Huntress crew, this is your first mate, Sorey. ...due to certain circumstances, we are currently without a Captain. I'm acting as Captain now to fill the role, but if there are any interested parties, please contact me at your soonest convenience.

In the meantime, if there's anything that requires tending to, please don't hesitate to let me know. Any supplies we're short on, any concerns you may have about the status of the ship...I know we're at full capacity now, so if we start taking on extra passengers again we'll have to double up. And I'm also the ship's engineer, so please bring any technical problems you have to me.

[Sorey can be found both in engineering on the Huntress and at the Interfaith center on the Iskaulit. If your character can sense spiritual power and has run into him before, they may notice him lacking his usual protective/cleansing domain.]

Ah, iiiit's... [Sorey jumps up and leans over, reaching past her to slide back the cover on the dispenser.] Here's the flavors, they've got little pictures. I like orange and strawberry both, I'm not picky. It's this weird gelatin stuff though, I don't know if that'll work?

[willynilly]

Gelatin can work! Some mochi have kind of a jelly filling, though that's usually the cheap kind... but we're in space, so we gotta make do with what we have!

[She's used to the cheap stuff anyway, even mochi is a luxury when you're dirt broke.]

I like orange and strawberry. Let's make both!

[monolike]

Sounds good to me. [Sorey smiles a little at her enthusiasm and rubs his chin.] So what can we mash the rice in? You said it takes a lot of strength, right?

[willynilly]

Well, maybe just endurance. I don't know how hard it is with this stuff, I haven't tried before. But it's gotta be real thorough!

[She finds a flat-bottomed bowl and fills it with the synthetic rice from the machine, peering doubtfully at the contents for a moment before passing it to Sorey. Next, she tracks down a utensil with a big enough handle base to work for the task at hand and demonstrates how to make the paste from the rice.]

This is how you do it. You make this weird-looking white mush, and it doesn't look like much right now, but once they're done you'll be amazed, promise!

[monolike]

Oh wow. [Yeah that looks gross and tedious, he can see why a lot of places will make them now. It's always easier to sell something that's a pain in the butt to produce.] Okay, well! [He pointedly rolls up his sleeves!!! and gets started on mashing that rice into muck. Mmmm.]

So what animals should we make these? Which ones normally get done?

[You wait, Sorey. Yooooouuuuu wait.]

Hmm... bunnies and kittens are popular, and pretty easy to do, I think! We can start there.

[Since Sorey's taking care of the rice, she goes about getting together the filling, tossing a handful of ingredients and flavouring into a pair of bowls.]

Unless there's one you'd rather do? I'm no pro or anything, but we can give it a shot.

Goats. Can we do goats? [mash mash mash. this is kind of soothing actually....]

[willynilly]

I've never done goats before! Let's try it.

[She'll have to ponder how to do the horns. In the meantime, this mixture needs more sugar. Ingredients are limited in space, but desperate times call for desperate comfort food.]

Do you like goats? We don't get them much in the city.

[monolike]

There were these herds... [Sorey fixes his sleeve when it starts to flop back down before getting back to work.] Generations of goats who would hang out just outside my village. If I was kind to them, they'd let me milk them so I could have cheese and butter. Sometimes they'd even look after me, when I was smaller, make sure I didn't roll off the mountain side or anything. They were kind of like, [pauses, then smiles to himself and decides why the heck not,] like my neh-eh-eh-nies.

[willynilly]

[There is a pause as that sinks in, then Ochako snorts, blowing a whuff of sugar across the table. The snort very quickly devolves into a round of giggles.]

N-n-neh-- that was pretty good...!!

[monolike]

[Sorey cracks a smile, still grinding the rice grains down.] Thanks. I have a good pun teacher.

[willynilly]

Sounds like she knows her stuff.

[A few beats. She's no pun expert, but jokes are fun, and a good way to cheer people up for sure!]

....You must run into some baa-aa'd puns sometimes, though!

[monolike]

Definitely. You wouldn't believe some of the ones I've herd.

[willynilly]

[She giggles again.]

Um, um-- you have to be careful they don't goat out of hand.

[monolike]

...okay, I'm out. You beat me, solidly. [Even on his good days where his brain's working to full capacity, he's usually only got one or two jokes at the ready. Definitely not now.

He lifts up the makeshift pestle to show Uraraka the paste.] How's that look? I guess there's no wrong way to grind something into paste, though.

[willynilly]

Yaaay, victory~!

[Ochako beams and bullies her way into his personal space, poking her finger into the rice. She looks satisfied as she examines the goop on her finger.]

Uh-huh, that'll work! Now we just-

[She slides two other bowls over, where she'd mixed some of the flavour powder with water- one orange, one strawberry. She gestures to each in turn.]

Split the rice into each of these bowls, and we'll mix them together. After that, we can add the filling, and then we'll leave them to bake! That's all there is to making lazy mochi. If you wanna get complicated, we can decorate them, too.

[monolike]

[Uraraka shoving into his space is actually kind of nice. It reminds him a little of Rose, minus the teasing.] Mix them into- [He points. Baking is not even close to his strong suit.] But I thought that was for the filling. It goes in with the rice also?

[willynilly]

Nope! Filling's over there.

[She gestures to the two bowls she'd stacked off to the side- if Sorey looks inside, he'll find a thicker mixture, a paste rather than the liquid. And then, since she's a go-getter, she splits the rice up herself, shoving one bowl in Sorey's direction and starting to mix the other.]

Mochi looks better when it has some colour to it, especially when you're working with this fake goop. And it helps with knowing which flavour they are, too!

[monolike]

Ohhhh, [that makes a lot of sense. Instead of just trying to keep them separated by memorizing which are which.] Neat, I didn't even think of that. [Sorey watches her mix up her batch before he does his. Baking is so complicated...] You seem pretty familiar with this, do you bake a lot?

[willynilly]

Just simple stuff, mostly... whatever's cheap and easy. My house is pretty far from where I go to school now, so I had to get my own place or I'd never make the commute on time every day. If I didn't cook for myself, I'd never eat!

[Sometimes she still doesn't! It's so frugal!!]

[monolike]

[ochako n o] So you live all by yourself back home? What about your parents?

[willynilly]

[ochako yes!!!]

Um... my parents still live at the house I grew up in. It's more than three hours away from my school, though, so I can't just go home every day. I live in a 'lil apartment made for students closer to the campus.

[Her voice is quieter now, distractedly stirring away at her own bowl. It's hard to stay energetic when you're reminded of how homesick you are.]

[monolike]

...it's okay to be sad, if you are. [Sorey glances up from his own mixing to offer her a small smile.] Don't think you have to keep anything up for my sake.

[willynilly]

[Oh dear. Ohhhhhh dear. She feels caught in the act, and here she'd been trying hard to cheer him up. This isn't what she came here for at all.]

No, no... it's okay. I just- I used to make mochi with my dad a lot.

[She fidgets in her seat, spoon poking listlessly at the rice mixture.]

I guess I'm a little sad, but I'm happy, too. I always feel like that when I think of home. Isn't that normal?

[monolike]

Completely normal. [Sorey scrapes the sides of the bowl to get it all mixed up and mashes it a little bit, just to watch it squish.] Did you live in the same place your whole life until you moved for school?
