Years of training. You show a lot of promise. I've trained with many Jedi, but many have trouble attaining that state of calm that you've showed.

Your stance is more Shien than Soresu. I can recommend another teacher if that's what you wish to pursue.

Really? [What is praise? Is it something you eat? That is to say, Finn's visibly thrown off balance (though pleased) by the compliment.] But that's just from practice with other weapons. You gotta stay calm with a blaster or you'll shoot all over the place.

[This may explain why Finn is in the top percentile of Stormtroopers in his class.]

I--can't say I ever heard of either of them. You're the one who can make the call. But I like what you did, how you didn't let anything get past you.

Soresu.

[ Obi-Wan's demeanor changes, to one of a teacher. He crosses his arms. ]

Soresu is the ultimate defense, to use your opponent's weaknesses against them. It does prologue the battle, but it leaves you in control and very little up to chance. There are other techniques - for power, speed, flexibility. What you choose to excel in is up to you.

Soresu. [He deactivates the lightsaber and offers it back.]

If things go the way I want them to, I'm not going to seek out a fight. All I'd need to do is hold someone off until my friends can get away, or get help.

Defense--maybe flexibility--is what I'd need for that.

Ahsoka uses Shien, the stance you started with. She's your best option if you want to try that kind of style. Ask around. Experiment. Then you can come back when you've decided.

I don't know if Luke even has a Form. Those things . . . might have been lost when the War ended.

I wouldn't. Some even called it the age of heroes. Grand titles and epic battles all over the galaxy.

You know? It's all I ever trained for--the epic battles, I mean--but I'd be just as happy if I never saw one again. Sometime you got to fight. I know that better than I used to, and that's why I asked for your help. But what I really want is for it not to have to be that way.

[ Like the clones, and yet unlike them. The younger clones . . . like Waxer and Boil would talk like this. ]

[Finn bites his lip, badly hiding the surge of panic that comes up at that question. But no, they didn't have Stormtroopers yet in the Clone Wars. And General Kenobi'd been working with the clones, not against him. So it's not a bad thing, right?]

Y-yeah. It's all I ever knew until a little while ago.

[ Poe kind of spilled your entire life story. ]

[Come now, that's not fair to General Kenobi. Finn grimaces and chooses his words carefully.]

I was trained to do one thing. Obey without question. No names, only numbers. They were right and everybody else was wrong. There was no room for other points of view or a chance to do what you wanted instead of what they told you.

[He shakes his head lightly as if to clear it.]

And the things everybody complains about here, like the food and the close quarters? It was worse there.

[ So nothing like the Clones. He hesitates briefly. The Clones wouldn't have survived this long anyway, but still. ]

Of course! [That he feels easier to talk about. Anything is easier to talk about than his own life.] It was a big question, whether they should use clones again or not. They never did in my time. General Hux always said ordinary troopers would provide equivalent results at a fraction of the cost, even though the time was doubled.

[That sounded a lot like rote repetition rather than a well-thought-out response, but there you have it.]

But I talked to Ahsoka, and she said you were with the 501st? They're legendary.

That was Anakin's division. Mine was the 212th.

[ And while Obi-Wan knows of Order 66, he still wonders what happened to the Clones. To Cody and his other troopers. ]

It's probably for the best that they didn't use clones, though . . . I can imagine their current ideologies aren't any better.

Oh, right, you were in different divisions. [Well, the 501st was legendary, anyway.]

--If you mean, are we--they--still treated like disposable killers, then yeah. It's not.

[He grimaces.] But General Organa doesn't hold with that. I'm with her forces now, and it's a lot better.

[beardstrokes]

[ He smiles, amused. ]

I'm not surprised. Leia would know how to look after her men.

[ Though it's impressive that Finn managed to leave at all. Obi-Wan knows the kind of indoctrination that goes on. The Jedi had lessened it to some extent for the Clones, but not enough. Never enough. ]

[They're sure not supposed to be able to break their programming--but Finn has to wonder if that's just more propaganda. If he could do it, surely anyone could?]

She does. And she's got the skills to back up her reputation, too. Not everyone can say that.

If anyone can, it's her.

[ Their differences aside, he has no doubt in her abilities. ]

So. Lightsabers aren't something we can just find on the planets, right? So that means I should try to find a baton or something the right size to practice with?

You can have my staff for now. Ahsoka might be able to make one for you. Unfortunately, they're not proper sabers but it'll give you a feel for one.
