Because it's important to keep a record of everything? If we ever get back, I want to have physical documentation of this trip, no one's going to believe something as absurd as a televised space cruise.

The Mother Confessor lays the law of the land. She does not prosecute but her powers are legitimate.

I'm not doubting that, but who fights against false charges or helps find the truth when she isn't around? One person can't help everyone.

I've seen a lot of absurd things in my short career. . .

Anyway, attorneys, lawyers, they're just different words for the same thing, assuming defenders, well, defend the innocent! Prosecutors would be the opposite.

People can speak for the defense, but we rarely have someone on the other side. The defenders can do their best to convince the village elders.

Oh, so a jurist system. That makes sense, all those people are practically prosecutors anyway, just without the proper training. . .which can also skew things, but it's not like my method is 100% accurate either.

And what is . . . your method?

Oh, well, usually someone in trouble will request me or a coworker as their defense! We go and investigate the case after the detectives and police have done their job, and then we bring our findings to court.

There, the defense and prosecution engage in a lot of back and forth, with us usually trying to prove our clients innocent! But what's important at the end of the day is finding the entire truth of the matter, so it's not vital that we win all the time.

Oh, it is. But given how convoluted some cases can be, it's necessary. I kind of love that about it, though I'd love for a normal, straight forward trial every now and then.

Y-you'd think. . .all my cases have been really weird. Locked rooms with only one suspect, noodle carts, concerts, demons. . .sign me up for something simple like "he shot the sheriff" and I will gladly take it on.

Well, I highly doubt you will have a lot of "cases" here.

I'm both relieved and alarmed at that prospect. Like, hooray, I'm not traveling with a bunch of murderers, but what is a lawyer supposed to do in space?
