{It's useful to be an Elf who didn't need much rest. And even when Fingon does rest, it's never easily thanks to memories that he's yet to address. So he sews. His grandfather spoils him and gave him enough cloth for a couple robes, and that's precisely what he's working on. Spread out around him in his small bunk are various bits of ribbon, thread, and lots of cloth, all of which are coming together under his skilled fingers.

The Elf has a light on, of course, but even with it his own natural faint glow is there if one looks. Black hair is braided back, and he's humming quietly as the needle darts in and out of the vibrant blue cloth in his lap. He doesn't want to disturb his mortal crewmates, after all! That would be rude. The song is an old one, for those who know Arda and its music, of brighter, more innocent days.

It's impossible to not realize he has no idea he's being observed.}

Are you the Cook? [She follows him, noting the differences on this ship.] I've worn my hair basically the same way since I was a child. I don't really like it in my face or in my way, but if it looked nice...

[Maybe she could deal with it.]

I am! {Much better than the Captain, in Fingon's opinion. He happily leads her to the kitchen and ladles out two portions.}

You lived on a sand-covered world, I can see why you would not want it in your face.

I lucked out. [She agrees. The Cook is way better. She takes her bowl and gives him a small grateful grin.]

If someone wanted to steal what you Scavenged and your hair was too long, they could use it against you in a fight. That's why I had a staff.

{Fingon grins back and leads her back down the halls to his room, bringing his bowl with him.}

I am thankful that has never been an issue on Arda, despite the Enemy and His armies. Helms helped in battle, of course.

[She might be stealing a few bites from her stew as they walk. One shouldn't waste food.]

Arda is your planet? Who was your enemy? I have a helmet...well had a helmet...for when I was on my speeder.

{Fingon waits as long as it takes to get back to his rooms and seated comfortably, cloth and various other bits of material safely out of harm's way.}

One of the Makers of my world. Melkor. {There's a chill in his voice as he speaks.} He causes nothing but pain and misery.

[Rey is perfectly happy curling up on the floor with her back to the wall. She watches him as she eats, lowering the spoon and frowning faintly.]

Why does he cause pain and misery if he made your world? Is your world like him?

{Which works nicely since Fingon also is quite comfortable on the floor. This is one topic that makes eating hard, so he ends up absently stirring the stew, gaze distant.}

Ilúvatar made the world out of what the Valar sang. Melkor was one of them. But his nature is Chaos. According to Lore, he set the world on fire and was banished for a time. After my people woke and most were brought to the city of the Valar on Arda and he was given a second chance, as it was believed he'd seen his error.

He was jealous of what my people had and feigned friendship. One of my uncles made brilliant gems that Melkor coveted, and it ended in our Doom.

{He shakes his head, drawing in a shuddering breath and attempts to regain his good cheer.} Forgive me...I should not have mentioned him.

[Rey watches him, alert and not touching her food either. When he apologizes, she shifts closer to him and catches his gaze, holding it steadily.]

He has hurt you. If you keep it bottled up, what good will it do you? [People need to air things out.] He isn't here, is he? So you're free of him. You've got your family and -

[Her smile is sudden.] ...the stew is really good!

{Fingon blinks and stares at her, a bit in awe of her kindness and perception. Then he smiles, grateful.} No. He is not here. He will not hurt anyone here.

{A bright laugh.} I am glad you enjoy it so!

[Rey understands sadness and loneliness. She has suffered on Jakku - though she never let her suffering define her or hold her down. Yet her experience has made her sensitive to the pain of others.]

So let's not talk about him anymore. [She grins at his laughter and tucks back into her stew.] Did you have ships on Arda?

{It's nice to not have to always be cheerful though. Fingon silently thanks her for letting him step back from it for a blink of an eye.

He finally tucks into his stew and shakes his head.} Not like these! We do not travel among the stars. Only sail across water, though I have not had much chance to myself. It sounds like you are used to star travel?

[She shakes her head faintly.] I mean, I have traveled in space, but before...I stayed on Jakku. Any ships I flew were over the sands.

[Which makes for a cushy landing if anything goes wrong.]

How much water is on Arda? Is it green?

{Fingon nods, happy to listen.} I cannot imagine flying over sand!

Much of Arda is green and water. There are high mountains, and some lands inland have been...tainted. But mostly Arda is beautiful.

Most of the time it's hot, dusty and irritating, but if you fly fast enough to feel the wind or rise up above the clouds, it's actually pretty.

[Burnt orange and tan stretching out for miles below.]

It sounds like it. I would love to see a green planet again.

You can fly. {Simple! And there's a touch of awe in Fingon's voice.} Though if it is only sand...

I am sure you will see a green planet again. The fleet does a lot of travel and we see many different worlds. Just give it a little time.

With a ship. [She dabs at her lips awkwardly.] Most of it is sand. Jakku is hot and treacherous; there are sinkholes to the north that will swallow a ship whole.

I look forward to it. [She watches him for a moment.] Could we visit one together?

The only way one can fly on Arda is by one of Lord Manwë's great Eagles. Lord Thorondor is the greatest of them and gave me leave to ride on his back once, it was wondrous! {Fingon will never forget that kindness.}

You know how to avoid these sinkholes. That is no small thing.

{He smiles brightly.} I would love to.

A...great...Eagle? How big? That must have been - [She looks like an overexcited child, totally mesmerized by the idea of a gigantic bird.] - amazing.

Yeah, I just don't go there. [That's the best method!]

Great! I don't think it would be safe to go alone. I know my friends will love to meet you.

{There's a bright light in Fingon's eyes, he loves talking about the great eagles!}

Lord Thorondor is a good number of fathoms, if I would have to guess! {~~What are human means of measurement?~~} He is gentle of heart and fierce of mind. Truly a mighty and fine friend.

{He grins happily.} I would gladly meet your friends. Visiting places is always more fun with others than alone.

Wow! [Rey knows that measurement, at least, and she laughs in pure wonder.] What color are his feathers? Does he ever drop them?

[She would love such a big feather, but who wouldn't?]

You would like Finn and Poe. They are so kind. I'm lucky to know them.

Mostly a beautiful dark brown, though around his eyes they seem almost gold. I believe he molts, but have not seen it myself.

{Fingon would too. He'd make a necklace and keep the feather with him always.}

I am sure I will! Friends are very good to have, and I am glad they are here. Just as I am sure they are lucky to know you.

Did you pet him? [She so would. Lord Thorondor would have all his itchy spots scratched!

Once she finishes her stew, she sets the bowl aside, makes sure her hands are clean and then looks closer at the fabric for the robes.]

This is really beautiful. Are you making - [No, that can't be.] Is this one made for someone...very tall?

He let me, yes. {As a greeting, and thanks for his help. Fingon had made sure to get as many of Thorondor's itchy spots as he could!

He finishes his bowl just after her and nods.}

For my cousin Maedhros. He is one of the tallest Elves on Arda and a very dear friend to me.

He sounds nearly perfect. [Thorondor is such a sweetheart and a gentleman!] Like something out of a dream.

[She blinks as she stretches out the fabric to the full length of the robe.]

He must be...over seven feet? How does he fit in the ship? I hope his head isn't sore.
