Huntress crew, this is your first mate, Sorey. ...due to certain circumstances, we are currently without a Captain. I'm acting as Captain now to fill the role, but if there are any interested parties, please contact me at your soonest convenience.

In the meantime, if there's anything that requires tending to, please don't hesitate to let me know. Any supplies we're short on, any concerns you may have about the status of the ship...I know we're at full capacity now, so if we start taking on extra passengers again we'll have to double up. And I'm also the ship's engineer, so please bring any technical problems you have to me.

[Sorey can be found both in engineering on the Huntress and at the Interfaith center on the Iskaulit. If your character can sense spiritual power and has run into him before, they may notice him lacking his usual protective/cleansing domain.]

Yeah, no kidding. She and I don't really get along at all when she's older, so I'm kind of getting in my good vibes while I can.

Ah ha- [covers mouth] Ah...yeah, Opal can be a little prickly. She's good, though. Sometimes prickly people just care too much and don't know how to show it. [not sure that's the case with opal, though]

Yeah, I know how that goes. I'm usually bad with that, though, so we end up aggravating each other... if Nightingale wasn't a mutual friend I'd probably leave her alone.

Does Nightingale really want you two to get along? She doesn't seem like the type to try and force other people's relationships.

No, no, nothing like that! More of a... personal preference? She's Nightingale's girlfriend, which makes her important to Nightingale. I don't think it's a big deal to try and at least be civil to one another.

[Even if it's hard and they clash and things get awkward. Look, no one said he did anything but fail at social interaction.]

[Ah yeah, meet the guy who was told, professionally speaking, that he shouldn't fight with people even in an off-and-on basis. ...who likewise tends to get along with almost everybody he meets.]

I can understand that. I think it's kind of you to try and get along for her sake. [Though he also thinks it's probably not a good idea to force a friendly relationship with someone even for the sake of someone else. That sort of thing doesn't seem to go well. Of course, he's not going to be saying that, not without feeling like a huge hypocrite.]

I don't know if it's that kind. It's also a little bit of self-interest, too.

If it ends up being a lost cause, no one can say I didn't try. It's not like we've spent that much time together yet.

Might help if you spend time with her as she is now. Though, were you looking to take her with you? [Sorey's not going to fight about it, but he'll be sad to see her go. Having Natalie around...well, she's helped keep him distracted at the least, helped him remember good times at the best. Plus, they're familiar with each other at this point. She probably wouldn't want to leave.]

No, no. She'd find the people on my ship to be just as unfamiliar as the ones here, and it looks like she's settled in well enough. If you're okay with her staying here, might as well leave her be.

I'd be glad if you did. She's really sweet. ...she's helping me keep my mind off of things, too. [He makes for his toolbox again, rifling through it.] Plus I promised to show her how to do some engineering stuff tomorrow.

[He doesn't know what "things" he needs distraction from, but he's sure as hell not going to ask. He knows that tone.]

Ah... yeah, about that.

[He's not here to tell you how to do your job, dude, but he's right here, and he can't turn off his greasemonkey brain.]

...okay, be honest with me: is this- [he half-wedges himself into the open maintenance panel and as he fiddles around, something starts making a truly obnoxious clicking noise,] -in here, supposed to be making this sound?

[Zero hesitation in his response. He barely even has to look at it.]

[He's grabbing a wrench now and bullying his way in to look.]

You're lucky the whole thing hasn't ripped off at the threads! Go flip the breaker into maintenance mode, I'm taking this whole thing apart.

Ah- right, I- [Just gonna shut up and flip the breaker, hitting the maintenance emergency lighting while he's at it to illuminate the tunnels and hatches more efficiently. Great. Apparently he not only tried to total a planet recently, but his lack of expertise may have almost blown up his ship.] Please show me what I did wrong.

[Or Kirito's just being really melodramatic about the air conditioning, who really knows.

He burrows into the hatch, giving it a more thorough examination, then grabs for his comm to look Sorey up on it.]

Have you got your comm with you? I'm gonna call you- there's no way we'll both fit in here, so it's easier if I run a video stream. And bring over your toolkit, I need more than just the wrench.

Good idea. [Sorey can barely get his shoulders all the way in there. Kirito's right, there's no way they'd both fit.

He sets his comm up nearby to stand and rolls over the entire tool chest, half of which he's still not sure how to use. At least he knows the names of stuff? Thanks for nothing, augment.]

Okay, ready. Let me know when you need something.

[Kirito doesn't ask for much, in truth- just the occasional tool switch and Sorey's complete, undivided attention. He walks Sorey through the steps of dismantling and cleaning that part of the system properly, keeping it greased, and avoiding that weird clicky-noise in the long term. He goes through the list of proper tools to use as well as their maintenance, and in truth he probably gives more detail than is necessary, but at least it comes hand-in-hand with a video demonstration, so if anything goes over Sorey's head at least he can learn by watching. And any questions he asks are answered, too.

He's just on his way out of the hatch when he notices a couple of stray wires hanging lose, though, and he immediately jerks his head out, eyes wide, and gestures.]

Okay, this- here, right here- you see those? Did you cut those wires?

[BECAUSE THEY SURE AS HELL DON'T LOOK RAT-CHEWED AND THAT IS... REALLY CONCERNING...]

[ARE THERE RATS UP HERE?????

Sorey balks at his urgency and sticks his head in the hatch, staring at the wires Kirito's gesturing to.]

I don't- [No, he does remember.] Oh- yes. I did. I thought they were for the overload circuit that I was trying to strip...

[there are rats everywhere, that's how ships work ~~also Dezel feeds them so they're thriving~~

Kirito can honestly only gawk at him, because what. what the hell.]

You cut it. You're kidding me.

[This guy seems like one of those earnest types. He's. Probably not kidding.

You disabled the emergency alarm system. You are so lucky your life support didn't shut down and kill everybody.

No. He's not going to blame a mystery woman for giving him random advice. He's the one who followed it. He's the one who blindly trusted a stranger, again, just because he didn't have anyone else around to tell him that maybe it's not a good idea.

Sorey clenches his fist tight enough that his glove squeaks and he bites his lip until it stings before he tries again.] Kirito- could you please teach me? Not everything right now, but if I could get lessons from you...I'll figure out a way to pay you for them. I just- I need to know what I'm doing, for sure, instead of trying to guess all the time.

[Kirito considers getting further into it - because this error was a huge deal - but he's... really not the paragon of virtue when it comes to getting people killed, and that's a sobering thought that forces him to back down. He knows what guilt looks like.

Deep breaths.]

You don't need to pay me, I don't mind teaching you. It's more important that we keep each other alive around here. Not like anyone else is going to help us.

[They sure as hell can't depend on the Atroma. They didn't even bother to give everyone a proper manual or anything. The augments can only help so much.]

Two rules: first, don't mess with any parts unless you know exactly what it does. If you're going to learn anything, the first step is to know what each and every part of the engine is. Use labels if you can't memorize it.

[He lifts his comm.]

Second, ask for help if you don't know the right way to fix something. Guesswork is fine when you're messing with the little stuff, but life support? Shields? Propulsion? Breaking any of that can get people hurt. A ship has a life of its own- you need to take proper care of it, or it won't take care of you.

[Sorey nods, and though his heart burns with shame and his mind wants to take him down all the roads of you could have and reckless mistake he denies himself that luxury. At least, for now. He shouldn't waste Kirito's time with his guilt, not when he's doing him such a huge favor.]

Understood. I won't touch anything I don't know without calling you first for help.

...Okay.

[Well, as long as that's sorted, he can relax a little bit. He pauses to listen closely to the system, then fishes a few wire connectors and pieces the emergency system back together.]

It doesn't sound like anything else is in critical condition, and I work better with my own tools, so I'll come back in a couple of days with my box and we can do a full system exam. Top to bottom, every detail. After that we can work out a schedule and start from scratch.
