[It's a rare morning that sees Erik down at the seaside. He's been thoroughly entrenched in one of the forest settlements since landing, and hasn't had much cause to return to where the ships are docked in the ocean. However, he remembered the fish markets, and assumed it would be easy enough to catch fish there as well. Best to make an early visit and find out.

He's sitting out on the edge of one last far-flung pier on the beach, one finger aimed at the makeshift metal hook he has sunk in the water as he watches the ebb and flow of the tide. Keeping an eye out for the silvery dart of fish, or other marine life. Steve swimming out into the waves is far more noticeable than all of that, though, and it draws his attention for the moment. When he draws closer, he calls out.]

You're keen, at this hour.

The best way to end a jog.

[ he smiles as he walks over to the neat pile of his things, a towel, his shirt, his sketch notebook and takes a seat, drying his hair as he does. ]

Any luck so far?

[ gesturing towards the water. ]

[Erik flicks his finger up, bringing the empty hook up out of the water momentarily.]

No. But all the local merchants assure me that's normal. Most likely as incentive to get me to buy from them instead.

Highly likely.

[ he looks at the water for a moment. it's not a bad idea, fishing. it's been a long time, years, really, since he went. Might be good to stock up on some fish for the days when there's nothing but wheat protein and gels. ]

Did they tell you if all the fish here are safe for eating?
grandstanding: (And ask me your questions.)

I scoped out what they were selling yesterday. I intend to only take the same kind.

[He waves his hand, sending the hook back under. He'd run out of bait a while ago, but the action is relaxing enough.]

I haven't heard any tales of poisonous ones. This world has much less of that compared to the moon.

That was what I had in mind.

[ he admits that quite readily. the moon had left an impression for better or for worse and while this planet seems a lot safer in terms of water, air and plants, he always worries for possible risks ]

you know, it may be a good idea to freeze some of those fish. that way we can have a normal dinner once we fly outta here.

[ so tired of protein solids and gels. ]

It has crossed my mind. Pickling or drying certain foods may be a better option, since it doesn't rely on refrigeration. [Having fought with the oven on his ship, Erik's very judgmental on the longevity of all appliances in this Fleet.]

My mom used to do that, preserve vegetables. I think I can still pull it off. It could have helped if we had any replacement for vinegar.

[ Erik, are you at war with an oven? ]

[He's at war with everything. Especially the oven.]

The locals may have a substitute. But that would depend on if they ever have the need for such things.

Worth a look.

[ he looks towards the sea, the calm exterior there and decides to wait around a while and see if his new company might catch a fish. Maybe he can convince Winter to come, if there is a chance of a fishing expedition being successful. ]

You could try renting a ship and try your luck in the deeper water.

I could. It's a bit too time-intensive, for me. I need to stay within shouting distance. [Not that he's here with any of the parties likely to shout at him this morning. He can just imagine the dubious looks though, if he told the others that he was taking a fishing trip overnight, don't wait up.

He stirs his finger idly in the air, jostling the hook under water.]

I have much better luck hunting on land.
