[McCoy has a blanket wrapped around his shoulders when the broadcast flips on; he's still cold, by God, and he's not above looking a bit silly in an effort to warm up. There's unoffensive music playing in the background and McCoy's eyebrow is fairly twitching in time to it.]

Two questions, for whoever's listening. [He's read everything he can get his hands on, but some things are better from people he can actually question. He holds up his index finger.] Where in the hell are we? I can't make heads or tells of what I'm seein' here.

[He holds up a second finger.] Where can I get a drink? Doesn't have to be good; it just has to burn.

[he knows it's not much. At least he looks apologetic] Not off-hand, no. It's nothing found in Earth's system, anyway - if you're - ah, familiar with Earth's system.

Hey, I may live and work in space, but I'm from Earth. So, yeah. Familiar enough and familiar with a few other systems.

You never know around here. I've met a few people who aren't familiar. You work in space, though? So this is at least familiar to you?

Yeah. I'm stationed on a starship. We're more than halfway through a five-year mission in deep space exploration.

Wow . . . that's the sort of thing you only see in television shows where I'm from.

Gotta dream it before you do it, I guess. Name's Leonard McCoy. Chief Medical Officer on the starship Enterprise.

That's one way to put it.

[the irony of his previous statement doesn't escape him one bit. He blinks, almost surprised, before he can't help the huff of amusement]

Hank McCoy. It's a pleasure.

[He's suddenly wondering if there's a 'Hank' in his ancestry -- then decides that he doesn't want to know. There's weird and then there's weird.]

Good strong name. I like it.

[that makes him laugh a bit]

I could say the same. Do you prefer doctor is or is your first name all right?

Doctor when I'm actually doctorin'. First name's fair game any other time.

Got it. [here's hoping he remembers and doesn't slip] Ah, but - does that mean you'll be a medical officer here as well?

I don't know what else I'd be. You certainly don't want me trying to fly one of these things. Last time I flew anything, I wrecked it. [A pause] Twice.

As strange as it sounds, if you think about it you'll figure it out.

[.....]

Is that - in general? Because there's shuttles we use to get from ship to ship, too.

I can fly a shuttle. [A pause, and then, wryly:] I ended up on a craft I'd never seen before in the middle of a firefight. I thought I did pretty good to not die.

I'd say not dying is just a tad better than "pretty good". Though if it was unfamiliar that makes a lot more sense.

I'm telling Jim you said that. But yeah, had never seen it before and suddenly trying to land it didn't work so well.

Does Jim say otherwise? [he will always side with Bones, sorry Kirk] That sounds . . . inconvenient.

Eh, he knows better. [McCoy's the one treating him when he's injured, after all.] Inconvenient is one word for it.

I imagine a lot of words fit. Hopefully you won't have to deal with any of that here.

If I had to, then I'd be questioning my luck more than I do now.
