[The feed cuts in to the arrival fanfare. The feed watches a blond boy lay on the floor of the Tourist, covered in confetti, asleep with his face in the plate of celebratory pudding.

The fanfare does not wake him.

The pudding does not wake him.

Someone should probably wake him.]

Aww, only one? [He dodges the swat and makes a tutting sound.] Come on, you'd better step it up a notch if you wanna be best friends. Go for two out of two--these really aren't unreasonable qualifications, you know?

[He sobers a little, marveling a moment at just how real it looks when Roxas smiles. Something in him envies that. Axel shakes his head to clear it and then scratches his crown a little awkwardly.]

Look, ah, I didn't mean for you to think I'd been taken out, though. I would'a come back sooner, but things got kinda... complicated. Trust me, though, I definitely would rather have been doing missions with you.

[There's a little more light in those eyes when he looks at him now. Roxas feels so much more than he used to, Axel.]

I know you would. Things got pretty messy over there... But I really was worried about you.

[got_it_memorized]

[He looks a little embarrassed.]

Somehow, if it's you, I can believe it. [He waves one hand then, reaching over and taking the washcloth and dashing a missed smear of pudding from the kid's cheek before tossing it in the laundry bin.] There, all clean. See? I told you it was no big deal.

[He pushes the bathroom door open and heads back out into the hall, turning to hold the door and wait for Roxas.]

So now that you're here... did they tell you like what your job was gonna be? It's not enough we're on TV, they gotta make sure we're not slacking off too much, too, it seems.

[Roxas follows him out, looking over his shoulder at him to wait for him to shut the door.]

Yeah, they said I was maintenance.

[As if on cue, there's a little cleaning droid that putters on by.]

[got_it_memorized]

Maintenance? [He lets the door swing closed, then shoves his hands into his pockets again and falls into step alongside Roxas.] I would'a figured you'd be security or something, being the heavy hitter you are. [He grins slyly.] Betcha you'll never guess what my job is~

Well, I didn't choose.

[Oh man, here comes the bragging.]

Go on, hot-shot, tell me.

I guess you'll learn a lot about how stuff works... I'll make sure to call you if the gravity breaks.

[The grin widens.]

Oh come on, you're not even gonna guess? All right, fine, I'll tell ya. I was just the comms guy--you know, snooping around and listening in on people's conversations. I'm good at that, right? Well, our captain got voted off the show or something, 'cuz she's not here anymore... so guess who got promoted? [He looks very pleased with himself.]

... Our ship is gonna crash.

[got_it_memorized]

[The pleased look falls off his face and he gives Roxas a glower.]

Wow, rude, you think I'm not cut out for this job? I took the reins when you were a zombie and look, you turned out fine! [He folds his arms with a harrumph.] Nobody has any faith in me, I get no respect around here, sheesh.

[journeybroken]

Me turning out fine is a pretty broad assumption for somebody who doesn't remember over half a year of stuff.

[got_it_memorized]

That's--! [There's a beat of silence, and then Axel just gives him a flat look.] Okay, the next thing I'm teaching you is some manners.

[Besides, according to Sora, Roxas is behind, too! Axel doesn't like the idea that Roxas and Sora merge together at some point in the future, but this timeline discrepancy is so not his fault.]

For your information, I'm taking it seriously, okay? In any case, it's mostly ceremonial--the ships are on a fixed course and it's not like we're a bunch of battle cruisers or anything.

[journeybroken]

Well, I guess that helps.

[He grins again. Manners are definitely something he could use a refresher for, apparently. He uses them with other people, Axel!]

[He folds his arms and harrumphs.]

Fine, if you're so worried about it, why don't you be my first mate, then? [He squints.] That means you're second in command, like... my deputy. I think every ship's supposed to have one, but since it's all kind of just for show anyway they don't really push it too much.

[journeybroken]

They don't designate who that is?

[He snorts, and laughs a little.]

And you'd trust me in an emergency like that?

[got_it_memorized]

Nope, I guess they wanna leave it up to us.

[He flicks Roxas in the shoulder.]

'Course I would! It's like back home: we're partners! You've got my back when we're taking out Heartless, right? [He pauses and looks at him very seriously, then reaches out and pinches his earlobe.] Right?

Ah! [OW WHY]

Owowowow--yes! Of course I do! Stop!

[He releases his ear and claps him on the shoulder.]

Excellent, then you're hired! Come on, I'll show you to quarters. It's a little... cozier than I'd like, but whatever works, I guess.
