[The video starts in on Hiro, who is reclined as far as the console chair will go. His feet are likely somewhere they should not be, holding him in the position. The comm is on top of his knees, recording him playing with an ostrich bobblehead.

[After a moment, he grins at the comm, and begins his little speech.]

Good--[a quick glance at the console]--afternoon, space cadets. Engineer Hiro Hamada, reporting for duty on the SS Bishop.

Gotta say, I'm not exactly thrilled to be here, but hey. I don't get a choice, right?

[He takes in a deep breath, looking around the deck of the ship. He lets his cheeks puff up with the air, slowly deflating as his lungs empty.]

I hope the crew here doesn't mind some remodeling. This place could use some work.

[That gets a light laugh out of Hiro, and he looks toward the bunk room.]

You should see my captain. He's pretty, uh... Well, he's something.

That's a versatile adjective.

No idea, actually. He's really cheerful.

[The way he says this indicates that he may, in fact, be too cheerful.]

Sunshine, lollipops and rainbows?

Only I'm not sure where the end of the rainbow leads.

[henry makes hiro apprehensive]

Probably the dark side of the moon.

So, you got any plans for your ship yet?

Haven't had a chance to finish a full inspection yet.

We've got an engineer of our own, but I'd be willing to listen to recommendations...

We'll see what I can come up with. I've got an alarm system in the works already, and I've been asked to look at the water heating problem. Apparently we don't get a lot of hot water, so if you wanna be the better man, take your showers cold.

I hear it builds character.

I hear that "building character" is a line people use to make you deal with cruddy situations.

Trust me, we'll have hot water. It was the captain of the Three Twins that asked me to do it.

She seems like a girl who gets what she wants, yeah.

Not what I meant. She's a captain. The ability to apply the problem-solving abilities of the people around her by making them cooperate with her vision - that's textbook.

Yeah, I think you're right. But if that's the case, are you gonna prod at me when you have a big mechanical problem?

Not that I wouldn't consult my own engineer first. But he's a blacksmith, and you're into robotics.

Well yeah, but that's just about my ideas. I meant about yours.

Hey, maybe we can work together. I might need parts built that he could do.

He sounds good at what he does. I bet we could do some interesting things together.

I'm more concerned with crew accessories than ship mechanics to begin with, to be honest.

Yeah? Got any examples?

I haven't finished examining what's available already. But... simple tools. I bet, allowing for visible connectors and suitable materials, that a Swiss Army knife could go a long way on a spaceship.

Hey, we might be able to find one of those ready to go at one of the stations we stop at. I definitely gotta get one for myself. I'm gonna need some welding tools, since I can't manufacture parts like back at home. To be honest, that feels like basic engineering supplies, though. It might already be here on the ship, in that case...
