Captain's Log 04 - It's a Rock Party

[ Hello, fellow Drifters. Today you shall find one Captain Kirk, currently of the Tourist, smiling into the camera - perhaps a bit to delighted for everyone's comfort, so if you know what's good for you turn off the broadcast now. Or stick around. It's really 50/50 with him some days. He clears his throat, for a moment attempting to look serious outside his obvious delight. ]

So, first things first, some house keeping -

For those who don't know, I'm James Tiberius Kirk, Captain of the Tourist, newly minted a few weeks ago. Please just call me Jim or Kirk, though. Any problems with the Tourist or her crew can be directed to me, or if I am not available you can relay a message to my first mate - Fenris.

[ Let that sink in everyone and then think real hard about if you want to go that route ever. ]

Now, with that out of the way...

[ His face resumes its delight. ]

Since we're all sharing what little treasures we've been getting from the planet we're all on, I thought I would join in the fun.

[ He messes with something off camera, and everyone will be treated to the dulcet tones if the The Beastie Boys. Kirk is bobbing his head and every now and then either strumming an air guitar or beating on air drums.

The song ends and his grin is so very pleased with itself. ]

And yes, I did. He's been on the ship longer than anyone else, and I trust him to do what's necessary in a time of crisis. He was the natural, and logical, choice.

[Shaking her head.] Isn't that song super old by your time?

I guess that makes sense. [It sounds like she's still questioning it.]

Oh yes, it's several hundred years old. But that's what makes them classics - they stuck around, even through all the crap that went down a few centuries ago.

He'll do right by the ship and crew.

_{[ He couldn't pick Winn - panicked to easily and frankly didn't have the leadership skills. Chloe was not old enough, at least to him. Kara was strong and had powers, sure, but he wasn't as confident in her skills as a leader. Fenris, though, obviously had quite a bit of experience, and was pragmatic. It was a good foil to his own hopefulness, and he needed that. Not that he thought he would be making many powerful decisions as a captain, but he still took the choice seriously. ]}

Classics... [She laughs lightly.] It's weird being the one from the past. Even if it is a different past. [Several of her close friends in the prison were from the Victorian era or so.]

I just haven't met him yet. [But it's not her decision to make and it isn't too likely to impact her unless something goes down while she's aboard. She can't honestly say she thinks either Kara or Winn fit better or any of the rest of the crew that she knows which is everyone, at least in passing, except Fenris.]

Heh, sorry, did I usurp your position?

_{[ He's teasing, of course. Though he understands - it's weird being someone from the future, knowing things, and also being of the past. Beverely wasn't his future, but she was a kind of future, and it was a touch terrifying at times. ]}

Not surprising. He tends to keep to himself. But once you get to know him, he's fine despite the grumpy facade.

You did. It hurts a little. I guess you're not really the first though since Pavel and Data and all. [He even gets a smile.]

I wouldn't judge someone for being grumpy. [Her X-Men could be downright hostile.]

Heh, I forgot you knew Chekov. I really must have a talk with him when I see him next about upstaging his captain.

Then you should get on just fine once you meet him.

[The past tense on "knew" actually hurts a little. She misses that guy. She misses a number of them and wonders how they're doing. There's even a pang of guilt there since her plans have changed from finding a way back to the prison to finding a way to National City to be with Winn.] You should. He's tricky if left unattended.

[Her smile relaxes some. More natural.] I will keep that in mind and even inform him you promised we'd get along if things start to go south.

That's the problem with young geniuses.

Try and catch him with his slugs. It'll increase the odds.

Fenris is an elf. Of a sort, anyways. Different from Maglor and his kin, but an elf.

Can't be male and an elf? [No, really, she's asking.]

Well, yes, but I guess I was thinking along species lines. I've... never actually asked him what the specific term for a male elf is. Never quite come up before.

I guess man is pretty human-centric. I wonder how much of other people using it is just the translators working with what English has to offer.

That's a good question. At least it seems like most of the people represented here do have the male-female split. I've met some species that don't even have the concepts. Makes translation interesting to say the least.

I bet. Translation must be tricky when you're running into new cultures all the time.

It can cause a bit of confusion, to be sure. The translators are pretty reliable, but there's always that one little nuance it can't quite capture.

Like the one that leads you to war or not?

Yeah, those are pretty important, but thankfully we've been able to avoid or otherwise smooth it over fairly quickly.
