[The video starts in on Hiro, who is reclined as far as the console chair will go. His feet are likely somewhere they should not be, holding him in the position. The comm is on top of his knees, recording him playing with an ostrich bobblehead.

[After a moment, he grins at the comm, and begins his little speech.]

Good--[a quick glance at the console]--afternoon, space cadets. Engineer Hiro Hamada, reporting for duty on the SS Bishop.

Gotta say, I'm not exactly thrilled to be here, but hey. I don't get a choice, right?

[He takes in a deep breath, looking around the deck of the ship. He lets his cheeks puff up with the air, slowly deflating as his lungs empty.]

I hope the crew here doesn't mind some remodeling. This place could use some work.

Oh, good! I was about to go looking for any new people, since I heard the announcement...

[hi Hiro! there's a gothy-looking teenage girl peering at him through the screen, but she looks happy to see him! she's also... whispering, for some reason.]

I'm Krista. I'm like, in the other room. [a wave! hehehe.]

[oh hey awesome wait why are we whispering. he drops down to a whisper with her, just in case.]

Nice to meet you, Krista. What other room are you in?

[He feels like they're playing a game. What are we doing.]

Um... The bunk... Room...

[thankfully she's gotten much better at noticing when other people start whispering because she's whispering... so she blinks, after a second, and shakes her head.]

Oh, you don't have to whisper too, I just kind of have this throat thing going on. This is as loud as I get.

[He looks a little embarrassed, but he smiles.]

Oh. Sorry about that.

[whoops]]

Is it a permanent kind of thing?

That's okay. It happens... a lot, actually...

[to which she might look... a little embarrassed herself.]

Oh, yeah, I've had this since, like, middle school.

Huh... So does it get in the way of--wow, you know what? I probably shouldn't be asking those questions. Sorry.

[watch hiro stumble over himself because he does't know how to people very well sometimes]

I just... meant, does it get in the way of communicating with people a lot? Like, does it make you prefer to text instead of call?

[HE LOOKS A LITTLE AWKWARD HERE, he's just so curious]

Oh, no, I actually like talking to people with video more. [she's nodding. she's also awkward, but that's just because awkward is her default mode of socializing.] Because usually other people are on video, and it's super-weird if they're just responding to my text by talking. And I don't want to make people feel like they have to use text or anything...

[an... awkward laugh.] Just remember to turn your volume back down when you're done talking to me, I guess. Or I could, like, walk four feet into the hall and probably just say hi to you in person.
