I'm not sure which of the two we fall into. The technology existed long ago, but any knowledge about how to leave our world would have to be recovered.
We've done other near-impossible things, when they were important enough. Maybe we could find the Fleet after all, but I hope we'll never have to.
I don't think it would be necessary, either. But we wouldn't know that if I forgot, and I think my friends and I would be very concerned if I were to disappear for so long without remembering why.
