Ohhh, is that so... [Sorey knows that seraphic artes can cause adverse side effects, though he doesn't know the exact science behind it. Even while armatized, all he knows is how to cast it and approximately what it'll do.] You mentioned a new kind of magic, too?

Actually, do I need a staff for it? I assumed, but it's not like I need the staff for magic normally.

I don't know, but we are in a forest. Would just a walking stick be enough to try it out?

It should, yeah. It just won't be any good. The wood around here is insanely high quality for magic, but still, a stick off the ground isn't going to be good until it's been carved and treated...

[She starts looking for a large enough branch on the ground.]

Yeah, probably not for an extended period of time. [A test is all well and good, but she'll need to get something actually strong to stand up to-

Sorey shoves aside the uneasy feeling in his gut and concentrates on finding a suitably strong branch.] Mikleo got the staff he uses here from a woman named Pearl...she made my sword, too. [y'know, the intentionally dulled one] Really great craftsmanship, but I don't think she's still here.

[There's an immediate look of disgust on her face at the mention of that name.]

No, auburn hair and a gem, right in her forehead. [Sorey mimes a circle with his fingers and holds it up to his face.] Who are you thinking of? One of Opal's friends?

Absolutely not.

Pain in the ass from a different team. She's not related to Opal's team at all. She was an annoying pain in the ass.

Well, if it makes you feel better, I don't think it was her. The Pearl I met was really nice. If she's gone, though, umm... [Sorey thinks.] I can do some woodwork if you need help with that, but I can't make anything out of metal or anything like that.

... That would help. I need to have it carved out and treated, and if some of the crystals around here can be fixed into it, even better.

Just regular wood treatments? Doesn't need anything magical done to it, does it? [Sorey's reluctant to take anything living from this planet for multiple reasons, but crystals should be okay. And if they find an adequate branch from a dead or dying tree, that'd be even better.]

Not at all. I just hate getting splinters while I'm trying to cast.

[If it helps, Sorey, just look at her. There is no way she's strong enough to get any parts of a tree that are still attached.]

Oh yeah, we'll definitely sand it down.

Well if wood works, I think we can definitely do something for you here! What would work better, dry wood or a living branch? I can probably hack something down if you need it.

A living branch. Freshly cut, if possible. Any slight decomposition will make it a lot worse. But the most important part is the age of the wood- Old things conduct mana better, so we should find the biggest and oldest trees to get branches from.

[monolike]

Mmm... [Sorey looks out over the forest, pausing and resting a hand on a tree.] ...maybe we should be careful with that.

[She stops for a moment to consider.]

Oh! Don't worry. I haven't found any Trents or anything of the sort down here.

A...what's a Trent?

... Big tree monster? Tries to crush people with branches?

Oh! There are hellions like that back home! They have these nasty root attacks too, those are the worst.

[experiencepoints]

Ugh, it sounds like it. Do they do that thing with the storm of leaves that feels like getting knives thrown at you?

[monolike]

Oh no, there's no leaves on the ones from home. Mostly they're dead trees that have been possessed by spirit hellions so there's hardly anything living on them.

But! That's not what I was concerned about here. More that it's...it feels kind of...alive. I mean, do you feel it?

But that's why I think we should be careful about taking anything directly from the trees. ...or we should at least make some kind of appeasement offering if we do.
