[ When the broadcast opens up, it is to a dimly lit room with very little decoration. Pietro has been in the fleet for a few months, but he's not collected much to show for it. His expression is pensive, and he takes a moment before he begins speaking. ]

I have been thinking about this for quite some time, watching others come and go.. [ He sighs, rubbing at his cheek. ]

What has this place done to you or your memories? Have you gained anything from being here that you could not have wherever home is meant to be?

[ After his broadcast, Pietro can be found sitting in the kitchen with a mug of hot tea if anyone would rather address him in person. ]

I've felt people die. Hundreds of people, each unique in their own way. I can hear their last thoughts, feel the jerk of their minds as it shuts off.

We all have parts in other people that we lose. People who are gone too soon.

[ His first sentence . . . that's confusing. As far as he's seen from their memories, Pietro was the one who died. ]

I'm sure your sister feels the same way. But she's here. Still living.

She is. Since it happened, I've been wondering what I can do to keep her safe-- make sure nothing so terrible happens again.

Vision isn't around and longer to make absolutely certain of it.

[ This is honestly the first time he's talked to anyone about what happened on the last planet.. He hadn't known how to address it, and then he refused to talk about it. Then he fell asleep.. Now back to square one. ]

No one can make sure of that.

[ He lapses into silence. ]

I find keeping each other alive is more important than just . . . focusing on the other. You've always helped each other. Why change that?

...It's not often I've felt powerless in something. If I had been faster, perhaps I could have stopped it.

I lost focus and she paid for my mistake.

I doubt you lost focus when it came to her.

[ He purses his lips, considering his next words. ]

No. We're powerful. And we rely on that power. But being faster, strong, or better doesn't stop terrible things from happening. Putting that blame on yourself won't stop it.

Wanda is the only family I have left. I let our parents down by allowing her to join them-- even for a moment.

[ They shouldn't have been so cocky. Shouldn't have thought the two of them could take on a dragon, but they'd wanted to help.. ]

You didn't allow it. Not everything that happens is within your power to stop or fix. Power has limits. It always has.

I don't think your parents would castigate you for that. Because you didn't allow it. You fought it. I won't tell you to be proud of that or be strong in the face of that loss because it hurts and it will, for a long time.

But your parents didn't want that for you.

If I could not do that, then what is the point of having them?

[ If he couldn't save the only person he had in the world and he was only meant to watch, then the world truly loves cruelty. ]

They didn't want a lot of things that have happened. [ Silence lingers, Pietro arguing with himself on what he should say. If he should share what's really on his mind. What has been for some time. ]

Things feel different and I don't know why.

The point of having powers is helping those who don't. You didn't always have powers. You have a gift.

[ He watches him. ]

Things are different. Is that a bad thing?

The reason we got them is so we could do something for our country. Fight for our people because we were not strong enough.

[ Pietro makes a pained expression, trying to smile through it. ]

My sister and I got our powers together. We have always been close, but our abilities brought us together. Mentally, spiritually. I do not know how my own presence feels to my sister.. but to me, there is a special spot in my mind where she is always present. We are never truly apart from one another.

[ He pauses long enough to take a steadying breath. ] I have never experienced the quiet like that before.

[ It was terrifying, painful, and so lonely. ]

[ Charles tamps down his jealousy. Even when people are welcoming, there's always that fear and paranoia that follows them. There are a few minds he's gone to, where he's fairly confident, but he's never felt safe in them. There's no certainty in telepathy. There's no certainty with the people he loves. ]

There's nothing quite like a mental connection.

I would say not. I don't think she can tell what I am thinking, but she knows my intent. She's been the only one that's ever been fast enough for my mind. To be able to keep up.

It doesn't feel like it used to.

[ Something is very wrong and he doesn't know where everything happened. ]

[ He hesitates visibly before speaking, a gentler tone. ]

Sometimes connections change. They grow. You can't expect it to be stagnant. And maybe someday, she might need to leave. Or you might need to.

It doesn't mean it's gone or lost forever. It just means there's more room in your heart.

She really doesn't need me as much as I need her. [ That's what he feared then and what he fears now. Pietro really isn't so complex as people think.

The thought of Wanda leaving, or god forbid if he left her again, is unbearable. He can't do this without her, and she shouldn't have to do this without him again. ]

This doesn't feel like growing.

It never does, at first.

[ That much he knows. ] It'll feel painful and lonely and bereft of a world you were comfortable with.

But it doesn't mean that world is lost.

[ Is losing that connection with his sister really growing? It certainly doesn't feel like it. Pietro remains uncertain, and yet he finds he can't talk to Wanda about it.

Not now. Not while she will be grieving. ]

I hope you are right.

I usually am.

I wish I could say that is a comfort to know. It does not feel like one.

It never feels like one, at the time. Comfort takes time. It takes learning and it takes an open mind. If you have those, it'll come to you.

I cannot say that I am a very patient man.

Then I suggest learning some. Especially on the Fleet.

We'll see.

[ He finds himself missing Peter vaguely. Though he doubts Peter would ever grow up to be this . . . serious. ]

You'll see for yourself. And I'm sure it'll work out.
