[ Action, Rogue's room on the Vanquish, and later around the ship. ]

[When Rogue woke up, she knew something was wrong. Little things were off about her room and when she tried to raise her head, her arms felt like noodles. What - what happened? Why was she so weak?

If anyone is in her room, she could probably use some help getting out of bed...

Later, she will be walking very slowly down the halls, leaning hard on the wall, in order to get to the kitchen. Has anyone seen her captain? Her co-chef? Her brother?]

All right, I'm up. I heard all the 'beauty sleep' jokes already, so try a new one. What'd I miss? Fill a gal in.

[She's hoping that this will also serve as a role call. After all, she's pretty sure it'd been over a month, and she knows how people come and go.]

[Oh, so he was still here too, huh? She wondered who else was still here from his world.]

Well, you're askin' the wrong gal. [Since, you know, she'd been so completely out of it she had no idea what to ask.] Though I do recall somethin' 'bout the five faithful friends...

[ A little softer, gentle. ] Kurt Wagner left some time ago. I'm sorry.

[Sure, it's 'who what where when why and how', except that sarcastic comment drops out in the same way her stomach falls and her expression freezes, because this man has earned no right to any part of her, and certainly not to any viewing of her pain.]

[And still, because of who he is, or was, or will be, Rogue won't lie to him. She won't trust him, she resents being told this by him, in such a way, honestly, but she won't lie to him. You're honest with the people you care about, and some day she will care very much about Charles Xavier.

Which was why it was easier not to even give this one that name. She manages a wry quirk of her lips.] See? Ya did know some news after all.

News is a poor word for it, I'm afraid. Perhaps it would have come better from someone else but -- [ It needed to be said. Charles understands what it's like, having people come and go. He shakes his head. ] -- we're mutants. We should look out for each other.

[Well, that was true. That was something she believed. It was, in fact, the precisely right thing to say when she would have sworn there WAS no right thing to say. A smile flickers over her face, a hint of light in an otherwise weary expression.] Well, that's true.

Beyond that, I don't think anyone from our respective worlds has arrived. Other than a few injuries on my end and Erik's, everyone seems to be in relatively good health.

[Wait, hold on, hold the phone.] Y'all got into a fight?

[Xavier and Magneto? Or Xavier and Magneto against someone? Or...] Or were we attacked again?

More of a tussle. The Atroma was playing dirty and Winter lost control for a bit, which was a surprise to most of us. Thankfully, that should no longer be an issue.

[ And he's quite pleased with that. The Atroma won't find it easy to reactivate those protocols. ]

[Oh, she doesn't like the sound of any part of that. Her voice becomes very controlled.] An' just why is that?

I retired the protocols. Even the Atroma will have trouble with that.

[Frowning a little.]

Ya mind takin' me back a few steps an' startin' from the beginning?

[At least the most important part of her concern is answered: Winter's still here, and it doesn't sound like anyone's hurt him. How he might be feeling now, however... that was not a good thought.]

Ah, my apologies.

[ He reflects back on what he said. ] Considering Winter's regression to the Soldier he once was?

[She's not entirely sure of what he means by that, but why not?]

Sure, let's start with that.

[After all, she can always ask more questions once she understands the basics. And in consideration of that fact, she makes the channel private.]

[ He exhales. Hopefully he wasn't overstepping much with Winter. ]

Winter has a history of brainwashing. The Atroma used that to activate some old mission protocols. Erik and I had the unfortunate luck of running into him at that state. Later on, I visited him and removed the protocols.

[Her brow furrows.] He let you inside his head? An' it worked?

[Excuse her, it has been a long time since she has worked with a telepath.]

It should have. Even the Atroma wouldn't be able to craft something out of nothing.

[ Everything about the glitches seems to draw out pre-existing information, waiting to be activated. but Charles worked the protocols in such a way that every mission the Winter Soldier was meant to undertake has been completed. Re-activation should no longer be a possibility. ]

[...well, that was something, but the equally important part was--] Did he ask you ta do that?

[ He frowns. ]

I would not do such a thing without complete explicit permission.

[A frown from even a young Charles Xavier carried a certain weight with Rogue. It would probably carry a certain weight with anyone, as there was a reason he had become the leader of the X-Men.

However, Rogue reminded herself very firmly, he was not her Charles Xavier. He was no one she knew. She had no reason to believe him at all.

...except that he was Charles Xavier.

Her head hurt. I'm startin' ta think I've been in these kinds of places too long.]

That's good ta hear. [She wondered if she should apologize and then... didn't. Instead:] There are some things that are too important to be taken for granted. I'm also glad Winter was able ta ask you for help, and that you were able ta help him.

[ He lets it go. It's a common sentiment, though he wouldn't expect someone in the X-Men to echo it. It . . . rattles him, in a way. ]

As am I. As long as he gets the help he needs.
