[boy oh boy, isn't everyone just so excited to explore this... charming... place...?

this is a game-wide mingle and the timeframe isn't super-important, so throw in with whatever you want! play war games, go shopping for gas masks, get lost in the wilderness, hide up in the Iskaulit and refuse to set foot on the moon, anything goes.

[ Well, this isn't good. Obi-Wan fingered the lightsaber Ahsoka had given him. It won't cut anyone down but it'll leave a nasty burn if things get ugly. For now, he'll hang back. A Jedi waits for the right time to act. ]

_{[ The right time to act would have been before he got into the mess, but the thought is appreciated Obi - kind of. As it is, Kirk continues to protest the affair - that is until the man swings and catches Kirk on the jaw, sending him reeling and spluttering into the mud. He coughed as the crowd roared and laughed, wiping mud from his face and his eyes sparking as he gained the little bridge once more. ]}

Okay, I tried to be civil about this....

_{[ His opponent grinned widely with teeth in dire need of dentistry, only to have it smacked off his face as Kirk dropped and swung low with his leg, knocking the man's feet out from under him and sending him into the mud. He had not been idle in the year of his recovery, and he wasn't afraid to use what he had been learning for the offense rather than just the defense. ]}

[ He briefly pinched the bridge of his nose. Where was he, on Malastare? Still, his lightsaber is in his hand as he waits.

Not yet, the Force says, wrapping around him. ]

_{[ Look, he did not start this fight, but like hell he was going to go down without one. It occurred to him, once again, that Pike had warned him he liked to fight a touch to much, but right now he thought that worked in his favor. One dunk into that stinking mud was enough and he was not about to let a bully continue to get his way. Maybe next time he would think before challenging someone he thought he could humiliate for the hell of it.

The opponent returned to the bridge, glaring death at Kirk, and swung wildly. Kirk barely managed to block with the staff before abruptly stepping up and inside the other's reach. He shoved with his shoulder before punching hard into his thigh. While the man gasped with the pain, he slid back and whacked him with the noodle, sending him sprawling into the mud once more.

The crowd jeered and cheered in equal measures this time, Kirk not reacting and watching his opponent climb from the mud instead. ]}

[ He sighs.

He's going to get his robes dirty, he thinks with a pang.

How barbaric.

With that, he climbs to the top of the wall and neatly jumps into the pit. His lightsaber blazes with furious light as Obi-Wan uses the Force to pin the man against the wall. ]

_{[ Well, that... was unexpected. Kirk stares as Obi pins the man, though the action of using the Force isn't really all that starting. Telekinetic and telepathic powers are not unknown to the Federation. Vulcans had the latter ability, as he well knew. The light saber is a different point of interest, but one he would have to look into later. First things first - ]}

What do you think you're doing?

_{[ He puts one hand on his hip, his captain voice on as he watches Obi, the crowd clearly not pleased with this turn of events either, booing and hissing. ]}

Time to go, Captain.

[ With his free hand, he tears open the door, tossing it to the side casually. ]

Unless you're that determined for round two?

_{[ Huh, so, strong telekinesis then, but he gathered that already from the fact he was pinning a man to the wall. He arched a brow at Obi and didn't make any attempts to leave just yet. ]}

Round three, and I was going to win. Butting in doesn't teach that one a lesson.

_{[ He pointed to the man Obi had pinned. ]}

I've run across his type before. He's a bully, picking out those he thinks he can easily beat for the slightest insult real or imagined to get his kicks.

_{[ The crowds hissing intensified and Kirk glanced around and made a sound with his tongue behind his teeth. Regardless of what he had intended, staying here would be more dangerous than leaving. Mobs were dangerous beasts, and all it would take was one word or thrown object...

He tossed his staff into the mud and headed for the exit Obi-Wan had torn open, pausing to look at the man who had challenged him. ]}

Speaking from experience, you should stop picking fights with everyone. The next person might not be as nice as me - or him.

_{[ He jerked his thumb at Obi-Wan before striding out. ]}

[ Really? A speech? And Anakin complained about his moral high ground. Still, it's best to leave now. Obi-Wan drops the man (not too gently) and smashes the lights with the Force, letting Kirk and himself leave in the cover of darkness. ]

I was not aware you saw planetary cultures as a sort of school ground.

I don't. But he started it, and I don't have an issue with helping someone see the error of their ways.

_{[ He's still bristling some at Obi-Wan's interference, walking quickly through the dark. ]}

When you see an injustice, do you simply pass it by?

When I see an injustice, I try not to use the same lessons as the one perpetuating them.

[ Bristle all your want. Obi-Wan has a lot of experience with headstrong padawans who think fighting is the only way to change things. ]

Also, "he started it"? Aren't you a Starfleet Captain? I hope that's not what you say during a diplomatic conflict.

Sometimes that's the only way to reach people.

_{[ As he should well know too. He sighed and rubbed the bridge of his nose. ]}

It is a statement of fact. I was trying to back out of the crowd and as happens in crowds, you bump people. He took it as a mortal offense and forced me into the arena. I tried to reason, he didn't want to listen, so I decided to speak in a language he understood.

While I dislike it, sometimes diplomacy takes that route. He was almost as bad as a Klingon.

There will be bullies on all walks of life. Ones you can't reason with, ones you can't help.

[ Ones who die too soon. ]

I'm not saying it's wrong to fight. But it becomes a dangerous line when you enjoy it.

_{[ There might be a physical wince at those words. They echoed one of the last conversations he had with Pike, his fist clenching at his side. He had not started this fight and while, yes, he did enjoy a good fight he had not enjoyed that match. There was nothing to be proud of in that fight. ]}

Who says I enjoyed that?

_{[ He turned to look at Obi-Wan. ]}

There was nothing good or to be enjoyed about that fight. It was a necessity, both to defend myself and to make a point.

[ And he's a little more gentle. ]

Making a point by hurting others seems a little counterproductive.

I know it sounds contradictory. But there are times where that's the only language they can understand, the only way to make them understand what it is they've been doing to others.

_{[ He took a breath. ]}

Some people are just like that. I'm not saying I use it for every situation, but there are certain ones where words just aren't going to accomplish anything.

Really?

[ He's quiet as they walk down the path. ]

I killed my first bully when I was fourteen.

That seems a bit of an overreaction, not knowing the circumstances around it.

_{[ Obi admitting he had killed someone didn't seem to shock Kirk, or garner much reaction at all. Maybe recent events had made such statements less of a shock. He had never personally killed anyone, but his actions had led to deaths, and frankly he did not see much of a difference - at least to himself. ]}

He was a student at the Jedi temple. He had a deep loathing for me, that was twisted by a darker outside force. We fought and he fell to his death.

[ It took many years to reconcile that. He remembers going to court, facing Bruck's parents . . . his brother. The guilt never fully went away, though it got easier over time. ]

It is possible, had you kept fighting, that a similar end might have been met for your bully. And even though it may not be from your hand, a fight rarely comes with clean consequences.

A Jedi's service is to life. All life. He's hurt but he's alive. My involvement will not stain him enough that he would suffer or die. That is enough.

_{[ Ah, an accident, but a costly one. A mistake. Someone else had paid the price. He knew that guilt, and he wrestled with it still himself. He wasn't sure he would ever get over it, and sometimes in his dreams he could still see the numerous letters of condolence he wrote to families for the men and women he had lost. Bones and Spock said he did not have to do them, but sitting there in his hospital bed he had seen them as a penance, a tangible accounting for the true cost of his actions, of his own bullheaded blindness. ]}

Believe me, I learned that lesson. Expecting anything you do to come away clean is foolish - you can only hope for it all to work out right and that you made the right choices.

_{[ He considered Obi-Wan again. ]}

Maybe. Maybe not. Maybe you've instilled a bitterness in him, having come up against a force he could not fight. Me - I'm just a person. I was more skilled than him, but he landed a blow on me at least once and I'm not insurmountable. What you did - that telekinesis - he couldn't fight that. He was powerless. That sort of feeling can leave something darker in its wake.

Or who knows? Maybe it's enough to knock him onto a better path. I doubt either of us will be here long enough to find out.

It's probably for the best that we don't leave a large imprint on a different galaxy.

[ Light. They were finally away from the arena. Obi-Wan pulls away the metal grate with the Force, pushing it aside. ]

_{[ Kirk steps through and rolls his neck, cracking it, and then arches his spine, doing the same. In the light he gets a look at his hands and grimaces. Covered in mud. Great. ]}

Probably.

_{[ He takes a breath and runs a hand through his hair (already going crunchy from dried mud). Be a damn adult, Kirk. You're a captain now, and while he didn't exactly agree with Obi's interference, the man had helped him out of a sticky situation. ]}

Thank you, by the way, for your help. I don't know if I would have been cheered or mobbed if I had actually won. And since I plan to go gather some samples from the forests later, I would rather not be potentially seriously injured.

[ Dryly. ] Mobbed, most likely.

[ But Kirk doesn't have Obi-Wan's senses, his ability to tell what direction a situation might go. ]

_{[ It's said wryly and with the slightest roll of his eyes. But he isn't one to hold grudges or linger long over things that did not bear lingering. ]}

If you want to join me, I'll go out exploring probably tomorrow. You know, once I get cleaned off.

[ Hm. He strokes his beard. He does enjoy exploring and checking on the indigenous species. Still, outside for long periods of time, even with a breather might not be the wisest option. ]
