[ She grins, nudging his arm with her own. ]

I'm sure they will all quiver in fright.

They will when I turn into a lioness and bite them in the backside.

[ She huffs. ]

[ He smiles despite himself. ]

I don't believe the situation is so dire.

At least you know that you have someone at your back.

[ And she means it, gentle and sure, her eyes flicking over his face before she hums. ]

And I can be scary as myself, too. Have you ever seen a flock of birds fly at someone's head?

[ He does know that, though the confidence wavers from time to time. ]

I can't say that I have.

I can summon them, if you'd like to see some magic. Not ones that would attack you, of course! Just birds...

[ She worries, for a moment, that she's too earnest and pushing too hard, and she resists the urge to take a step back and literally give Charles space. ]

[ He briefly waves off her concern. ]

Certainly. Go ahead.

[ Brightening, she moves forward and steps out so she's a little in front of Charles before she draws her wand, careful and sure. The incantation is familiar and so is the movement itself - it's one of her favourite charms, after all - and with a quick wave and a whisper birds appear from the end of her wand, canaries that flutter around the two of them before twisting into shapes and seeming to simply disappear. ]

Ta da.

[ His expression brightens as it always does when someone is displaying their abilities. ]

Fascinating. They were corporeal, but not quite physical.

That was a charm, one of my favourites, and - you're right, and they don't last forever, but they're lovely, aren't they?

[ Her wand slips back up her sleeve to the brace Leo had made her. ]

There's all kinds of magic - defensive, protective, dangerous, summoning and dismissing, travelling...

I've seen many variations of magic.

[ And while he's tried to understand it, the rules kept changing. Science was a little more reliable. ]

Unfortunately, I've never gotten close to fully understanding it.

I don't think we can understand it, really. There is mathematics, of course, and some of it does follow a logical formula, but...

[ She huffs out a noise, a curl of hair flicking on her face. ]

I gave up trying to make it all make sense a long time ago.

I'm surprised you can manage that. I would have been deeply frustrated with it long ago.

[ He rubs his Fawn mark before speaking again. ] I can - turn into an otter. It's a defense mechanism.

Really? [ Hermione turns back to look at him, hair flying behind her a little like literal whiplash, and her eyes widen as she beams. ] So you can only do it when you're in danger, or is it any time at all? My patronus used to be an otter, you know - the animal that most fit who I was, I suppose, but it changed.

I can do it at will, thankfully.

[ He'd be mortified if he turned into an otter whenever danger hailed. It was useful in the library, when many of the levels were submerged in water, but otherwise Charles pretended that he didn't have it. ]

Me too. I don't think I've heard of anyone that couldn't do it willingly, but you never know. Magic is strange.

[axiomed]

[ He can't help but smile. ]

An interesting thing for a magic-user to say.

A magic-user who started off not believing it was real. [ She smiles, shaking her head. ] Some of it is entirely logical, but some of it doesn't make sense, either. It's been harder than people realise for me to really wrap my mind around it, even if learning about it and studying has been wonderful.

Then you weren't always a wizard?

[ How does one suddenly realize magic is real? Was it akin to the way mutants discover their own abilities? ]

[brainiest]

I think it's that I was always a witch, but I didn't know I was one until I got my letter for school. I just did little things like falling out of trees without getting hurt and growing hair without really understanding what was doing it.

[axiomed]

[ Wryly. ] I wish getting my powers was on the charming side.

[brainiest]

Imagine you came from a family that was highly religious or thought their child was sick and maybe - [ She purses her lips, shaking her head. ] I was incredibly lucky that my parents supported everything I did. They were more accepting than many of the wizards were.

[ Ah. Prejudice is everywhere, it seems. ]
