[Sort of. He still doesn't see why she can't just send off a fireball at whatever rock or plant happens to be around, but if she needs to be that technical than he's not going to question how her abilities work.
He looks around, trying to find some kind of animal. There don't seem to really be the regular allotment of squirrels, chipmunks, and general forest critters bustling about but he does manage to spot a bird on a branch a few yards away and sends a quick burst of ice at it, freezing it solid to its branch.
From here it looks a decent size, but once he wanders a bit closer, he finds he'd vastly underestimated. It's near four feet long with sharp talons and the razor beak of a corvid. Maker's breath, he's glad it hadn't just swooped at them all on its own.]

[She walks forward, pleased, not even caring about the size of it. She doesn't seem to think it's unusual in the slightest, honestly.
She swings his staff at it, connecting with a satisfying 'thunk'. Except that thunk is drowned out, because the instant contact is made, that frozen bird is suddenly the center of a thirty-foot-tall column of exploding fire blasting out of the ground. (The stream of fire and the bursting explosions from it, of course, resemble almost identically the fire coiling around the staff.)
Of course, when it fades, that bird is very dead, but the fire doesn't appear to have touched anything else. The ground, the trees, nothing else is so much as even a slight bit warmer after that display.]

Maker's sacred arsecheeks...
[It's not the size of the flame cast that confounds him, nor that she had to touch the thing with the staff to make it set off - that seems damned inconvenient for a battlefield, honestly - but the fact that nothing else was touched has him completely floored. If he's not careful, he leaves collateral damage in his wake that could level a small town, but this? This was magic that could have lit a city block on fire and yet it only hit the one target.]

[she actually seems a bit nervous, now. did this guy want to keep it to eat it? should she have held back to fire 1 or 2? she didn't do anything wrong, did she. help her.]
no subject
You killed it without touching anything else.
[Wolfe lets out a low whistle, impressed.]
That is some serious control you have.
no subject
Oh, that? No, it's nothing special. It's how all magic in my world works. Wouldn't it be harder to hit something that you didn't target?

[Maybe. At least a little.]

[she has no idea what she's getting into.]

[She sighs.]
That sort of shit is why my world killed all our gods. Religions like that never end well.
no subject
[He trails off, her second statement catching up with him.]
You killed your gods?
no subject
[Pause.]
Wait, no. Not like, me personally. I'm nowhere near that strong. The last one, Tyrfing the Warbringer, was killed like five hundred years ago.
