he would have figured it out on his own!!! ]

[ He's sure you would, he's sure, but for the sake of efficiency - and, you know, not having any data he already has on here accidentally erased. It happens, but best to avoid that. He brought Howard over to the data banks where he could download songs from through history and universes (which made it pretty damn big, he could have sat there for hours sifting through them - days even). ]

It's got a pretty good user interface, but I guess it being a space station they have to make it a little more universal friendly, huh?

[ He tapped the screens with confidence, bringing up the required programs. ]

[ he nods along, easily sliding through the menus as jim pulls them up. ] It certainly is... attractive. Is this how things are in your time? All touch screens and... accessibility. [ howard looks downright hungry as he scrolls. ]

Oh yes. Everything is focused on performance and ease of use for the end user. A program not only has to run beautifully in my era, but it has to look and feel beautiful as well. The easier for an end user the better.

[ He notices the look and he chuckles. ]

Should I leave you and the interface alone for a bit, hmmm?

[ a rare flush climbs up his throat at that like he's been caught out, fingers still hovering over the screen. ]

It isn't that serious. [ it so is tho he wants to make out with it. ]

[ Oh, the other looks good with a flush. He grins at having caught the other in his appreciation of the system, thinking a bit of Scotty. ]

It's okay, I can go find something to amuse myself for a couple minutes.

[ Oh yes, he's going to keep teasing you, Howard. He can't help it, honestly. ]

[personal profile] speedboat 2016-03-08 03:20 pm (UTC)(link)
That won't be necessary. [ it's snippy, shaking his head. jim u are the worst. ] Instead of being smug, do you think you'd like to tell me a little about how this works?

[personal profile] universal_charm 2016-03-09 02:52 am (UTC)(link)

[ He has to get his little pleasures here and there, Howard. ]

Heh, yeah, sure.

[ He launches into a basic explanation of the controls. He's not necessarily a programmer, though he did write the code-virus that altered the Kobayashi Maru and the agent to deliver to it to the system. All right, so he knew a thing or two, but he had his bits of expertise like anyone else. He kept it simple to start anyways - not that he thought Howard wasn't smart and wouldn't understand, but like with any skill you started with the basics and worked your way up to the more advanced stuff. ]

The overall point is to make the program do as much of the work as possible for the end user.
