[You know, Clay hadn't been expecting a day like this. All he was doing was going to the Iskaulit to do some workouts in the gym, even bopping to a tune playing in his head.

Of course, that all comes a stop when he sees the mess before he sees anyone else. Blood trailing through the hallway, like someone had been walking with it. His stomach churns a bit, and his first instinct is to flee and get someone with medical help. Like Jennifer, or Beverly, or...

But no, he's here, and he... doesn't really realize just how bad it is yet. He returns to his shuttle first to grab the first-aid box, then heads in to see who needs his help.

And upon following the trail, well... Turns out, it's a lot worse than he thought it'd be, and that instinct from before comes back full force. He's only had some lessons, he's not prepared for this level of medical trauma, he really isn't -

And that's why he'll be calling out on the comms - not video, because there are kids on the network, but it's pretty clear by the state of his shaky voice that this is definitely an emergency.]

I-I need doctors - healers, medics -

[He takes in a deep breath - ]

I need all medical personnel to the Iskaulit right now!

[ he leads her to a chair, places his jacket on it in case it is stained and washes the rag with clean water before offering it again ]

He goes by Winter.

[ and steve tries to respect that ]

You heard about Bucky?

I know. [She sits.] I remember him from hearing about you when I was a kid. And there was a James Buchanan here when I arrived who looked just like Winter. Except shorter hair. He told me he'd been in the war. I didn't make a connection at the time.

[ he wonders if it's the same bucky peg told him about, the one who was captain america, the one who lost steve who later became the winter soldier. their world has been cruel to them too but if steve could trade places with winter, take his burdens onto himself, he'd do it. ]

Yeah. That's him. he prefers Winter but he's Bucky.

[ despite what has been done to him, what is still being done to him. ]

Are you okay? [Because he's obviously Steve's friend and this... This was not a good day.]

Yeah.

[ he can't say 'no' though that is obvious. they've been through this once and as much as steve hates having to go through this again, he will see it through this time, too. for Winter, for the man Steve remembers and the man Winter is at present. he sighs, looks around. ]

We need to find you a place to lie down.

I don't need to lay down. I'm fine. [She looks around the room curiously.]

Is he going to remember doing this?

[ he doesn't argue. knows better than to try. he wouldn't let anyone see to his injuries, either. he sees her as a part of a team much like the avengers and if she says she is alright, he trusts that she knows herself well enough to determine that. ]

he will.

[ he gives her a nod and looks away for a moment ]

he'll blame himself.

[She appreciates that. And she's not too stubborn to get help. She's just confident this can wait.]

There was a little girl. She was already unconscious by the time I got to them. [He's going to feel extra not good about that one.]

Someone tended to her?

[ this is a nightmare if there ever were one. he is worried for those who are injured but he is as worried for Winter himself, for the aftermath, for the guilt that will haunt him, a burden he shouldn't be carrying. ]

It was the Atroma, they're the cause of it.

Nami got her to safety. [Kitty didn't know more than that yet. She doesn't even know the girl's name.]

I didn't think it was something he was choosing. [That's why she never went for the kill. Not that she would have necessarily been successful. Obviously, he got his knocks in on her. She also didn't know if it was the Atroma or something else that set him off though.] I've only talked to him a couple of times, but I think he's been afraid of this happening.

Yeah. The augments are - dangerous for all of us but especially for him. He didn't want any of this to happen.

[ and while they've never spoken of it, steve simply knows because he knows the man, different as he might be ]

It's what we have to make clear for everyone before someone goes after him.

[It all reminds her a little of that pink-haired girl back in the prison. Usually so nice to everyone, but then she'd suddenly want to kill all the Japanese. It came up every few months. The saving grace was that she was so ill-equipped to fight and weapons were relatively difficult to come by. Winter didn't have these problems.]

Yeah. I don't want anyone else getting hurt because of it. Our enemy are the Atroma, not each other. [She thinks—worries—about Kurt's reaction. He may have been the spy while she was the assassin, but she knows what he can do.]

They would have us turn against each other, this is a first attempt. There'll be others, especially if this one works.

[ works not in the sense where winter has hurt people but more in the sense of others asking for any manner of revenge against him. he looks at her and covers her hand with his. ]

You're sure you'll be alright?

[Hey, no big deal, Steve Rogers is just holding her hand. Would it be weird to have her hand bronzed? Okay, yeah, definitely weird.]

I've had worse. I should probably clean it up some. [To keep people from worrying at least. She doesn't move to go.]

Are you going to be?

I heal fast.

[ he offers her a little smile. were that their problems were his injuries. the serum made certain that his cells would regenerate quickly. it's the same for Winter. whatever scars they have, they're usually beneath the skin, buried underneath. whatever heartaches steve rogers has, Winter has them tenfold. ]

I'll be alright.

Not what I meant. [Definitely thinking of the inside wounds, but it's harder to answer that too, isn't it?] But maybe I should have just gone for "it'll work out."

[ much harder, if only because steve doesn't let those through as much as he perhaps should. there are things - the war, the gunfire, the dead men, red skull, the ice, peggy's voice, a promise of a dance - things that he handles alone in front of a punching bag on a quick jog on the beach.

he's a soldier through and through, he knows his duties. He does smile at her, though. ]

I know.

[ that it's not what she wanted to ask, maybe he's evading ]

--- there are things, people that - no matter how hard it'll become, I'll never not be grateful that I can have them here. Winter - he'll always be one of them.

I get that. [Kurt is in a very different place than she is. They've been separated by time and experiences now. But she'd welcome every awkward or difficult moment tenfold if it meant keeping him. She'd even want to see Logan again despite everything Kurt told her about the future and his betrayal. Some people you just can't give up on. Then again, ask her about her former husband and how much she wants to see him after he killed her or would have if a set of multidimensional overlords hadn't pulled her out. But part of not wanting to see him again might just be the fear of forgiving him after everything that happened. He was her first love.]

If this place is anything like the prison people will have more forgiveness and understanding in them than you'd imagine. [More than she'd imagine at least.]
