I’m figuring that at some point I’m going to get an explanation, or one of my guns back, or something. Because I’m not really likely to die of boredom, no matter how long I’m left here.

[And while boredom is a lot better than most of the alternatives, Kai would still rather have some kind of weapon.]

And I can still bite, if it comes to that.

Seriously though. What is it I’m supposed to be doing here? I can’t see much use for a Stalker.

What's a stalker?

It means I work for SoCalGov, but licensed, rather than direct.

[Because no human government was going to hire an elfin, even if said elfin was raised by humans.]

It's my job to hunt the monsters they want taken out. I take private bounties when there's not enough government work.

What do you mean by 'monsters', then?

Depends on the specific need. Recently a lot of the bounties have been for ainmhí dubh, because more of them been loose in human areas. I escorted a pregnant woman through dragon territory. I once took a job to protect a cow for three days.

What did the cow need protecting from?

Anything that would keep it to making it to its sacrificial feast I guess.

Beef is delicious and I happen to be a predator, after all

Yeah, well. We managed to keep off any predators until it was the right time for the thing to be eaten. They gave me some of the beef in addition to my payment, so I'm not complaining.
