[she looks up from her tear-soaked knees, her eyes getting to that red-and-puffy stage, and--]

Oh no, are you kidding me?

[she drops her face back into her knees and whines into her legs...]

This is the worst hiding spot ever.

[Oh no, that's, like, the WORST stage. He offers her a small smile, before moving to sit next to her.]

Pretty much. I wouldn't set my heart on getting any hide and seek prizes, anyway.

[He tilts his head, his smile fading a little.]

So, what's up? Is there someone who needs a lecture with added threats of violence? Because I am totally the guy for that, if that's what you need.

Uuuugh...

[she doesn't move away from him, which is good, but she's too mega-embarrassed that someone she kind of wants to look cool in front of has caught her crying about dumb things...]

No... The forest is just stupid.

[Oh. The forest. The forest that does creepy stuff and throws weirdo illusions from your past at you. It's marginally less awful than the swamp, because at least it didn't throw Yue in his face, but still. Creepy.]

I can agree to that. It's not the creepiest place I've been to, but it's a close second.

[she peeks up over her knees. a little bit, peering over at Sokka with big, watery eyes... though she finally moves enough to reach into the pocket of her sweatshirt and hold up what looks like a folded photograph.

she sniffles and... smears a bunch of snot and crying away from her face.] Guh. This is what I got.

[He squints at it for a moment, before carefully taking it. Before he looks at it, though, he glances at her. He won't pry without her permission, he respects her too much for that.]

I'm guessing this is a bad thing?

No... It's pretty good, actually.

[she wipes her hand off on her jeans so that she can reach over and open it for him. it looks like a half-dozen high school students and a couple of teachers crowded around in someone's living room... except, you know, none of them look very human. she points to a couple of people.]

That's headmaster Thorne. [he's a big, blue guy. barely fits in the frame. he looks like he could lift a car over his head.] And that's Barnabus-- [she points out someone who appears to be a pig standing on its hind legs, and then a girl who looks like an elven princess, and then someone in a sweatshirt who's got all kinds of creepy dark skin stains going on.] --And Alysia, and Anton. They were all in the forest, too...

[Those are some...pretty funky looking people, but Sokka's spent enough time dealing with spirits to not point it out...too much.] That's a pretty...diverse bunch, there.

[But hey, he gets it.]

I heard some people saw and heard people they knew, from back home. I'm sorry, that sort of thing sucks.

[she nods, though her eyes start getting all watery again...]

I really miss them...

[Oh, Krista. He nudges a little closer, bumping his shoulder affectionately on hers. It's not a hug, but it's an attempt at comfort.]

I know what you mean. You don't feel right, being away from the people you are about. I get it. But I absolutely promise that you're not alone here.

Yeah...?

[she seems to take the shoulder pretty well. she settles back down on top of her knees, a little bit.]

Everyone seems like they're doing really good, though... And I don't feel like I've got it together at all...

[A little laugh bubbles out, but it's not a happy one.]

I can't speak for anyone else, but I haven't got it together at all, either. I'm just trying to focus on getting us out of here, so I don't have to think too much about what was happening back home.

[He gives her a self-deprecating smile.] So you're not the only one. We can be pathetic and messed up together.

[WOW she makes this really pathetic noise, halfways between a sob and a giggle? she's smiling but she's also got brand new tears streaming down her face. she wipes them away from her eyes while whining:]

That's really nice... Ugh, Sokka...

[That sure is a lot of whining.]

That's me. Mr. Nice In The Face Of Horrible Reality. I think I need to shorten it. Mr. Nitfohr? It's a work in progress.

But seriously, if you ever wanna talk, let me know. It might help.

[THAT makes her laugh again. it's stupid, but pretty much exactly what she needs right now. at least she seems like she's calming down, finally.]

Okay, okay... I'll let you know. And you can... come talk to me too, sometimes, okay? I promise I'm a better listener than I am a talker...

[He's glad. The magic of Sokka works again.]

I will, I promise. We can eat stupid amounts of food and reminisce about everything we're missing back home.

Oh my god I love stupid amounts of food...

[she just. drapes over onto the ground.]

That's the only amount of food worth having in my humble opinion.
