[ And she likes the way he's looking at her, right now. She wishes she'd had a chance to actually dress up, but she notices his expression, the way his breath keeps catching, and that makes her smile. ]

I'm... really glad that... you know. That this is something you want to do.

[The time gap, especially, makes it hard to judge what he should expect her to be feeling, how this always complex thing between them would be twisting right now. They haven't always been good to, or for, one another. Thrown in like this, over their heads, maybe it's natural they'd team up - but that doesn't mean he isn't grateful, anyway.]

Well, I mean... what else am I going to do? If there's a way I can help... I'm not gonna leave you and Cass to figure this out on your own.

We could work together on different ships, if you wanted. Have some elbow room between us. Not be stuck in the same confined space...

[ She tilts her head a little, brow furrowed. ]

...we don't, do we? I mean, I know things are... complicated, maybe especially now, but it doesn't have to be a... thing. If we don't want it to be. [ Because that's how their relationship has traditionally worked. Steph lives in hope.

She gives him a tiny, crooked smile. ] I'm gonna be stuck in a confined space with someone. I'm more comfortable if at least some of them are people I know... even if they do make me want to punch them sometimes.

[Impulsively, he pulls her close, into an almost-hug, but doesn't stop dancing, moving slow.]

It's hard to know how to pick up where we left off when we didn't leave in the same place.

[ There's a soft intake of breath when he pulls her close, but she doesn't make any move away. The closeness is more than welcome... she's just not used to Tim being the one to initiate it. ]

No kidding. Is there... still anything to pick up, where you are?

[ She has an ugly suspicion about her future, or lack thereof, but just coming out and asking seems a little much. ]

There's... yeah. But we're both busy, and I've said and done... some stupid things.

And... until recently, I was dating Tam Fox.

[Sort-of engaged, but since that had been a cover story, better just not to mention it at all, right? Anyway. Tam dumped him after he faked her father's death without warning her.]

She freezes for a second at that next bit of news, though. ]

Oh. Okay. Recently dating like 'until I ended up on this weird spaceship', or...?

No. Uh, no, she... we broke up a couple months before that. But by then, you were in England, working on something for Bruce. Need-to-know, and I hadn't hacked his new suite of crypto algorithms yet.

[ She smiles a little at that last part. ]

Alright. Well... How about we just take it slow and see how things work out?

[ Which means not kissing him now. Exercise a little self-control, Steph. You can do it. ]
