[It's half breathless, half amused, and said with something of a strained grin. Why does weird shit keep happening to her. At least this time when she's waking up there's no chains around her wrists or incredibly intimidating women shouting questions at her. Her hand aches dimly, but it's nowhere near as bad as she's used to. She must be very far from home if she can't feel any rifts nearby.]

Could someone tell me what year it is? One moment you're jumping through a magical mirror and now here I am in... whatever this is.

I'm fairly certain it's not the Fade and I don't feel particularly dead.

[And then, more quietly,]

Cassandra is going to kill me.

But that doesn't mean she wants to talk about the hows and whys of Dorian's situation with his home with someone she isn't sure even likes the man. It isn't her place and there's far too much at risk, so instead she tries to guide the conversation away from Dorian and instead to Varric and other quite famous people.]

Then I've heard a little about you. You're a friend of Hawke's?

[Particularly the Killing Is Bad lectures that come after heart-ripping adventures. He won't push her about Dorian, but she has, at least, added more for him to consider.]

I would hardly call us friends. But I have since learned that time and destiny is...odd when it concerns our world. So perhaps the Hawke you are aware of is, indeed, my friend.

[Man, he really needs to explain this to Varric.]

She did speak fondly of you, and Varric did as well.

[In his way, of course. Sardonic to the last, but always with a tone that made it clear there was affection under all that. Now that she knows not to expect the Varric here to be the Varric she knows, she finds she misses the dwarf.]

I suppose it's no matter. How have you found life here?

[Not his Hawke, then. He isn't surprised.]

It is better than the last place I was kidnapped to. At least here, I am not expected to fight a war. Or time travel.

Ah... yes? Is that not what you expected?

And I promise to keep the time travel to a minimum, it isn't something I'm particularly fond of either.

After my time in Exsilium, I have learned to expect anything, when it comes to Hawke. But no, the one I remember from home is a man.

No? You have experienced it? I know little of what is to happen in Thedas, in the future.

[Complicated and weird, and yet he seems to be taking it rather well. That's complicated and weird all on its own. Time travel is an easier subject than multiple Hawkes with multiple genders anyway, so she'll just. Focus on that.

What is the world coming to when time travel is the easier thing to talk about?]

It seems like it's something of a theme for me. I suppose that's what happens when mages get a little too uppity.

[This is a joke, Fenris, don't agree. Don't do it.]

I was under the assumption that that was what Templars are for. We have an unfortunate lack of them here, though, so I suppose this is the best they could do.

[Fenris no Fenris stop.]

Is that what they're for? I had always wondered.

[To be fair, about the only one she knew who wasn't a joke was Cullen. That isn't to say she doesn't see the point of them, but when they're running down innocents who trust them because of the symbol on their armor liking them becomes quite difficult.]

They have become less efficient at their duties as of late. [Mostly because he's 90% certain that Meredith has gone off her rocker. ]

[She wants to say that won't improve any time soon, but it seems a little rude to hold the fact that she knows the future over his head in that way. There's really no need to go pointing it out, right?

He'll know Cullen, she realizes. Maybe not well, because as far as she remembers Cullen didn't spend a lot of time with Hawke and her - his, that will never not be odd - friends. Again it's another thing she wants to talk about but thinks the better of, because at some point there must be such a thing as too much information about the future.]

Now I'm not certain if you like them or not. You mentioned the lack of them, so I thought you wanted more.

[Cullen was a noddled haired weirdo, as far as Fenris is concerned. He'd be more appreciate to know he finally grew into something more attractive and capable.]

I do want more. Kirkwall is in a state, though. Before I was taken into the Initiative, Orsino and Meredith were arguing openly, again. There is little order, and eventually something is going to snap.

[In about five seconds.]

[Attractive and capable and with a sexy new scar, it's like the best of every world ever.

And this is verging on spoiler territory, as Varric would say. She has to frame this carefully.]

If you're all aware something is going to snap, have you taken precautions?

[She knows Fenris won't die, in her world at least. Still, knowing the people of Kirkwall had something going for them before Anders went all explosion happy would be nice.]

[He can guess nothing good is going to happen. Nothing called an Inquisition rises from good things. ]

Aveline is trying to keep the peace, as best she can. She is the only one with any real power to do anything in the city. Hawke is the Champion, he can mediate, he can encourage, but if neither party wants to cooperate, he cannot force them to do anything.

[To be fair, Jove actually had nothing to do with the whole naming thing. Just, you know. Is mostly in charge of it. NBD.]

What a mess.

[That's putting it lightly, but it isn't any less true for how simple a statement it is.]

If it's any help, things do improve.

I have a feeling it will get worse before it gets better. I doubt Meredith and Orsino will tolerate one another's existence for much longer.

I suppose the good thing about being a place like this is at least those inevitabilities can be avoided for a little while longer.

[Which in no way is a good plan, but what can they do? It isn't as though she can defeat Corypheus from space, just like she can't reach back in time and smack Anders on the nose with a rolled up copy of his manifesto. All they can do is make the best of what they have now.]

It is only a brief stopper though, it will not solve the problem forever.

[Fenris is already done with this, he was done when he left Exsilium, he'd earned his right back home and it's been taken from him. He feels cheated. ]

[Jove looks down at her hand, considering not for the first time today what would happen if she tried to open a rift to get back home. Assuming everything went perfectly, maybe she would be able to get Fenris back to where he wants to be.

But it would have to go perfectly, and there are too many risks to try when she knows nothing about this place. For all she knows, she could open a rift and the entire ship would implode, killing them all. She could get them into the Fade safely, but then they would be in the Fade and that's hardly a safer option. It's too messy, would be too risky. With a sigh, she rubs at her forehead to try to the soothe the ache that's already starting to build there.

The day had already been long, adding all this on top of it is exhausting.]

I'm sorry, Fenris. I wish I had a good answer to all this.

[And, of course, Fenris would not enter the Fade willingly. It's bad enough his markings tie him to the blighted place to a point where he tries not to think about it. ]

It is not your fault, it is something that cannot be helped. I have not found a good answer in all the time I was with the Initiative, I doubt I will find one here.

Well, maybe this place will surprise you. Or maybe, instead of answers, we'll find ways to improve Thedas when we return.

[Maybe that's wishful thinking, but it's better than giving up entirely and doing nothing with this trial.]

Perhaps. We had hopes to do so in the Initiative, and as you can see, it did not happen.

Merrill and I were taken by them, they were part of a group from a planet called Earth. They were at war with a group called United Earth. It was...complicated. They wished to destroy other worlds, in their conquest. The Initiative were attempting to defeat them with time travel.
