[ enter margaery tyrell of the windrose. remember? silks, beautiful curls, too generous of a cleavage for a sixteen year old? queen to be?

today, the pale pink silks are tainted, as well as the usual fair skin with a mixture of dirt, mud, leaves and at least three colors of paint. ]

I do believe I won against the locals in their odd little paint game. I find it quite brilliant if a little bit of a hazard if one is very attached to their clothes.

[ the queen to be seems much more of a brat today ]

I offer a different game of chance. some smallfolk in my realm say that one can tell someone's future and their traits according to the palm of their hands. I was told it is all false but.

A guessing game! I shall attempt to read your palm and if three of my guesses are correct, that must be worth a prize. I shall leave it to you to choose what to give me. If I lose, I shall of course be in debt of one prize to my company.

A lot of people believe in a lot of gods.

[ he's not really comfortable with the topic and it shows; he's a man of science, and even if he weren't...his childhood was enough to teach him not to put his faith in an almighty entity's hands. ]

Some of them say that science is the work of the gods.

[ he tries to tread carefully; faith can be a powerful thing, especially in a predicament like the one they've found themselves in. but it sure isn't for him. ]

They're not mutually exclusive.

[ she is not religious herself. she prays because it is expected, especially by her recent title but she puts her faith in her family to see that her prayers are answered. power is the heart of it all, so her grandmother taught her, not whispers to a decaying marble statue

and yet, one simply must not speak that way in her station. ]

In my realm, people all believe in all manners of gods as well. I do not know much of science but I do believe this, whatever manner of faith or worship that brings people comfort is a blessed one. We have known hard times and while I do try to offer my people comfort in such times I - I understand and accept that they can also find it in their faith.

In my country there's what's called freedom of religion - it means everyone is free to believe and worship what they please, so long as they're not hurting anyone else in the process.

[ or well, it's supposed to but he could really do without getting into that. ]

What do you believe in? If - it's not too personal.

My house worships the Seven, it is what we have been all raised to worship.

[ she smiles and closes the book but keeps it tucked in her lap for a moment longer ]

At times I pray for the Gods to keep my house safe, my grandmother healthy and my brother kept from harm as he is of The Kingsguard and our realm is at war and he must fight for his king. For myself, I believe my family shall always keep me safe even if my prayers shall not be heard.

[ that's a relief; he won't have to tread too carefully. he doesn't really need another pothole to fall in. ]

You're pretty close to your family? Are -- any of them here?

[ she runs a finger alongside the spine of the book, mind wandering a moment to the girl named hermione granger who said she had met her brother in a different world.

I have many of my realm here but none from my house, no. I do think they would not care for this setting; those of Highgarden value the sunshine and open space a bit too much.

[ margaery, however, is keen on adjusting and loving every moment of this.

Very close, yes. Especially to my grandmother, she has always been the realm's strongest, most wonderful woman in my opinion.

She sounds like a great person. I'm sorry - you must miss them a lot.

[ personally, he wants to throw a party every single day his family stays away -- but he's aware and relieved that it's not like that for most people. ]

Any of those people from your world your friends?

I do, direly. I have never been away from my family for so long. I expect I should have gotten used to that, my grandmother was to return to our house's seat in Highgarden while I was to remain at the capitol -

[ she laughs a little ]

I used to think of it as awfully far. Now it looks so silly.

[ it is a lie, of course. the targaryan queen might yet decide to do away with the little queen and theon greyjoy, well. no one with half a wit would trust a greyjoy and though she has sansa's favor, she is not a fool to think herself safe from the other wolves in her pack.

My dearest friends Lady Sansa is here, she is a blessing.

[ he smiles sympathetically; there's no getting used to missing people and he knows it, but he appreciates what she's trying to do. sometimes, you just have to tell yourself little lies to keep going. ]

I'm glad you have a friend here, sometimes those can be just as good as family.

Certainly, Lady Sansa is very sweet.

[ but the concept is entirely foreign. there is little in Westeros to be stronger than blood and none that margaery trusts to have her favor in mind more than her grandmother and her brothers, namely Loras. others, even Sansa in her sweetness, are a comfort but it does not slip her mind at all times than she is a single rose in this realm which is largely dominated by wolves. She does not imagine Robb Stark to be overly fond of Mace Tyrell when the latter is known to fight for Renly first and Tywin Lannister later.

The game is more complicated here, to be certain and Margaery is left to fend for her own house on her own but if she is to be the queen of seven kingdoms, this is but a setback on the way. She is fortunate that the only lion present is lord Tyrion who favors her more than his horrid sister. she is also fortunate her sweet intended is not present. The damage Joffrey would bring to her name here is unspeakable, the boy-king, she is certain, shall never be able to accept that those of this realm shall not bow to his will.

No. in the end, it is only Margrery, on her own and only she may guard her interests.

there are friends and there are allies, certainly but none as important as family ]

I do not think we have been introduced. How sweet that you have such a friend here. Has she come with you or has she been here longer?

But she's not your grandmother.

[ he gets it, if he'd have gotten here alone...yeah, he would have found great comfort in kitty and kate, in jim, but they would never be able to replace kara. would he even be as open to them? kara's presence has been integral in reassuring him, putting him at ease. ]

I could introduce you, if you like, she's the kind of person who's always happy to make a new friend - and she's a great friend to have. [ he may not be able to openly brag about her superpowers and heroism, but he can still brag about her general awesomeness as a person, which is what attracted him to her in the first place. ] She got here about a month before me.

My grandmother is the wisest woman in out Seven Kingdoms. Much of what I know, I have learned from her. She is very special - though very unique as well.

She and my brother Loras are those I am most close to. To think of all the tournaments I must have missed. My brother is the finest knight in all the land, they name him the Knight of Flowers.

The finest Knight in the realm, certainly. He has won many tournaments. The sigil of our house is a rose, those of house Tyrell have titles of flowers. My grandmother is the Queen of Thorns, my brother the Knight of Flowers.

[ she smiles ]

Your realm has no knights and no kings?

[ this is more comfortable, talking about her family, about her world, it's almost normal. it's decisively not creepy - it's comforting! ]

Eh, I wouldn't say that. They're just called 'soldiers' and 'businessmen'.

[ oh yeah, totally the only reason, he's completely buying that -- saying something would be creepy territory again, so instead he just smiles. ]

[ though he needs to do very little of it here. people keep doing it for him. it's very weird. ]

Yeah, money's influence. We have elected officials who are supposed to run the country according to the will of the people, but -- that's probably boring, sorry. Still wanna - read my palm?

[ money's influence. that doesn't seem to change between realms. house tyrell is second richest only to the lions of lannister and with joffrey becoming king, that might all be changed soon. ]

when you go back home among the rest of the tales you shall have is having your palm read by a queen.

[ he will never be able to tell if people are just making stuff up here cuz they can or if they're serious -- but suddenly he feels like all the embarrassing crap he's said is made so much worse. why does it matter? she's not his queen, after all, she's a fellow prisoner - but it just does, don't ask difficult questions! ] Really?

When I return, yes. I shall marry the King on the Iron Throne and become the queen of the Seven Kingdoms.

[ and with someone as cruel yet easily manipulated as joffrey, she knows she shall make for a good queen ]

Is that...something you want? [ a world ruled by kings doesn't really historically seem like a place too big on free will. the fantasy of her experience here helping her usher it into her land like a true hero of legends -- is a little too easy to fall into. ]

My realm has been at war for a long time, many children lost their parents, many mothers buried their children. The realm needs a queen. Their king is so - preoccupied defending the realm against its enemies.

[ it is a terrible lie. joff is a craven if there ever was one but he is margaery's sweet husband and she loves him the best way she can, still ]

The king fights the realm's wars and the queen must help its people, give them hope and uplift their spirits. I am not a war lord and I know little of battles but I know I wish to help my people, extend more gold to the many orphanges and improve the lives of the smallfolk.

If I say you're right, that would be bragging.

[ it's the easier part to respond to. how's a kid showing him off, too? he really does seem to have a tendency to surround himself with incredibly strong women.

next to that kind of strength, 'good hearted' doesn't really feel like a fit description for him. would he be able to put his country's needs ahead of his own like that? probably not, that's why he works it and only began assisting the deo when his best friend started working for them.

the image she's portraying is incredibly naive, and maybe after a few years on the throne she'll be singing a different, more corrupt tune, but he wants to believe that won't be the case. ]

Especially since it's sounds like you're projecting. That's -- really brave of you. [ admirable, kind, yes - all of that. but to actually go through with it takes courage. ] You and Kara will get along great.

My house has been fighting for the king since the war began.

[ or more accurately for a king. first renly and then joffrey and according to the hearsay among the westeroi in the fleet, now they are fighting for tommen. it does encourage margaery a bit. tommen is better by far than joffrey ]

and I admit - there is selfishness in that too. if I am queen, I shall be able to protect them and the people of Highgarden.

I don't think wanting to protect your family and your people is selfish -- and if it is - it's the best kind of selfishness.

I'm sorry. War is a terrible thing. Is your...brother, on the front line?

[ he knows what worrying feels like, what with his best friend putting herself between danger and people every single day back home - speaking of selfishness, he's a little selfishly happy that she hasn't had to do that here - but being literally worlds away from that person...that's a cruelty he doesn't want to imagine. ]
