What about you, Mister Lehnsherr? [ turnabout is fair play. ] Will you be venturing deeper into the foreboding forest?

[After a moment's thought, he shakes his head.] I don't have plans to. If anything important comes up, I'm certain to hear about it. At present, I have my hands full collecting flowers and plants for a friend.

[mucked]

[ now, that's curious. ] With roots intact?

[exothermia]

Yes. She wants to keep them in her room. She's rather fond of nature.

[mucked]

I understand there's a garden kept on the Iskaulit -- but I would be well and truly impressed if someone managed to rear plants in their quarters. [ ... ] Does she have a UV lamp?

[exothermia]

Not that I know of. But she's a magic user, so I imagine she has some way of maintaining them like that.

[mucked]

-- The wonders of magic. [ frankly: ] I can't say I much understand it, but I respect the utility.

[ and she's come thus far almost exclusively because of wanda. ]

[exothermia]

[He makes a small noise of agreement.] Magic doesn't exist in my world, as far as I know. But there are things I'm familiar with that are alien to others, so it's all similar in that respect. [Similarly fantastical, to those without knowledge of it.]

[mucked]

Nor did I think it existed in mine -- until I came here, paradoxically enough. [ ... ] But I have since met individuals from the future, I suppose, of my world. And they boast such remarkable abilities. Some through scientific origins, and others? [ peggy allows herself a shrug. ] Cannot be explained.

[exothermia]

Not through any frame of reference we have, most likely. [He had given up trying to work out a logical basis for some things a while ago.]

I know that some have assumed that mutant abilities in my own world were a result of magic, but it isn't the case.

[mucked]

Of course not. As otherworldly as it would seem, mutation is science. [ that much she can agree upon. ] Perhaps merely science some of us can't yet comprehend.

[ she is lumping herself within that 'us'. she doesn't possess so fragile an ego that she cannot admit to her ignorance. ]

[exothermia]

[He nods, glad not to have to explain the point. While mutants have become common knowledge at home, there are still plenty here who look askance at him when he mentions them. Of course, many here would also have encountered the Fleet's mutants before. It simplifies matters.][It would explain much about En Sabah Nur's history, as well. Not a topic he wants to dwell on.] You're familiar, then?

I've met a few since arriving in the Fleet. Rogue -- and Mister Remy. [ she gauges his reaction, if she can. ] It seems there may be a bit of overlap in their worlds and my own -- sort of.

[exothermia]

[He sighs a little at the mention of Rogue - their conversations had been tense, and now she was gone. His feelings were mixed about her, as it always had been around the mutants who knew him as a staunch opponent. Remy he had only spoken to the once, and it was much the same, though slightly less brittle.]

I'm from a different version of their world. They both knew another Erik, and my own time is at least a couple of decades before their own. [He shakes his head, still a bit bemused by it all despite it being familiar by now.] So I'm not that surprised to hear of someone else that might overlap with it all. It seems to be a common theme.

[mucked]

-- Aha, you're also a fossil? [ her playful tone is gentle, if ever so slightly vexed. not with him, but with the grander picture of being so far behind so many. ] I count myself at least seventy decades behind most -- including those from my version of the world.

[exothermia]

[The comment does inspire a quirk of the lips, and he's not so resigned as to find no amusement in it.]

Everyone commented on the fact that my hair wasn't grey yet. [It's starting to turn, but he's certainly nowhere near silver-fox.] When I originally arrived I was from 1973. Now it's 1983, but it's still behind most others.

Seven decades sounds like it has me bested, though.

[ -- my, that's something of a leap. ten whole years. and yet, all the same, she can't help but feel a little more akin to his time than to the more modern years. she's read up on the differences between the decades. ]

When I originally arrived, I was from 1946. And now it's 1947. So seven decades may have you bested, but a leap of ten years? [ her eyebrows raise. they both win. ]

[exothermia]

[He merely shakes his head.] I don't recommend it, as an experience.

[The Forties he remembers, but he imagines from a very different perspective than Peggy.] You're right that there don't seem to be many from that time here. There was a girl on my ship for a short while who came from the middle of the war, but she's the only other one.

[mucked]

[ there is a distracting and dismaying comfort found in speaking with someone who can say the war and refer to precisely the same one that always looms in her memories. taken aback by that, she clears her throat and averts her eyes -- just for a moment. ]

What a miserable time to come from. [ peggy might have made her best career choices in the war, but she never lost sight of the horror of it all. ]

[exothermia]

[The glance away doesn't go unnoticed, but Erik won't comment on it. The war was much further in the past for him, decades ago now... and yet it was his shadow at all times, there whenever he looked behind himself.]

It is. But it ended. [That war did, at least, though he'd felt no relief in it at the time. The war continues though, as it always does. Wars between nations and species both. He shakes his head and changes the subject.]

It's never pleasant to suddenly get a chunk of time back.

[mucked]

No -- it's not. [ terse, guarded agreement. not that her guard is personal, so to speak. ] With just a year it was like...like remembering someone else's memories, for just a split second. And then trying to intersperse them with those made here. Like stitch-work. Or basket-weaving.

[exothermia]

[It's an apt description, and one that fits his own experiences too well. He's a little gruff when he replies.] Nothing as neat as that, I find. [He's dropped plenty of stitches along the way.]

But it has to be made to work.

[mucked]

Then more like patchwork, perhaps. [ a bit of on-the-fly revision. it helps, really, to talk it through. ] A quilt made of memories made back home, and memories made here.

[exothermia]

That's as apt a description as any. [For something as formless as memory work.]

[mucked]

-- You have people here, don't you? From home?

[ she vaguely recalls a conversation with that professor chap -- and conversations around the heron's captain, too, that suggested erik and charles knew one another. ]

What do they think of your ten year leap?
