[video] i ain't a shounen but sometimes i monologue about teamwork

Who: Takeshi!
Broadcast: fleetwide
Action: Golden, if wanted
When: Sometime recently!

[Takeshi has taken it upon himself to scrutinize this whole 'faction' thing very intensely!!

But, uh.

He's still unsure on why it's gotta even be this way.]

... I still don't get it!!

Why'd they got three teams? How do you pick which one? How come it's split up for everyone? I don't know where I should go... and I wanna be everyone's friends. Can't I just be Team Fleet? I wanna be Team Fleet... Or Team Moons! Because we shouldn't even split up, 'cus we're all on a team together already, aren't we? This is kinda weird... And I don't know which one I should be...

[A moment of thought. And then - HUFF.]

Even when I was fighting aliens and I was on a team, we still all worked with the other teams... We had to survive together!

[Survive is a big buzzword for him, m'kay.]

The moon people fight each other all the time! I'd get tired of arguing so much, I think my head would fall right off...! Why doesn't everyone just join together and make a super team that's got lots of strengths? How come they're gonna make life harder for themselves and start causing trouble with each other?

If we all put brains n' braveness n' surviving all together, we get something good!

Don't we?
grandstanding: (Yes everyone here seems competent)

It's in their nature. [He narrowly manages to stop himself calling it "human nature", remembering that these people may not be anything of the sort.] They don't agree, so they argue. It's impossible to be friends with everyone.
grandstanding: (Erm.)

[He stares for a moment, before realising that Takeshi must have known Charles in the other place as well. He's fairly sure he's never mentioned Charles to the boy himself. There's a momentary pause while he gets over his surprise.]

Yes, sometimes, but I argue with a lot of people who are not friends of mine. And I don't want them to be.
grandstanding: (I read your thesis and it sucked)

No, they wouldn't be. [You wouldn't want to be friends with the people Erik hates, Takeshi.]

Teammates are... a slightly different thing. You work together. Friendship isn't always required.
grandstanding: (A smashing good time.)

I suppose, on my part, I'm not very good at having friends.

[ here's barriss checking in from a pretty, tranquil meditation space. so... spirit it is, for her. sorry, captain. ]

I don't necessarily think that finding ourselves drawn to factions in the system detracts from our being a generally united front within the fleet. We know that we won't be here forever, even if we'd want to be, but there are arguments to be made for socializing or working with people we're curious about, or whose interests match ours. [ she shrugs, offering a sympathetic smile. ] I can't stop anybody from fighting, but I can enjoy a library or two without having to stop putting the Golden first.

[ barriss hums thoughtfully for a moment at that, then the video view shakes some as she moves to sit on a lush patch of grass. let's break it down some some almost-story time. ]

I told you that at home, I was a healer who also had to fight, didn't I? [ those are the only real credentials she has, after all. ] Sometimes, instead of fighting, I had to be a diplomat and try to make peace- in situations almost exactly like this, actually. I was with my teacher, usually, and we would have to listen to every side of the argument, getting them to trust us so that we could be really see how they saw things. We would have to be able to tell who was lying to make someone else look bad, who was secretly in league with someone in a different system. But no matter how much we listened and how much the locals trusted us, making them listen to each other was always the hardest part. Old arguments aren't easy to end.

Exactly. [ it's alright, she was framing it as a teaching moment anyway. he gets a little smile. ]

But especially with arguments like these, no one person or side can really be right, completely and exclusively. Everyone has valid points and while some things might not really be true, no one is arguing with only lies to back them up. So everyone is a little bit right and a little bit wrong and no one is any good at admitting that.

[Seriously someone needs to explain to her why there are kids here, this is bizarre.]

If only they were smart enough to come up with such a good idea!
Alas, I think they might be blinded by their own petty squabbles
Being unable to see the bigger picture is very common with intelligent things
They get too wrapped up in themselves

[She's good at this. She's good at talking to children.]

It means a fight
A very silly, very pointless fight
Humans have them all the time
They are very common

[WHAT IS THIS... so precious.]

What, did a monster really try to chew on your head?
That's very rude of them
If it happens again in the future you know what you're supposed to do, right?
Smack them on the nose
If they don't have a nose then bop them on the head

[ Oh no how cute ]

I do not think there is any harm in trying to be friends with all, young one. But sometimes adults don't think that way, eh?
bythewaves: (Arnold grin)

Hm, well the adult answer is "it's complicated" - because it can be. Many things may drive us, and not all of them make us happy. But if we all thought as you, I think it would be a cheerier world.
bythewaves: (sigh)

I am sorry it was so. [ He says gravely ]

It is ill indeed for one so young to know sorrow, although a sad fact of the world, I think. But you are very kind, youngling, and I am glad your heart remains gentle.
