Who: Allen Walker
Broadcast: Video
Action: SS Blue Fish
When: Today
[For those who've been here awhile, a familiar scene comes onto the feed. Allen's standing behind a table in the Blue Fish clinic. The lab itself looks a bit more...cluttered than usual. It's what happens when the person who keeps things orderly vanishes. Timcanpy is behind him on the shelf, wearing a small orange hat]
Hello everyone. If you don't know me, I'm Allen Walker, one of the medics aboard the Blue Fish. Nice to see you all again.
Just a couple announcements today! We'll be holding our bimonthly blood drive this weekend. The blood donated is kept for medical emergencies that require a blood transfusion. In other words, we use scientific methods to help someone whose lost a lot of blood. If you donate, we'll gladly pay you!
If you're interested and are over the age of 16, please fill out the form attached to this video. [And what do you know, it's there] If you're interested in volunteering, please let me know. Vampires and similar beings interested in volunteering will need to be able to have restraint around blood and will not be allowed to sample the blood. The blood drive will be held on the SS Blue Fish, as usual.
And as always, there will be cookies to anyone who volunteers or donates.
Second, I want to thank everyone who volunteered to help out with the first aid kits. We've managed to make good headway on them, though there's still more to be done if you're still interested in volunteering. Largely, we need more medical supplies, people to assemble the kits and people to help distribute them. If you're interested in having a first aid kit for your business, ship or shuttles- please let me know.
[And for the last part...his smile seems to die down some.]
Finally, at this point it'd be...irresponsible for me to continue to overlook the fact that there have been a number of augment glitches in the past few months that have turned...dangerous.
[He hesitate a moment before speaking.]
I don't know why the change, and honestly you can speculate why in your own time. But speaking as someone who lived in a place that'd have similar issues....the best thing you can do is prepare. Make sure crews know what to do in case of an emergency, whether that be evacuation routes or defensive measures. Make sure there's more than one plan as well, just in case the first one doesn't work or doesn't apply.
If there's a cause for concern that a glitch could affect you in a dangerous way, speak with the people you trust. Develop plans or preventative measures to help minimize the danger. Don't try to take care of the problem all by yourself and don't assume the worst won't happen to you. I know it's by no means easy to share such things and I'm not going to pretend you can or should trust everyone in the fleet with your secrets, but ... [There's a pause as he's clearly thinking about something bad, but he clears his throat and carries on] Well, it's better than the alternative.
Anyway, that's all I have to today. Thank you. [And the feed cuts out]
[OOC: As usual, the blood drive will be handwaved! First Aid Kits can be handwaved as well, but feel free to use them as a means for threads whether it be supply gathering, assembly or giving them to people]

video;
[Interesting!]
I know I have an elf donor, and several human donors. I can run tests to see if it's compatible with either blood - er, the other half is human, right?
video;
You can run tests with blood? What kinds?
video;
[He nods] Yes, all the blood goes through tests. Usually I'll screen it to make sure there's no diseases in the blood itself. That way someone won't get sick if they receive blood by accident.
Though the test I was talking about tests the blood to determine what kind of people can safely receive the blood- usually by mixing the samples of the blood together and seeing if there's a reaction. If we're very lucky, your blood could be safe for both humans and elves. At least, that's my hope.
video;
What sort of reaction would it be? We cannot test for such things where I am from, but giving blood to someone in need happens, albeit incredibly rarely.
video;
[Or are lying about to get money. But hey whatever Allen can get that]
Aggul- [Oh wait she's not a medic. He clears his throat] Well you see, many different kinds of blood have this...security system, in a sense, called antibodies. It's how it detects if something not supposed to be there, like a disease, has gotten in.
Well because of this, if the blood samples are incompatible, they'll set off those security systems...very badly. They'll start to clump together and try to destroy each other. Which if that happened in a person's veins, it'd make them very sick and might even kill them. So...better to test it in a petri dish first.
video;
[Tempest be nice.
She appreciates the simple explanation, though, and she must understand it because she nods, after a moment of letting it sink in]
And it will also set off symptoms as well, yes? For other reasons aside from incompatible blood? I am . . . mostly familiar with the idea of them. I learned a bit in the other world I spoke of to you.
video;
[no judging here though. What she did on her travels is her business]
Yes, that's right. Most of the things you feel when you're sick is actually the work of your immune system trying to get rid of an illness.
video;
[she tilts her head in thought, then nods] It's all rather fascinating, at least from the perspective of a healer. That there is more to it than simply falling ill.
video;
Isn't it though? You'd think that it'd be simple, but it's not at all! There's complexities on top of complexities within any individual being, I've actually been simplifying things quite a lot. There's always another side to it, and always new things to discover.
Honestly...sometimes I wonder if that's why healing magic isn't nearly as effective as it should be. Because healers simply aren't usually encouraged to study as much as non-magic medics are. Could you imagine the possibilities if they were though?
video;
The ones in my world study in that fashion, so I know what you mean. It certainly makes magic more effective, since it can be sent directly to where it's needed, rather than simply - casting it and hoping for the best.
video; Sorry for the late!
I've run into way too many magic healers who couldn't tell a liver from a kidney, it gets a little worrying.
Re: video; totally okay! <3
How in the hell were they allowed to become healers? That was one of the first things I learned.

video;
I'll keep that in mind. [Call her next time he runs into someone like that just to watch her chuck a book at them]
video;
She mutters a little under her breath before she waves a hand]
In any case, I am a healer, if you ever need one in place of your first aid kits. I'm not as powerful as a properly trained one, but I know the damn difference between organs.
video;
Thank you, Tempest. I appreciate the offer very much. And I'll take your word for knowing your organs.
