I’m figuring that at some point I’m going to get an explanation, or one of my guns back, or something. Because I’m not really likely to die of boredom, no matter how long I’m left here.

[And while boredom is a lot better than most of the alternatives, Kai would still rather have some kind of weapon.]

And I can still bite, if it comes to that.

[Kai shows his teeth and it looks like in addition to having pointy ears and purple eyes, he also has fangs.

He lets out a half-sigh after that.]

Seriously though. What is it I’m supposed to be doing here? I can’t see much use for a Stalker.

I can assure you they're entirely real. One is here at the moment, and I've met others in my travels through the multiverse. Elfin, though? Is there some reason your teeth are sharp?

It's a trait for your species, then? I'm afraid there are only humans where I'm from originally, and I've never met an elfin. Do you only eat meat or some such?

Yeah, like the pointy ears. And no.

I don't know why we are the way we are. Not my specialty.

Stalking is, though? Might I inquire as to what, precisely, you go stalking after? Is that like some sort of private investigator?

Sometimes there's investigating, like when I need to find a missing person. Sometimes it's just shooting where I'm told, or acting as a guard.

Lately it's mostly ainmhí dubh -- black dogs -- but there are always salamanders, dragon eggs, musang, that sort of thing.

You seem a man of many skills. I fear they're stills foreign to my world. You've just listed off a several... creatures I've never heard of save in fairy tales.

Do you enjoy your work, at least? I knew a man who was part of an order that made it a habit to chase down non-human creatures.

Yeah, things got messy for us too when the human world combined with the elfin one.

It's not too bad as far as jobs, I imagine. I mostly set my own schedule and pick which jobs I take. Never thought of being kidnapped to space as part of the potential side effects. And I don't have to worry about people refusing to hire me for being elfin.

Might I inquire as to what you mean by 'combined'? You mean you discovered one another? Or your realities crashed into one another, interweaving in most unexpected ways?

The second one. It's about as much fun as it sounds, unless you think it sounds like fun, and then it's less.

I've experienced the same for my own reality, sir. Only it was some forty or fifty others it was combined with. Granted, it was for a far briefer time than it sounds like you experienced, and I was almost wholly unaware that it wasn't the norm at the time.

This happened for us sixty years ago, and I wasn't paying particular attention at the time but I feel like it would be a hard thing to miss.

I fear my own memories and those of the people around me were altered when our own realities were meshed. It was a poor patchwork that fell apart after only a month. I beg your pardon, though. Do you mean to say you're more than 60-years-old? You look very strapping, indeed, for your age, if so!

What happened when it fell apart?

I'm over a hundred years old.

[ How much over would be an impossible question for Kai to answer, but he's pretty sure that it's more than one hundred and less than two. ]

We were cast back to the wasteland reality that was said to be the true end of all of our realities. We'd been there for many months before, a false reality was constructed around us, and then it failed.

How long do elfin typically live? Are you immortal?

I'm considered a young adult, but we're not immortal.
