He turns around and - hello. He startles and puts a hand to his chest, and makes a note that maybe he should pay a little more attention to all those sounds he's ignoring]
Geez - hi. [at least he doesn't look angry. If anything, he looks sheepish because of his reaction] Can I help you?
no subject
[she smiles, brief but real. a little rueful at herself, and a little amused at his reaction -- but not maliciously.]
I never spent much time in here. Thought I'd change that. [and she follows that with a little wave of one hand.] I'm Sara.
no subject
[he copies the little wave] I'm Hank. It's nice to meet you, Sara.

[she moves closer to the bench, not exactly looking over his shoulder but definitely curious.]
What are you working on?

Right now, I'm looking at plant samples from the moon. [he gives her a brief smile] I like to keep busy.
no subject
Plant samples. [she hadn't even thought much about it, really, trying to figure out how the ecosystem on this moon ticks.] Pretty interesting way to keep busy. What've you found so far?
no subject
You could say it's fairly similar to what I used to do back home. [at her question he purses his lips] Without - getting a sample of the plants they have there that haven't been affected by the toxins, I'm really just going off memory with - similar plants from Earth. But even then there's obvious mutations in the cells, to allow them to process the toxins - things like that.

[she says it like it's a good thing; and to her, it is. dr. anthony ivo was unethical and cruel, but sara used to entertain dreams of being a doctor. a part of her genuinely enjoyed learning about blood anomalies aboard the amazo, awful as everything else was.]
And if you can figure out how they do that, then the people here might be able to say goodbye to breathing masks.
[eventually, anyway.]

[an understatement, since he dabbled far beyond his actual degrees, but - that was the important one, to him]
That's the hope. I mean - humans as a species evolve at an amazing rate, so they've already adapted more than just in the obvious ways. Or at least - that's an educated guess, since - I'm not actually sure how close to humans the people down there are.
Either way, I'm going to leave what I find with them. I can't do much about the terraforming, but - it's still something.

It's more than something. It could change their lives.
[her eyes linger on his notes as she pauses.]
Have you considered asking any of them for a DNA sample? You could run a comparison against any of the humans from the Fleet.
no subject
I've - considered it, yeah. I might still do that - ah, find one of the people I spoke to and see if they'd be willing.

[sara keeps a lot of secrets, but none related to her biology: she's a perfectly ordinary human being.]
