Who: The fine crew of the SS Red Fish!
Broadcast: Probably not so much...
Action: You betcha.
When: Barely forward-dated to Halloween!
---
[welcome to the Red Fish, the ship that always looks ready for Halloween anyway.
while today is a popular Earth holiday, it's also Zhas' birthday, and he has probably mentioned it to everyone on board in an unsubtle way over the last few weeks. there are a hilarious number of jack-o-lanterns around the ship, showing off skull-face carvings of... varying quality. thanks, Syeira!
what's in store on this spooky night? HILARITY, probably.]

once a year, the world turns on its head. today is Zhas' birthday, and all the rules of Coil's reality run backwards until it's over.
this means that it is also a rare day in which Coil doesn't have the option of hiding in his room or disappearing into the shadows of the planet... because he has some babysitting to do.
tonight, Coil is out in the open, camped out in the corner of whatever room Zhas happens to be in. and while his partner may currently have a naked, human face, Coil seems to have taken up the slack--for once, Coil is the one with a skull painted on his face. and because of the paint, it's hard to tell what he thinks about this whole thing, but by the way he's mostly ignoring the cup of something inappropriately strong in his hand, he doesn't seem to be particularly thrilled.]

The past few days on the Red Fish have been a little more active than the first few days of Carl's arrival, so it's been a bit more difficult to go unnoticed. He'd come out of his room for food and something to drink, and was met with a kitchen full of people. Well, better late than never to get acquainted.. Although with so many unfamiliar people, there's still that notion of unease at the back of his head.
He sees Zhas without his skull makeup and Coil with, and it doesn't seem right, though he's only seen both of them in passing. Though he had met Zhas earlier. Captain one of three. Carl sidles over to Coil to at least introduce himself. ]
Hey, I'm Carl. I was just assigned here.
no subject
and this is why he doesn't even bother glancing out of the corner of his one good eye until the boy states that he's more than just a visitor.
Coil doesn't say anything, but Carl at least has his attention now. it's hard to tell with all that paint if his expression can really be called surprised, but his eyebrows do raise.]
no subject
It's hard to tell what this guy is thinking through the skull paint. ]
I guess I'm maintenance. So if there's anything I need to look at, I'll try to fix it?
[ Try being the keyword. He doesn't know how successful it'll be, even with the augment. ]
no subject
so, he nods--looking a little awkward as he realizes there is yet another crewmate that he likely can't communicate with easily. and after a minute, he tries anyway. raising his free hand, he spells out 'C-O-I-L.']
no subject
Okay.. I got most of those. What's this one? [ He imitates the 'I'. ]

[Asuka hasn't been overly chatty, but that's nothing out of the ordinary. She hasn't been on her ship that much lately. She's not boiling over with rage toward Coil anymore, not since he sort of apologized, but she also hasn't really discussed anything substantial with him lately. So she sidles up to him on impulse, untouched drink in one hand, the basket that goes with her Red Riding Hood costume (still on) (red's her favorite color) in the other.]
You're not having fun.
no subject
'are you?' he signs, looking a little skeptical.]
no subject
[Seriously? She'd have sort of assumed that he'd be a little more spirited about the whole deal, considering how close he is to Zhas. Asuka half-shrugs, idly running her finger around the rim of her cup.]
Are you dressed up like each other, or what?
no subject
and he just ends up shrugging to the first part. he wouldn't know how to answer even if she had answered first. part of this is maybe kind of fun, but the rest is just stressful. and weird. and all for reasons that he doesn't feel tipsy enough to explain.
but then there's that second question, and he stalls for time by forcing down a sip of his own drink.
it's awkward. he's awkward.
'...he's dressed as a person. I'm not. it's Halloween.']
no subject
Do you two always do that? [A ritual, or at least a tradition. Asuka fiddles with the ribbons holding the red hooded cape in place. She almost envies them, if that's the case. Something familiar in a weird world. Something like family.]
no subject
and to the second point, he nods. it is a tradition, something that formed when he was first grafted into Zhas' life, and the normally-skull-faced man is bound and determined to keep it going. and really, that's part of the reason that Coil is feeling more like sulking than celebrating right now. sure, babysitting while the older man loses his restraint for a night is taxing... but the real disappointment comes from having to share the tradition with a crowd of other people.
after that, he shrugs a little and admits, 'it's dumb, but it makes him happy.']

[She says it with a laugh in her voice. But he doesn't seem to be having it, so she sighs and slumps down a little, still smiling a little as she looks at him.]
You know I'm here to help if anything gets out of hand. You can relax. Just a little.
no subject
'that's what I'm worried about,' he signs, more to himself than anything. as if she can't actually read what he's saying.]
no subject
'What is that supposed to mean?' She signs back.]
no subject
he's apparently so determined not to talk about it that he's drinking willingly. and he's quick to try changing the subject.
'I thought he would go out this year instead of staying home,' he signs almost clearly.]

on the one hand, Zhas hasn't done anything particularly damaging yet. on the other hand, the night is young by their standards--and while Coil may not be drinking a lot, Zhas certainly is.
he doesn't have a drink in his hand at the moment, but that's just so he can chatter-sign at Coil the moment he catches him: 'is there something going on with you and Asuka?']

the sign he gives is one of those vague, abstract motions that basically amounts to 'what??']

finally, hunching his shoulders into a hanging shrug, 'we had a fight.']

his one eye rolls a little, and that's all the answer he gives.]
