[ Maybe October doesn't really happen in space, but since time is arbitrarily defined anyway, maybe it does. Throughout the month, members aboard the Tourist might notice subtle(ish) decorations going up. A paper garland of candied apples here, some adorable paper Jack-O-Lanterns there... The ship was destined to be a Pinterest board the moment Kara was brought on it. Sorry not sorry. ]

So... how are things going?

[ he holds out a bear to her. ]

Clearly pretty good viewership-wise. [ which is terrible for him. but why be a downer. ] How are things going with you?

Delivering the goods, huh?

Things are okay with me. I decided to depower a bit. Natasha offered to keep my fighting skills up, but I hold back too much with her, without the kryptonite practice room the DEO has.

Never a dull moment. Maybe I should spend some more time watching paint dry.

[ of course with his luck the paint would turn into a monster and try to swallow him whole or something. ]

And you're -- feeling okay? [ that's an important bit of information to know, especially with his tendency to get in trouble. ] How long are you thinking of going superless for?

[ she shrugs ]

I mean, I don't love it. I don't even know why I'm invested in her sparring with me, but she was pretty realistic about how much I was holding back. And you know I can control myself but I also just don't like to fight regular people. It'd be better if I didn't have to depower this way... that's the "nice" thing about the room in the DEO. But I'm not really ready to set something like that up here...

Anyway, it's fine. And the sun machine works really quickly so I can always go back.

Yeah, I don't think setting something like that up here would be safe.

[ he's not doing it. no way. bad enough he had to set up one thing to depower her. he's not making a whole room that's impossible to hide. no way. ]

There's gotta be better candidates to spar with you on your level.

I mean, sure. But she has unique things to teach me.

I guess. [ his own interaction with natasha mostly made him feel like a kid making an idiot out of himself in front of a patient authority figure. ] Let me know when you power back up?

I don't know. I mean, training's a good idea, and training in case the Atroma depowers you is smart.

I'm in a better position than I was before you helped me out with building the sun synthesizer.

Yeah but we don't really have a guarantee on anything, here. It's good to be prepared.

[ it's just that he's been relying on her powers for his sense of security. no matter how scary things get, he could tell himself - I'll call kara and she'll be here in a heartbeat. now, it feels like his safety net's been yanked off. ]

But something can happen without warning, and you may not have time to power back up.

Because I've been so useful so far?

[ it's a little sharper than she intends ]

Nah, you're right, not letting Sascha eat me helped no one with anything.

[ there's a little defensive snark pushed right back. ]

Sure, I mean, that definitely helped you. I'm pretty sure I could've done most of that at half-power, but fine. But everyone's still stuck here or whisked to the ether with no guarantee we'll see them again.

That's true for all of us. X-Men, Avengers, tech support who're supposed to be able to figure out where to point said heroes to resolve these situations - but we're working on it, and we'll get it, and when we do, I am counting on you to make sure the Atroma can't do this to anyone ever again. But in the meantime, sure I'm biased since it was my life, but I think saving one makes you useful.

[ it was a pretty big slip up but she's really missing Alex. Natasha is not Alex but the similarities are there and Kara wants to impress her—make her realize she's not a silly girl ]

Anyway that's all the more reason to actually work on my combat foundation.

[ they both tend to slip up into their own emotional corners, and he doesn't want that. he wants to get to be there for her. ]

I'm so happy that I could be there for you, and for Sascha, right then. I didn't mean to devalue that, because I don't. But doing one thing every few months? It's not really the pace I'm used to. I'm not inviting danger, but I just want more and right now, more feels like learning how to hold my own, maybe even without super powers.

I get that.

[ he nods. he's always looking for something of use to do with himself, they've discussed it repeatedly. he understands where she's coming from completely. and still a little part of him wants to argue against the idea of leaving them more exposed. she's how he survives, which is not a feeling he can explain. ]

So I don't really get why it bothers you what I'm choosing to do. I know you care about my best interest, but this doesn't feel like that.

[ that stings. it more than stings. he lets it hang between them quietly for a moment. ]

[ lips tightening. he knows she's not his keeper, but she's his best friend. he's had two near-death experiences in a really short timespan, and that's after the winter incident; he doesn't feel safe. he still wakes up from nightmares most nights, the light stays on in his room through the night, and his relationship with sascha is far from repaired. he's tried to keep kara as separated from that side of himself as possible so he knows it's not really fair of him to be upset that she doesn't realize how much he's still suffering, but logic ends where emotion starts.

he puts the bear back in the crate. even something as simple as that - he counted on kara to help him with. he depends on her too much, doesn't he. he picks up the crate. ]

I'll set them up in your office.

Winn, wait. Stop. I thought we were talking.

[ she doesn't get his preoccupation with what she's choosing to do, and she doesn't really like feeling like other people have a say in the choices she makes about her own body ]

Clearly I'm failing at phrasing things today. The truth is, I don't really know why I'm doing this, either. I want Natasha to be impressed with me. I miss Alex and they're not the same but there's something about her that reminds me of my sister. I feel like I have to prove I'm not just some silly girl who doesn't deserve her powers—that I'm useful even when I don't have them. I went from saving lives like, every day, as well as managing the daily life of one of the world's most amazing women, and here I'm singlehandedly recreating Pinterest for lack of better hobbies.

You're my best friend, Winn, so I know you have good intentions. I trust you, more than anyone else here, but I don't really think it's out of line to ask why you're so invested in the choices I make with my body.

I need you in order to survive, Kara. I know you're not my bodyguard, and you don't owe me anything, but that's why I'm a little anxious about this and I just wanna know when it's over.

[ so he knows he can breathe a little easier again. he's not saying don't do it, he does see the merits of that idea, especially if natasha reminds her of alex. but he wants to live, he can't help it. survival instincts are strong. ]

[ that kind of takes her by surprise. It shouldn't, because she enjoys being his protector and making sure he's all right, but he has Kitty and Hank and all these other superpowered friends that he can call if it really got down to it ]

[ she stops; telling him he's wrong isn't the tack she wants to take. she needs time to think about it ]

I have faith in your ability to survive without me, Winn. I don't think either of us want that to be an issue, and I get why you feel that way. But I'll always be there for you, powers or not. And I'll let you know as soon as I decide to power up again.
