[the sharp rise of his eyebrows should be a pretty good indicator of how well she's pulling off that act right now. it's kind of pathetic--at least in his mind.

so, after dithering around where he's at for another moment, he decides to step in and cross the room instead of head off to wherever he was originally planning on going. yeah, he's not leaving this one alone without a bit of investigation.

'what's wrong?' he signs on his way over.]

[Oh. She must be very bad off if he's coming closer and questioning her. She's not the lying sort, even when she's well, so she doesn't even bother to deny it.

Air outside. Sick. I'm fine. Okay so she's lying to herself. He's just there to see it.]

[right. he totally believes that.

he doesn't bother calling her out on her bullshit though, and just motions at the mask on his own face, and points to her questioningly. maybe she lost hers, or it's broken or something.]

[Of course he does. She's 100% believable.

To his question, she shakes her head.

Can't. It's a harsh gesture, to emphasize that no, no she cannot put on one of the damn masks. She just can't.]

[his brows furrow, but... more than confusion, his curiosity is piqued. it's not the answer he'd been expecting, and that makes it interesting.

stepping a little closer, he signs 'why?']

[How to answer that? It's Coil, so it's complicated. Their trust level is undefinable, really.

[he's pretty close once he finally stops his slow approach, and he's got that intent, interested look about him that is always hard to read. it's a bit of a gamble as to how much of it is clinical curiosity, and how much is genuine concern.

either way, he asks 'what happens when you try?']

[She thought she just told him what happens, but apparently he wants more. She runs a hand over her face, scrub at her mouth, before answering.]

Arthur calls it a panic attack.

[Her voice is rough enough she sounds like she's trying to impersonate a lumbering skull-faced person they both know. But she doesn't have the signs to use her hands for it, and no patience right now to spell.]

[when you never speak, and hardly emote, it's sometimes the tiniest shifts that carry meaning. there's one of those slight shifts in his expression that she'd probably miss entirely if she wasn't someone who spends so much time around him now. he's still terribly interested, but edge of it suddenly softens.

it finally clicks for him. he gets it now.

'like drowning.']

[She's paying attention as best as she can, so she sees some, if not all of the subtle shifts. She does catch that softening though. It's helpful, lets her feel she can give him more information.

She nods.]

Yes, like that.

[She remembers Saemon's ship sinking, being thrown into the water, and feeling it pull and swirl around her. The pressure of the water, how it snuck past the seal of her lips, while she was trying to find the surface, but having no idea which way was up.

Yeah, her panic is a lot like drowning.]
