[On one of her journeys to the kitchen, she'd find Kaylee- a twentysomething young woman dressed like a mechanic- experimenting with the various flavors of protein. Right now, she's frying some in a skillet, humming a happy tune to herself as she does so.]

Now, where's the pepper...

You can fry that stuff?

[Call Maggie skeptical. She would have been in and out and on her way, but she stopped first to dig out the pepper. It wouldn't kill her to be helpful sometimes.]

[Kaylee smiled and nodded her thanks as she accepted the pepper shaker.]

Yup! It takes a little creativity, but you can make some decent-tasting meals. Of course, it helps that I've had experience cookin' with protein before- and the stuff we had back home didn't have much in the way of flavor, neither.

Oh. Ah - would you mind teaching me a little?

[Not that she plans to be here long enough to get good at it.]

How long have you been here?

Be happy to! I only been here a month and a half, but things ain't so different for me than they were back home. You know, aside from the part where I'm on television.

And you're just... fine with it?

[Not to be a jerk or anything but she's still trying to get her head around how calm people are about this.]

I've been here maybe a week and I'm still not sure how I feel about all this.

Not really, but there don't seem to be a whole lot we can do about it, either. I ain't a fighter or a rebel... so long as I got a ship to work on, I can be happy.

I wish that could be enough for me, but I understand what you're saying. Building a life for yourself is just as important as fighting to have it. It's kinda the same thing, I guess.

And I'm something of an optimist, too. [She winked.] So I gotta trust that things will work out for us somehow. When the time comes, I hope to be useful in some way, but for now, I'm not gonna dwell too much on things I can't fix.

It's nice to hope, but I'm kinda the type that makes it work out instead of hoping it will. I get stir crazy if I don't.

[She's definitely a woman of action, down to her bones. It's why she's survived as long as she has.]

Ain't nothing wrong with that approach, either. Some folks need to have a thing to do, to work toward. This Fleet's got all kinda, so I hope you can find something to hold onto.

My husband. I can get by without him but... I'd feel better being back home with him, you know?

I hear ya. Me'n my boyfriend had just got together before I got sucked here, which I know ain't the same thing, but... I miss my crew, too. You travel with people a while and they get to be like your family.

We got good at that back home - making a family out of each other. It wasn't just me and Glenn it was others too. Carl, who's here in the fleet too. His dad brought us all together.

And if nothin' else, you had each other, right? And that helps you survive more than anything, even if you don't got much else.
